Dust: Encyclopedia II - Carnivàle - Overview

At the beginning of the first episode, the carnival's manager (a dwarf named Samson) says: "Before the beginning, after the great war between heaven and hell, God created the earth and gave dominion over it to the crafty ape he called man … And to each generation was born a creature of light and a creature of darkness...and great armies clashed by night in the ancient war between good and evil. … There was magic then, nobility, and unimaginable cruelty. … So it was, until the day that a false sun exploded over Trinity and man forever traded away wonder for reason." This quotation offers a glimpse into t ...

Dust: Encyclopedia II - Large Magellanic Cloud - Features

Like many irregular galaxies, the LMC is rich in gas and dust, and it is currently undergoing vigorous star formation activity.(1) As such, it is home to the Tarantula Nebula, the most active star-forming region in the Local Group. The LMC is full of a wide range of galactic objects and phenomena that make it aptly known as an "astronomical treasure-house, a great celestial laboratory for the study of the growth and evolution of the stars," as described by Robert Burnham, Jr.(2) Surveys of the galaxy have found roughly 60 globular clu ...

Dust: Encyclopedia II - Alternative biochemistry - In fiction

In the realm of science fiction there have occasionally been forms of life proposed that, while often highly speculative and unsupported by rigorous theoretical examination, are nevertheless interesting and in some cases even somewhat plausible. One of the major sentient species in Terry Pratchett's Discworld universe is Trolls. Their being mineral-based has various interesting effects on their physiology and culture. Trolls eat rocks, which suggests that their biochemistry is similar to that of plants. A heterotrophic silicon-based l ...

Dust: Encyclopedia II - Beastie Boys - Influence

The Beastie Boys are equally influential in rock and rap music history. Their blending of hip-hop and punk rock genres could be seen as a precursor to the rapcore and nu metal genres of the late 1990s, such as Limp Bizkit and KoЯn. The band were also leaders in the use of sampling techniques, with Paul's Boutique being notable for its effective use of samples. The influence of this album can be seen on Beck's 1996 Odelay album (also produced by the Dust Brothers). Also, the Beastie Boys' success as a trio of white emcees may h ...

Dust: Encyclopedia II - 55 Cancri - The planets

Traditionally, extrasolar planets are named using their primary star's name plus a lowercase letter in order of the planet's discovery from the star, starting with "b" rather than "a" (b, c, d, e, f, ...). So, for example, the third planet discovered around 55 Cancri is called "55 Cancri d". Capital letters (A, B, C, D) are used for stellar companions; this leads to a situation here where 55 Cancri's distant red dwarf companion is called 55 Cancri B, but the star's first discovered planet is called 55 Cancri b. Sometimes, to prevent confusion, the planet is called 55 Cancri Ab, refering to its primary as ...

Dust: Encyclopedia - Drought

A drought or an extreme dry periodic climate is an extended period where water availability falls below the statistical requirements for a region. Drought is not a purely physical phenomenon, but instead is an interplay between natural water availability and human demands for water supply. Drought - Meanings. Dust: Situation Vacant - Saviour Wanted

India needs rejuvenation. This rejuvenation will come only with the revival of our great Indian ideals. India needs shakti. For this, extensive re-building needs to be initiated for the country to acquire physical, mental and spiritual strength.

For creating this stupendous energy, India needs a new spiritual awakening. A new direction. The inspiration for such an awakening could come from a prophet of peace, for instance, someone like Guru Nanak, who proclaimed: "Love the saints of every faith, Put away the pride! The essence of religion is Humility, service, and sympathy.  Not fine clothes, Not the yogi'sgarb and ashes, Not the blowing of horn, Not the shaven head, Not long prayers...".

Dust: Encyclopedia II - Redneck - History

“Rednecks” are largely descendants of the Ulster-Scots and Lowland Scots immigrants who travelled to North America from Northern Ireland and Scotland in the late 17th and 18th centuries. The Ulster-Scots had historically settled the major part of Ulster province in northern Ireland, after previous migration from the Scottish Lowlands and Border Country. The "Celtic Thesis" of Forrest McDonald and Grady McWhiney holds that they were basically Celtic (as opposed to Anglo-Saxon), and that all Celtic groups (Scots Irish, Scottish, Welsh and ...

