Epiphany (Greek: επιφάνεια, "the appearance; miraculous phenomenon") is a Christian feast intended to celebrate the 'shining forth' or revelation of God to mankind in human form, in the person of Jesus. Epiphany: Encyclopedia II - Biblical Magi - Epiphany

Christianity celebrates the three kings on the day of Epiphany, January 6, the last of the "twelve days of Christmas". In Spain and throughout the Spanish-speaking world, the three kings (Sp. "los Reyes Magos de Oriente", also "Los Tres Reyes Magos", receive wish letters from children and magically bring them gifts on the night before Epiphany. The Wise Men come from the Orient on their camels to visit the houses of all the children; like the Northern European Santa Claus with his reindeer, they visit everyone in one night. In ...

Epiphany: Encyclopedia - Zvaigznes Diena

In ancient Latvia, Zvaigznes ("day of star") was a festival held on January 6. Three pointed apple cakes were eaten. If a dog was heard barking, the direction was said to also be that person's future spouse. Weaving and wood-cutting was bad luck. A sunny enough day (warmed up the horse's backs) signified a year without war. After Christianization, Zvaigznes Diena became Trīs Kungu Diena ("three king's day"). The three kings refer to Caspar, Melchioru and Belceru. The initials "KMB" were carved on doors so that they would bless the house. Gypsies painted six-cornered stars on t ...
