Dutch: Encyclopedia II - Dutch-Americans - Dutch-Americans

According to the 2000 United States Census, more than 4.5 million Americans state total or partial Dutch heritage. Some ethnic promoters guess that the total number of Americans with Dutch ancestors is as high as 8 million (2.7% of the American population), or even 17 million. Dutch-Americans - Immigration. The Dutch first came to America in 1609 and explored the Hudson River on the ship De Halve Maen. They came looking for a way to Asia, but found many furs and good farm land. Dutch: Encyclopedia II - Going Dutch - Etymology
The phrase "going Dutch" probably originates from Dutch etiquette. In the Netherlands, it is not unusual to pay separately when dating. Several phrases using Dutch that show Dutch people in a negative light, e.g. Dutch courage, Dutch uncle, Dutch wife, were created because the Netherlands used to be a great rival to England in the 17th century (especially the Dutch East India Company). It should be noted, however, that Dutch often refers to Germany rather than the Netherlands, e.g. Pennsylvania Dutch. See also: Anglo-Dutch Wars, List of ...

Dutch: Encyclopedia II - Dutch language - Dutch as a foreign language

The number of non native speakers of Dutch who voluntarily learn the language is small. This is partly because Dutch is not geographically widespread and because in its home countries The Netherlands and Belgium most of the population is proficient in other European languages. In The Netherlands German is spoken with a high level of proficiency (especially in the regions bordering Germany) and the language is part of the core curriculum in schools for 2-5 years. In Belgium, German is less widely spoken, and not always required, but it ...

Dutch: Encyclopedia II - Flemish dialects - Dutch

It is a common misunderstanding to confuse these dialects with the official language of Flanders which is the Dutch standard language (Algemeen Nederlands). The Dutch language as spoken in Flanders is not a separate language from Dutch, but there are some distinct differences in vocabulary and pronunciation, similar to that between British and American English (or perhaps between English in England and English in Scotland). On the other hand, the Flemish speaking people use exactly the same grammar and orthography as the Dutch. The term Flemish is thus usually used to distinguish the Dutch spoken ...

The Anglo-Dutch Wars (Dutch: Engels-Nederlandse Oorlogen) were fought in the 17th and 18th centuries between Britain and the United Provinces for control over the seas and trade routes. They are known as the Dutch Wars in England and as the English Wars in the Netherlands. Anglo-Dutch Wars - Background. Dutch: Encyclopedia II - Double dutch - Going double Dutch

The phrase "going double Dutch" means using two types of contraceptive at the same time (a practice common in the Netherlands): the man wears a condom, the woman swallows an oral contraceptive. This is supposed to be the safest type of sex, because it simultaneously protects against pregnancy and venereal diseases (like AIDS). It is not recommended to use two condoms (either two male condoms or one male condom and one female condom) at the same ti ...

Dutch: Encyclopedia II - Dutch language - Grammar

Like all other continental West Germanic languages, Dutch has a word order that is markedly different from English, which presents a problem for some Anglophones learning Dutch. The Dutch written grammar has simplified over the past 100 years: cases are now mainly used for the pronouns, such as ik (I), mij, me (me), mijn (my), wie (who), wiens, wier (whose), allthough the latter is quite formal and rarely used in speech, comparable to English ‘whom’. Nouns and adjectives are not case inflected (e ...

Dutch: Encyclopedia II - Dutch grammar - Verbs

Verbs in Dutch can be classified as weak, strong, and irregular. Dutch grammar - Weak verbs. Weak verbs form their past tenses by addition of a dental, -d- or -t-. The rule Dutch children are taught is the " 't kofschip (the merchant ship) rule", that is, if the verb stem ends with the consonants of 't kofschip (-t, -k, -f, -s, -ch or -p), the past tense dental is a -t-; otherwise it is a -d-. Linguists put it more simply: an unvoiced consonant at the ...

Dutch: Encyclopedia II - Dutch language - History

The West Germanic dialects can be divided according to tribe (Frisian, Saxon, Franconian, Bavarian and Swabian), and according to the extent of their participation in the High German consonant shift (Low Germanic against High Germanic). The present Dutch standard language is largely derived from Low Franconian dialects spoken in the Low Countries that must have reached a separate identity no later than about AD 600. An early Dutch recorded writing is: "Hebban olla vogala nestas hagunnan, hinase hic enda tu, wat unbidan we nu" ( ...

Dutch: Encyclopedia II - Dutch grammar - Nouns

In Dutch, nouns generally describe persons, places, things, and abstract ideas, and are treated as grammatically distinct from verbs. Nouns are marked for number and size. In Dutch, there are three genders: masculine, feminine and neuter. The gender of a word determines the articles used with it and the pronouns referring to it. Sometimes masculine and feminine nouns are collectively called de-words, whereas neuter nouns are called het-words, in accordance with the definite article used with them. Traditionally, pronouns ...

Dutch: Encyclopedia II - Dutch grammar - Pronouns

Dutch grammar - Personal and possessive pronouns. Just like with nouns and adjectives, most aspects of the old Germanic noun case system have been lost in the personal pronouns in modern Dutch. Just like in English, the main remaining distinction is that between subject and object, and the old dative and accusative forms have merged into one object form. The only exception to this is the third person plural, which retains separate forms for direct objects and indirect objects, though even native speakers often ...
