Encyclopædia Dramatica: Encyclopedia II - Encyclopædia Dramatica - History

Encyclopædia Dramatica's history began when LiveJournal blogger and LJ Drama co-founder James Lee from Seattle, Washington, started using Wikipedia, an on-line, user-modifiable wiki, and created an article about LiveJournal blogger Grayden Rayne (former legal name Joshua Williams). The article was subsequently deleted, despite LiveJournal users, including members of LJ Drama, lobbying to keep the article. LiveJournal user and LJ Drama administrator Sherrod DeGrippo heard of the deletion of the LiveJournal-related article, and, as a r ...

Encyclopædia Dramatica: Encyclopedia II - Uncyclopedia - Content

Uncyclopedia entries are often fictional, based loosely on reality but aiming to parody. For example, the Algorithm entry from Uncyclopedia says that an algorithm is a term for "Al Gore getting his groove on." The Al Gore entry states that it is currently unavailable, and suggests that Al Gore might need to re-invent the Interwebs. Some articles are equipped with pictures which are either comic versions of the described item or a ...

Encyclopædia Dramatica: Encyclopedia II - Uncyclopedia - History

Uncyclopedia was launched in January of 2005 as a satire piece on Wikipedia, originally as a response to the demand in Wikipedia's "Bad Jokes and Other Deleted Nonsense" pages (themselves parodied in Uncyclopedia's True Facts and Other Deleted Prose page) for a place to put their nonsense. However, it was not advertised at all on Wikipedia itself, and grew into a place for small satirical essays on assorted topics. Uncyclopedia quickly outgrew its original webhost; on May 26, 2005, it was announced that Uncyclopedia would be hosted by Wikia, though not as a Wikicity. [2] Thus, its l ...

LiveJournal - User interaction. As with most weblogs, people can comment on each other's journal entries and create a message board-style thread of comments — each comment can be replied to individually, starting a new thread. All users, including non-paying users, can set various options for comments: they can instruct the software to only accept comments from those on their friends list or block anonymous comments (meaning only LiveJournal users can comment on their posts). They can also screen various types ...

Encyclopædia Dramatica: Encyclopedia II - LiveJournal - Social networking

The unit of social networking on LiveJournal is quaternary (with four possible states of connection between one user and another). Two users can have no relationship, they can list each other as friends (friend is also used as a verb to describe these) mutually, or either friend the other without reciprocation. The term "friend" on LiveJournal is mostly a technical term; however, because the term 'friend" is emotionally loaded for many people, there have been discussions in such LiveJournal communities as lj_dev and lj_biz, as well as suggestions about whether the term should be used in this way; th ...

Encyclopædia Dramatica: Encyclopedia II - LiveJournal - Controversies

LiveJournal - Invite system. From September 2, 2001 until December 12, 2003, the growth of LiveJournal was put under control by an "invite code" system. This was because the number of users was increasing faster than the server architecture could handle. New users needed to either obtain an invite code from an existing user or buy a paid account (which reverts to a free account at the expiration of the period of time paid for). The invite code system also had the side effect of helping to prevent abuse by deterri ...

Encyclopædia Dramatica: Encyclopedia II - LiveJournal - Sale to Six Apart

LiveJournal's parent company, Danga Interactive, was initially formed and held entirely by Fitzpatrick. However, as LiveJournal's popularity gained, Fitzpatrick was approached by many others to sell the popular journaling service. He initially resisted many of these offers, not wanting his pet project (which he has characterized as his "baby") in the hands of those who did not understand the site's core principles--reliance on paid memberships to fund site operations, the absence of advertising, the volunteer support model, and LiveJournal's ...

Encyclopædia Dramatica: Encyclopedia II - LiveJournal - Features

The most distinguishing feature of LiveJournal is the "friends list", which gives it a strong social aspect instead of being a simple blog or diary service. The friends list is used to provide various syndication and privacy services, described below. LiveJournal allows users to customize their accounts in several ways. The S2 programming language makes journal templates easy to manage, similar to blog templates used by WordPress and other popular systems. Users may upload a few graphical avatars, or "userpics", which appear next to t ...

Encyclopædia Dramatica: Encyclopedia II - Encyclopædia Dramatica - Categories

Encyclopædia Dramatica has a number of categories, which users can use as navigational aids. These categories cover topics such as LiveJournal, furries, sex, psychology, fan fiction and Internet trolls. The categories are rarely changed. While most of the encyclopedia is open content, the administrators forbid creation of new categories by non-admin editors, or for that matter, editing by those without a user account. ...

Encyclopædia Dramatica: Encyclopedia II - Encyclopædia Dramatica - Types of content

Many ED articles have ironic, sarcastic, profane, POV, and black-humor tendencies. For example, the entry on Terri Schiavo states that she died as a result of dehydration because Jesse Jackson preferred to take advantage of the media attention rather than providing a Slurpee from his limousine. Other common themes include: "Internet Law", with a crash course on libel, slander and copyright as applied to web forums; Articles about the world's countries that identify the number of 7-11 stores (and thus, Slurpee ava ...
