EIGHT BODIES, THE

The Egyptians maintained that we have not one but eight bodies, beyond the merely physical:

AB -- Consciousness

KHAT -- Unconscious

REN -- Prestige/collective  unconscious (the "name")

KA -- The personality, astral body

KHAIBIT --  The out-of-body body, etheric double

SEKHET -- The elan vital

KU --  Omniscience

BA -- Atman

Compiled by the Sage Patanjali Maharishi in the Yoga Sutras, the Eight Limbs are a progressive series of steps or disciplines which purify the body and mind, ultimately leading the yogi to enlightenment.

This article details the eight limbs of the Raja Yoga system, one of the four main paths of Yoga.

Yoga has eight steps for self-realization. Of these two are most important. These need to be mastered before heading towards the other six because without these the asanas will end up being just mere exercises to keep the body fit.

 The first two steps are called Yam and Niyam . These need to be followed internally for preparing oneself for the higher consciousness.

Winds of Eight Directions. Most people are usually moved by the winds of the eight directions:

(1)  Praise;

(2)  Ridicule;

(3)  Suffering;

(4)  Happiness;

(5)  Benefit;

(6)  Destruction;

(7)  Gain;

(8)  Loss.
