Existence: Encyclopedia - Existence

There is no universally accepted theory of what the word existence means. The dominant (though by no means universal) view in twentieth-century and contemporary Anglo-American philosophy is that existence is what is asserted by statements of first order logic of the form "for some x Fx". This agrees with the simple and commonsensical view that, in uttering "There is a bridge across the Thames at Hammersmith", or "A bridge crosses the Thames at Hammersmith", we are asserting the existence of a bridge across the Thames at Hammersmith. The word "existence", on this view, is simply a way of describing the logi ...

Existence: Mysticism Magick Dictionary on EXISTENCE

EXISTENCE

That which calls itself into being out of the Void. Most metaphysical systems are agreed that matter is "dirt", or at least less perfect than the Void. Just as the manifest world is infinite in its variety of potential forms of matter, so the void is infinite in its parade of anti-potential forms of non-being. From a strictly logistical point of view, the imbalance within the spotless Void arises as one potentiality differentiates itself from another in its degree of anti-substantiation and non-manifestation. Therefore, some of these "nothingnesses" have more "substance" than others, which thereby creates an unevenness from which a negentropic "singularity" has to develop. Thus existence breaks forth, or "falls", in a further effort to maintain the balance, and consequently to know itself. Thereafter, new knowledge necessarily continues to create itself and to expand consciousness to the limits, as it were, of The Infinite.

Existence: Separate existence

Hindu Quotes: Separate existence

Not deluded by pride, free from selfish attachment and selfish desire, beyond the duality of pleasure and pain, ever aware of the Self, the wise go forward to that eternal goal. Neither the sun nor the moon nor fire can add to that light. This is my supreme abode, and those who enter there do not return to separate existence.

Existence: Encyclopedia - Pre-existence

In Abrahamic religions, pre-existence is the belief that each individual human soul existed before conception, and at conception (or later, depending on when it is believed that the soul enters the body) God places one of these pre-existent souls in the body. In Christianity, pre-existence contrasts with traducianism and the more widely accepted version of creationism which both hold that the individual human soul doe ...

Muslim Quotes: Reflect on Your Existence

God has power to bring the dead back to life-and he will do so on the day of judgement, when every conscience will be searched. People will stand helpless; no one will be able to support them.

Existence: Encyclopedia II - Semiregular polyhedra - Existence

Every enumerated vertex configuration potentially uniquely defines a semiregular polyhedron. However not all configurations are possible. Topological requirements limit existence. Specifically p.q.r implies that a p-gon is surrounded by alternating a q-gons and r-gons, so either p is even or q=r. Similarly q is even or p=r. Therefore potentially possible triples are 3.3.3, 3.4.4, 3.6.6, 3.8.8, 3.10.10, 3.12.12, 4.4.n (for any n>2), 4.6.6, ...

Existence: Encyclopedia II - Zero-point energy - Existence

Does electromagnetic zero-point energy exist, and if so, are there any practical applications and does it have any connection with dark energy? The theoretical basis for electromagnetic zero-point energy is clear. According to Sciama (1991): "Even in its ground state, a quantum system possesses fluctuations and an associated zero-point energy, since otherwise the uncertainty principle would be violated. In particular the vacuum state of a quantum field has these properties. For example, the electric and magnetic fields in the electromagnetic ...

Existence: Encyclopedia - Existence of God

Many arguments about the existence of God have been proposed by philosophers, theologians, and other thinkers. This article lists some of the more common arguments, especially those covered in the area of philosophy of religion. In philosophical terminology, this article introduces schools of thought on the epistemology of the ontology of God. Existence of God - What is God? Definition of God's existence. Existence: Encyclopedia II - Existence - Earlier views

The first comprehensive treatment of the subject was by Aristotle in the Metaphysics. He developed a complicated theory of being, according to which only individual things, called substances fully have being, but other things such as relations, quantity, time and place (called the Categories) have a derivative kind of being, dependent on individual things (See the article on Ontology for a detailed discussion). The medieval philosopher Thomas Aquinas, perhaps following the Persion philosopher Avicenna, argued that God is pure being, and that ...

