Spiritual Dictionary on Elf Arrows Elf Arrows: Triangular pieces of flint which appear all over the word. The name comes from their description in Scotland. Some claim they could be used as weapons by being hurled with great force. They were supposed to provide protection from fairies and could cure illness--at least illness caused by fairies. In fact, there were "fairy doctors," people who specialized in treating diseases caused by fairies. One cure of such a disease was to drink water into which an elf arrow had been dipped. Dictionary on Alfheim, Alfhem Alfheim, Alfhem (Icelandic, Swedish) (alf elf (cf Icelandic elfrom river, channel) + heim, hem home) The home of elves in Norse mythology; the meaning commonly ascribed to the word elf as a fairy or sprite needs reexamination, as the myths bear out the assumption that an elf denotes a channel between the divine source of an entity and its vehicle or body; in other words, that the elf is the intermediate nature or soul of any being. In the Edda, Alfhem is the "teething gift" bestowed in the morning of time on the god Frey, the planetary deity, indwelling consciousness, or lord of our earth-system with all its components, so that Elf-home is the abode of souls on this sphere. The warriors of Odin on earth use the sword of Frey (the spiritual will) to do battle in the "giant world" of matter. Alfhem is to Frey as the human soul (elf) is to a human being. Elf - Elves at Christmas.
In USA, Canada, and the United Kingdom, the modern children's folklore of Santa Claus typically includes diminutive, green-clad elves as Santa's assistants. They wrap Christmas gifts and make toys in a workshop located in the Arctic. In this portrayal, elves slightly resemble nimble and delicate versions of the dwarves of Norse mythology.
The vision of the small but crafty Christmas elf has come to influence modern popular conception of elves, and sits side by side with the fantas ...

 | | | elf: Encyclopedia II - Elf - Characteristics of traditional elves
Elf - Elves in Norse mythology.

In Old Norse they are called álfar (singular, nominative case: álfr), and although no older or contemporary descriptions exist, the appearance of beings etymologically related to álfar in various later folklore strongly suggests that the belief in elves were common among all the Germanic ...
