A 2000 lawsuit from the World Wildlife Fund (also WWF) was settled in 2002, when on May 6, 2002, the company and the Federation changed its name to World Wrestling Entertainment, or WWE. Its parent company, World Wrestling Federation Entertainment, also chose to adopt this name. The lawsuit dealt with the wrestling company's breaching of an agreement with the Fund over use of the initials "WWF" in the United Kingdom. Rather than attempt ...

Eric Bischoff: Encyclopedia II - World Championship Wrestling - The Death of WCW

Bischoff was unexpectedly replaced by former WWF head writer Vince Russo and his colleague Ed Ferrera. Russo and Ferrera had been the head writers for the WWF at the beginning of the Attitude Era, subordinate only to Vince McMahon himself. WCW offered them lucrative contracts to jump ship in October 1999 in an effort to revitalize their own flagging product and weaken the product of the WWF. Russo and Ferrera tried to push the younger WCW talents straight away, and phase out aging stars such as Hogan and Flair. However, Russo was thought by many to be incapable of recreating the intrigui ...

Eric Bischoff: Encyclopedia II - World Championship Wrestling - The Bischoff Era Begins

No matter how technically amazing and athletic WCW's action could be, it did not make as much money as the WWF. The creative product of the company sank very noticeably in 1992 and 1993 under the presidency of Jim Herd and, subsequently, Bill Watts. There were signs of gradual recovery in late 1993 when former commentator and American Wrestling Association (AWA) booker Eric Bischoff was appointed as Executive Vice President of WCW. Bischoff, originally brought in as a secondary commentator behind Jim Ross after the AWA became defunct, was desperate to give WCW a new direction and impressed ...

Eric Bischoff: Encyclopedia II - Triple H - Controversy

Levesque is one of the most controversial figures in the history of the business. Many pundits have criticized him for using backstage politics to hog screen time, retain titles, elevate his friends, and generally hold down talented workers who might otherwise deserve to share the limelight with him. Those thought to be held down by Lesvesque, include Rob Van Dam, Chris Jericho, Kane, Booker T and Randy Orton. The Clique, including good real-life friends Shawn Michaels, Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, and Sean Waltman, was notorious for this in the late 1990s, and Levesque's influence continued after the departures ...

Eric Bischoff: Encyclopedia II - Stone Cold Steve Austin - World Championship Wrestling

In early 1991, "Stunning" Steve Austin moved on from the USWA to the Atlanta-based World Championship Wrestling. Initially, Austin was managed in WCW by a woman named "Vivacious Veronica," but was soon rejoined by his USWA manager Jeannie Clark, now using the name "Lady Blossom." From the start of his WCW run, Austin experienced success in the ring. On June 3, Austin won the WCW World Television Championship from Bobby Eaton, kicking off the first of two WCW TV title reigns. Months later, Austin joined a faction called the Dangerous Alliance ...

Eric Bischoff: Encyclopedia II - Stone Cold Steve Austin - Extreme Championship Wrestling

As Austin healed from his tricep injury, he was contacted by his former manager in WCW, Paul Heyman. Heyman was in charge of his own promotion at the time, the Philadelphia-based Extreme Championship Wrestling, and wanted to offer Austin a platform for which he could air out his frustrations toward WCW. This is where Austin would develop his future "Stone Cold" persona. Austin would use his wit and biting sense of humor to air out his grievances, imitating Eric Bischoff and other WCW luminaries. One of his most famous vignettes centered arou ...

Soon after walking out on WWF, the company would change its name from WWF to WWE in an unrelated legal fight with the World Wildlife Fund. The company's slogan for the brand name change, "Get the F Out!" was perceived by some as a jab at Austin leaving the company. The Rock used the line in a WWE vignette about the name change, further fueling such speculation. In February 2003, he returned to WWE, mainly in a non-wrestling role. Austin was finally defeated by the Rock at WrestleMania XIX. Afterwards Austin became "Sheriff" for RAW, m ...

Eric Bischoff: Encyclopedia II - Stone Cold Steve Austin - Early life and career

Williams played football at North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas) and, after holding down various odd jobs, began his wrestling career in the late 1980s in Texas. He took the ring name Steve Austin when he turned professional in 1990 because there was already a prominent, if not massively famous, wrestler with the ring name (and real name) Steve Williams. Austin states that he received the blessing of actor Lee Majors to use the name "Steve Austin", the name of the character Majors played in the 1970s sci fi TV series The Six Million Dollar Man ...

Eric Bischoff: Encyclopedia II - Subway restaurant - Criticism

The book Fast Food Nation is critical of Subway's franchising policies. It claims that in the 1990s, Subway was involved in many legal disputes with franchisees, usually over encroachment (overly aggressive expansion, in which one Subway is so close to another they end up competing), and high royalties. The book blames the "Development Agents", who are given the task of growing the company regionally. They are rewarded greatly for profits and punished for losses, so it is claimed that it is in their best interest to saturate markets w ...