Existence: Encyclopedia - Arguments for the existence of God

Many arguments for the existence of God have been made over the years. Arguments for the existence of God - Arguments for the necessity of God. These arguments can be classified under two headings. First are the strictly logical or metaphysical arguments; these arguments seek to prove that the existence of a being with at least one attribute that only God could have is logically necessary. Arguments for the existence of God - Metaphysical arguments. The chief such argumen ...

Existence: Encyclopedia - Three marks of existence

After much meditation, the Buddha concluded that everything in the physical world (plus everything in the phenomenology of psychology) is marked by three characteristics, known as the three characteristics of existence, three signs of being or Dharma Seals. Together the three characteristics of existence are called ti-lakkhana, in Pali; or tri-laksana, in Sanskrit. Dukkha or unsatisfactoriness. Nothing found in the physical world or the psychological realm can bring lasting deep satisfaction. Anicca ...

Existence: Encyclopedia - Accounts of pre-mortal existence

The story of pre-history in the oral history of the Roman Catholic Church, goes something like this: Before the Earth was made, there was only God and angels. The most glorious angel became envious of God and asked to be made like him. God said no. The angel took his case to the other angels and, having won one third of them to his side, tried to change God's mind. When that didn't work a war ensued and the third were cut off from God as punishment. This story has many details that aren't relevant here, but note the classical description ...

Existence: Spiritual - Theosophy Dictionary on Existence

Existence (from Latin exsisto standing forth, emerging)

Although often used interchangeably with being, in theosophy being refers to abstract continuity in spirit, while existence means the phenomenal manifestation of an entity in the phenomenal worlds. Therefore being is the noumenon and existence is the phenomenon. Hence one can speak of the causes of existence (nidanas), or of all existences being dissolved. The Absolute, a cosmic hierarch, is defined with equal appropriateness as absolute existence and as non-existence.

Non-existence is described as absolute being, existence, and consciousness (SD 1:39). Fichte makes a proper distinction between being (Seyn) and existence (Daseyn), the former being the noumenal One, and the latter the phenomenal manifold through which the One is known.

Existence: Encyclopedia II - Pre-existence - Pre-existence in Judaism

While the idea of an immortal soul was not originally part of Jewish theology, it became so after Jewish contact with Persian and Greek thought. In rabbinical literature, the souls of all humanity are described as being created during the six days of creation (Book of Genesis). When each person is born, a preexisting soul is placed within the body. (See Tan., Pekude, 3). ...

Existence: Encyclopedia II - Existence of God - Positions on the Existence of God

Positions on the existence of God can be roughly divided into two camps: Theist and Atheist. Both of these camps can be further divided into two groups each, based on the belief of whether or not their position can be conclusively proven. Existence of God - Theism. Theism is simply the view that God exists. Some theists believe that the existence of God or gods can be proven through independent arguments, while others do not. The tradition of providing arguments for the existence of God on independent grounds is known as natural theology. Thus, to be a theist ...

Existence: Encyclopedia II - Pre-existence - Pre-existence in Christianity

Pre-existence - Early Christian writings on pre-existence. The earliest surviving Christian writings on the preexistence were from the Platonist Origen, who derived the doctrine from the writings of Plato. Origen believed that the soul was assigned a body as a penalty for its sin of looking downward toward the corrupt earth. The doctrine also derives in part from a repudiation of Greek thought by Tertullian, who argued that for each immaterial soul, a material body was created for it. See also:

Existence: Encyclopedia II - Existence of God - Arguments for the existence of God

A dispute arose as to whether there are a number of proofs of the existence of God or whether all are not merely parts of one and the same proof (cf. Dr. C. Braig, Gottesbeweis oder Gottesbeweise?, Stuttgart, 1889). While all such proofs would end in the same way, by asserting the existence of God, they do not all start at the same place. St. Thomas calls them aptly (Summ. theol., I, Q. ii, a.3) Viæ; roads ...
