Emulate: Encyclopedia - Emulator

A software emulator allows computer programs to run on a platform (computer architecture and/or operating system) other than the one for which they were originally written. Unlike a simulation, which only attempts to reproduce a program's behavior, an emulation attempts to precisely model the state of the device being emulated. A popular use of emulators is to mimic the experience of running arcade games or console games on Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows. Emulating these on modern desktop computers is usually less cumbe ...

Emulate: Encyclopedia II - In-circuit emulator - Function

The basic idea of an "in-circuit emulator" is that it provides a window into the embedded system. The programmer uses the emulator to load programs into the embedded system, run them, step through them slowly, and see and change the data used by the system's software. An "emulator" gets its name because it often "emulates" the central processing unit of the embedded system's computer. Often, it literally has a plug that plugs into the same socket as the CPU chip. Emulating the main computer lets it do anything that the main compute ...

Emulate: Price of Leadership: Emulation and Envy

Leadership is a powerful construct. A leader is envied for the position and authority he enjoys. He receives adulation and is celebrated as a champion and deliverer. Little wonder, then, a leader is often emulated; even envied. High and powerful positions are fervently sought out for all the promise they hold. And what can be more alluring than the highest post in the land?

Even if Sonia Gandhi'sreasons for abjuring the high post are debatable, the very act of saying 'no"- to the most important and powerful job in the country - is something few would have the courage (of conviction) to carry out, and that too with the composure and determination that Sonia displayed.

Emulate: Encyclopedia - Console emulator

A console emulator is a program for a computer, or other computing device, that can emulate a video game console or handheld, so a computer can be used to play games that were created for that console or to develop games for that console. Such tools are often used to translate games into other languages, to modify (or hack) existing games, or to produce homebrewed demos. Console emulation can also be achieved between consoles (hence cross-console emulation), making a modern video game console emulate a less advanced one.

Emulate: Encyclopedia - Binary translation

In computing, binary translation is the emulation of one instruction set by another through translation of code. Sequences of instructions are translated from the source to the target instruction set. There is static binary translation, where an entire executable file is translated into an executable of the target architecture. This is very difficult to do correctly, since not all the code can be discovered by the translator. For example, some parts of the executable may be reachable only through ...

Emulate: Encyclopedia - Namespace computer science

Many modern computer languages provide support for namespaces. A namespace is a context for identifiers. An identifier defined in a namespace is associated with that namespace. An identifier can be defined in multiple namespaces. The meaning of an identifier in one namespace is completely separate from the meaning it has in any other namespace. Thus, a namespace introduces a new domain in which one can define any identifier with the guarantee that it will not clash with existing id ...

In general terms, a virtual machine in computer science is software that creates an environment between the computer platform and the end user in which the end user can operate software. Specifically, the term virtual machine has several distinct meanings: Virtual machine - Definitions. Virtual machine - Original meaning. Emulate: Encyclopedia II - Console emulator - Arguments for/against emulation

Console games for emulators are generally distributed as ROM images (or simply "ROMs") on the Internet. Without the permission of the copyright holder or the Entertainment Software Association, this practice is illegal—although few copyright holders appear to care about older games (see abandonware); many copyright holders are defunct; and a few copyright holders have even released their games and demos gratis or even as free software. This illegality is also controversial for long-time gamers and so called old-school gamers. One reason fo ...

Emulate: Encyclopedia II - EMule - Credit system

EMule - Introduction. The credit system is used to reward users contributing to the network, i.e. uploading to other clients. The strict queue system in eMule is based on the waiting time a user has spent in the queue. The credit system provides a major modifier to this waiting time by taking the upload and download between the two clients into consideration. The more a user uploads to a client the fas ...

Emulate: Encyclopedia II - Emulator - Structure

Most emulators just emulate a hardware architecture — if a specific operating system is required for the desired software, it must be provided as well (and may itself be emulated). Both the OS and the software will then be interpreted by the emulator, rather than being run by native hardware. Apart from this interpreter for the emulated machine's language, some other hardware (such as input or output devices) must be provided in virtual form as well: if writing to a specific memory location should influence the screen, for example, ...

Emulate: Encyclopedia II - EMule - Recent events

Recent versions (v0.40+) of eMule have added support for the Kad Network. This network has an implementation of the Kademlia protocol, which does not rely on central servers as the eDonkey network does. Also added in recent versions were "Unicode Search" (allowing for searches for files in non-Latin alphabets) and the ability (not supported in Kad Network) to search servers for files with complete sources of unfinished files. In new versions, a "Bad source list" was added. The application adds an IP address to this list after o ...

Emulate: Encyclopedia II - Hardware emulation - Introduction

The largest fraction of integrated circuit respins are due, at least in part, to functional errors. Thus, comprehensive functional verification is key to reducing development costs and delivering a product on time. Functional verification of a design is most often performed using logic simulation and/or prototyping. There are advantages and disadvantages to each and often both are used. Logic simulation is easy, accurate, flexible, and low cost. However, simulation is often not fast enough for large designs and almost always too slow to run ...

Emulate: Encyclopedia II - Console emulator - History

Emulation was occasionally employed by console manufacturers in the early 1980s to allow games from other (and sometimes competing) hardware to be run on the manufacturer's device. The Atari 2600 was by far the most frequent recipient of this behavior. Atari's platform was easily the most popular and widespread early game consoles, and many developers touted compatibility with the system's vast library of games as a marketing ploy to attract customers. Coleco's Colecovision and Atari's own Atari 5200 provided add-on peripherals that allowed ...

The eMule project was started on May 13, 2002 by Hendrik Breitkreuz (a.k.a. Merkur) who was dissatisfied by the original eDonkey2000 client. Over time 7 more developers joined the effort. The source was first released at version 0.02 and it was published on SourceForge on July 6, 2002. It was first released as a binary on August 4, 2002 at version 0.05a. The "Credit System" was implemented for the first time on September 14, 2002 in version 0.19a. The eMule project website started up on December 8, 2003. Since its inception, eMule has been down ...

Emulate: Encyclopedia II - In-circuit emulator - Advantages

Virtually all embedded systems have a hardware element and a software element, which are separate but tightly interdependent. The ICE allows the software element to be run and tested on the actual hardware on which it is to run, but still allows programmer conveniences to help isolate faulty code, such as "source-level debugging" (which shows the program the way the programmer wrote it) and single-stepping (which lets the progra ...
