Elves: Encyclopedia II - Peregrin Took - Character

The given summary is based on The Lord of the Rings as written by Tolkien. Pippin is six years younger than Merry, and thus is far younger than Frodo, who is fifty. He is a worthy accomplice to Merry's plans, but shows his age as well; he is still a cheerful, if occasionally thoughtless Hobbit, and is first to miss the comforts of Hobbit life. At Rivendell, Pippin is nearly denied the chance to accompany Frodo by Elrond who seriously considers using the youngest Hobbit as a messenger to the Shire. Gandalf, however, supports his and Merry's claims of friendship and loyalty, and Pippin ...

Other witches featured in the books include: Witches Discworld - Ammeline 'Goodie' Hamstring. Ammeline Hamstring, also known as 'Goodie' Hamstring was a witch from Lancre, the Ramtops. She appeared only in Mort, and was Mort's first "collection" as Death's apprentice. She had a grey cat. As with all Discworld magical practioners, she knew in advance when her death would be and again would be personally visited by Death (or had a right to be anyway) so she had time to prepare. When Mort arrived she was an elderly l ...

Elves: Encyclopedia II - Men Middle-earth - Groups and alignments

Although all Men are related to one another, there are many different groups with different cultures. The most important group in the tales of the First Age were the Edain. Although the word Edain refers to all Men, the Elves use it to distinguish those Men who fought with them in the First Age against Morgoth in Beleriand. Those Men who fought against Morgoth in the First Age were divided into three Houses. The First House of the Edain was the House of Bëor, which entered Beleriand in 305 F.A. and was granted the fief of Ladros in D ...

Elves: Encyclopedia II - Witch-king of Angmar - The Second and Third Ages

The first sighting of the Nazgûl in Middle-earth was reported in 2251 of the Second Age. For the next 1200 years, the Lord of the Nazgûl would serve Sauron as his second in command. He fought in the war against the Last Alliance of Elves and Men between 3434 and 3441 of the Second Age. It was in 3441 that Sauron was defeated by Isildur and the nine Nazgûl disappeared from Middle-Earth. One thousand years into the Third Age, Sauron took a new form as the Necromancer, and founded the fortress of Dol Guldur in southern Mirkwood in 1050 of the Third ...

Elves: Encyclopedia II - Nirnaeth Arnoediad - The version of the story in the published Silmarillion

In the year 473 of the Years of the Sun in the First Age, Maedhros decided that taking the offense against Angband might help the Ñoldor regain their former lands. In the almost two decades since their defeat in the Dagor Bragollach, the Ñoldor had lost control over the entire north of Beleriand, and were for the most part reduced to refugees dwelling in Hithlum and Nargothrond. Gondolin was shut and unknown. Under the Union of Maedhros all the Elves of Beleriand, as well as the Edain, Dwarves, and the newly arrived Easterlings were ...

Elves: Encyclopedia II - Nord Elder Scrolls - Society

Today, Nordic society still exists largely as it always has, and may varyingly be described as a peasant state. Contrary to the habits of most other species, including those of other races of men, most Nords live on the land in small towns, villages and hamlets, while only a minority of the population exist in large scale cities. It is in this socio-political climate that they thrive, with most of them either working the land as farmers or foresters, or in manufacturing as smithies and woodworkers. Unlike most of the other cultured peoples o ...

Elves: Encyclopedia II - Live action role-playing game - History

Technically, many childhood games are simple LARPs (even though they don't bear that name), and so in that sense LARPs may have been around since the dawn of humanity. Fantasy LARPs (as distinct from pure historical re-enactments) probably originate with the founding of the Society for Creative Anachronism in Berkeley, California on May 1, 1966. A similar group, the Markland Medieval Mercenary Militia, began holding events on the University of Maryland, College Park in 1969. These groups were largely dedicated to accurately recreating ...

Elves: Encyclopedia II - Half-elven - The First Age

Two important marriages in the First Age of Middle Earth resulted in the mixing of elvish and mortal blood. The first of these was between the mortal Beren of the House of Bëor and Luthien, daughter of the elf Thingol, king of the Sindar and the Maia Melian. Beren died in the quest for the Silmaril, and in despair, Luthien's spirit departed her body and made its way to the halls of Mandos. Mandos allowed them a unique fate, and they were re-bodied as mortals in Middle ...

Elves: Encyclopedia II - Ent - Language

Ents are not hasty creatures, they take their time; even their language is "unhasty". In fact, their language appears to be based on an ancient form of Common Eldarin, later enriched by Quenya and Sindarin, although it includes many unique 'tree-ish' additions. There are actually two different languages: Old Entish. Originally, the Ents had a language of their own, described as long and sonorous; it was a tonal language (like Chinese). It is unknown if a non-Ent could even pronounce Old Entish correctly: it was filled with many ...

Having deceitfully assumed a beautiful appearace, and now calling himself Annatar, "the Lord of Gifts", he befriends the Elvish smiths of Eregion, and counsels them in arts and magic. Not all the Elves trust him, especially the Lady Galadriel and the elf-king Gil-galad, High King of the Ñoldor, but few others heed them. At Sauron's behest, the Elves forge the Rings of Power and they are given to the leaders of Elves, Men and Dwarv ...
