| ARTICLES RELATED TO Evil Eye | | | | Evil Eye: Encyclopedia II - Eye of Providence - United StatesIn 1782 the Eye of Providence was adopted as part of the symbolism on the reverse side of the Great Seal of the United States. The Eye was introduced by the original design committee of 1776, and is thought to be the suggestion of the artistic consultant, Pierre Eugene du Simitiere.
On the seal, the Eye is surrounded by the words Annuit Coeptis, meaning "It [the Eye of Providence] is favorable to our undertakings". The Eye is positioned above an unfinished pyramid with thirteen steps, representing the original thirteen states and the future growth of the country. The combined implication is that the Eye, ...

| | | | Evil Eye: Encyclopedia II - Gaze - Effects of gazeGazing and seeing someone gaze upon another provides us with a lot of information about our relationship to the subjects, or the relationships between the subjects upon whom we gaze, or the situation in which the subjects are doing the gazing.
The mutuality of the gaze can reflect power structure, or the nature of a relationship between the subjects, as proposed by Catherine Lutz and Jane Collins, where this "tell[s] us who has the right and/or need to look at whom".
Gazing can often reflect emotion without speech - in Western culture, continued staring upon another c ...

| | | | Evil Eye: Encyclopedia II - Destiny - Different concepts of destiny and fateDestiny may be envisaged as foreordained by the Divine (for example, the Protestant concept of predestination) or by human will (for example, the American concept of the nation's Manifest Destiny). Something that's great in your future. Good things come from your destiny. Nobody knows what will happen in the future, but we do know that we have a fate or destiny.
In Ancient Greece, 'Fate' was invincible and even the gods had to accede to it, as the Oracle of Delphi insisted. In The Urantia Book man's eternal destiny is to find God through the choices he makes throughout life, but man's temporal fat ...

| | | | Evil Eye: Encyclopedia II - Destiny - Divination of destinyIn most cultures, ones destiny can only be learned about through a shaman, prophet, sibyl or seer. In Shang dynasty China, turtle bones were thrown ages before the I Ching was codified. Arrows were tossed to read destiny, from Thrace to pagan Mecca.
Destiny is commonly regarded as fate, a fixed timeline of events that is inevitable and unchangeable, and the future knowable through means of divination. This has led to a misconception of divination as fortune-telling, though the actual practice accounts for the self-determination of individual people and an unknowable future. In divination, destiny ta ...

| | | | | | | | Evil Eye: Encyclopedia II - Luck - Rational viewpointAs related to the occurrences of actual events considered to be of low probability in a mathematical or statistical sense. A rationalist approach would lead to the conclusion that such matters as whether or not someone bore a victim ill will would have no bearing upon (for example) that person being hit by a loose brick falling from a decrepit building. It was only due to a remote statistical probability that a person happened to be walking past when a brick fell. In a case like this, both rationalists and spiritualists would likely say that ...

| | | | Evil Eye: Encyclopedia II - Luck - Spiritual viewpointThere is also sometimes considered to be a spiritual, metphysical, or supernatural bias towards experiencing events of good or ill fortune. In this sense some believe that one's own or another's good or bad luck can be influenced through spiritual means or by performing certain rituals or by avoiding certain (from a rational viewpoint non-relevant) situations. Prayer is a religious practice in which this belief is particularly strong, although many cultures worldwide place a strong emphasis on a person's ability to influence their luckiness ...

| | | | Evil Eye: Encyclopedia II - Luck - Effects of viewpoint and beliefsThe belief in luck as a supernatural phenomenon is generally regarded by rationalists as a form of magical thinking. However, there is evidence that people who believe themselves to have good luck are more able to take advantage of fortunate chance events in their lives, and to compensate for unfortunate chance events in their lives, than people who believe that they have bad luck. This appears to be the result of positive thinking altering their responses to these events. A belief in luck can also indicate a belief in an external locus of control for events i ...

APOTROPAIC APOTROPAIC Lit. "turning away", descriptive of any protective device (such as garlic worn around the neck to fend off vampires). It applies to the "Eye of Horus", which is a wooden phallus used to ward off the "evil eye". All apotropaics, however, are defenses against some sort of "eye" and the purpose of such an object is to engage the attention of said eye and thereby detour its malevolence. Hence, the more startling or original the device, the better. (See also: APOTROPAIC, Magick, Mysticism, Mysticism Dictionary, Body Mind and Soul, )

Spiritual Dictionary on Tiger Eye Tiger Eye: Tiger eye is a beautiful, golden-brown shiny stone which appears lifelike due to its chatoyancy, or silky luster. It is a crystallized quartz, made of silica. It is found mostly in Africa. This stone has been worn through the ages to avert the evil eye and help prevent eye diseases. Tiger eye helps people gain insight into their own faults, and to think more clearly. This stone is helpful for greater spiritual understanding. It helps develop courage and inner strength, and gives one a sense of responsibility. Tiger eye helps to defeat negative forces. Because of its ever-changing appearance when viewed from different angles, it helps the person using it to become “all seeing”, able to view different ways of observing a situation. | | | | Evil Eye: Encyclopedia II - Gorgon - Protective and healing powersA gorgoneion (or stone head, engraving or drawing of a Gorgon face, often with snakes protruding wildly and tongue sticking out between the fangs) was frequently placed on doors, walls, coins, shields, breastplates, and tombstones in the hopes of warding off evil.