Dust: Encyclopedia - Coal dust

Coal dust is a fine powder form of coal. Because of the brittle nature of coal, coal dust may occur during mining or transportation, or whenever coal is handled mechanically. Coal dust - Risks. Coal dust suspended in air is explosive. Coal dust has far more surface area per unit weight than chunks of coal, and is more susceptible to spontaneous combustion. Note this may mean that a nearly empty coal store is a greater explosion risk than a full one. Coal workers' Pneumoconiosis, or bl ...

In Australia, they are commonly known as willy willies, from an Aboriginal word. Dust devil - Larger dust devils. The larger dust devils are often observed in times of atmospheric turbulence, especially common in the San Luis Valley of Colorado. Dust: Encyclopedia II - Coal - World coal reserves

It has been estimated that, as of 1996, there is around one exagram (1 × 1015 kg) of total coal reserves economically accessible using current mining technology, approximately half of it being hard coal. The energy value of all the world's coal is well over 100,000 quadrillion Btu (100 zettajoules). There probably is enough coal to last for 300 years. However, this estimate assumes no rise in population, and no increased use of coal to attempt to compensate for the depletion of natural gas and petroleum. A recent (2003) study by ...

Dust: Encyclopedia - Abacus

An abacus is a calculation tool, often constructed as a wooden frame with beads sliding on wires. It was in use centuries before the adoption of the written Hindu-Arabic numeral system and is still widely used by merchants and clerks in China and elsewhere. Although often attributed to the Chinese, the abacus is thought to have been invented by the Babylonians around 2400 BC. The first abacus was almost certainly based on a flat stone covered with sand or dust. Lines were drawn in the sand and pebbles used to aid calculations. ...

Dust: Encyclopedia II - Trinity Blood - Crusniks

The Crusniks (based on Krsnik) are vampires who feed on the blood of other vampires. They possess immense power and destructive potential, easily able to overwhelm even the most powerful of Methuselahs and with enough strength to raze a whole city. Their lifespan is longer than that of normal vampires. However, whereas normal vampires in this series are born or infected, Crusniks are a result of an experiment, "expendable goods for the Mars Colonization project", according to Abel. Cain states at one ...

Dust: Encyclopedia II - Flour - Flour production

Milling of flour is accomplished by grinding grain between stones or steel wheels. Today, "stone-ground" usually means that the grain has been ground in a water-operated mill, in which a revolving stone wheel turns over a stationary stone wheel, with the grain in between. Many small appliance mills are now available, both hand-cranked and electric. Flour dust suspended in air is explosive, as is any mixture of a finely powdered flammable substance with air see Lycopodium. Some of the worst civilian fatalities ...

Dust: Controlling Emotional Turmoil

The world today suffers more from emotional and mental turmoil than from anything else. In fact, it is just the partial truth. Almost all suffering and most problems have emotional base. For instance, it is well known that emotionally disturbed people are more prone to accidents than others.

David Spangler writes: As man continues to grow in his recognition of what is within himself, he will increasingly realise that the creative source of his world is indeed in his own consciousness... When man knows the reality of the power within his consciousness to create inner changes, then he can make those personal changes, knowing that they will be positively reflected in his environment. Dust: Encyclopedia II - Africa - Etymology

The name Africa came into Western use through the Romans, who used the name Africa terra — "land of the Afri" (plural, or "Afer" singular) — for the northern part of the continent, as the province of Africa with its capital Carthage, corresponding to modern-day Tunisia. The Afri were a tribe — possibly Berber — who dwelt in North Africa in the Carthage area. The origin of Afer may be connected with Phoenician `afar, dust (also found in most other Semitic languages); some other etymologies that have ...

Dust: Bhagavata Purana's Eternal Krishna

The Bhagavata Purana and other works tell us stories of how the divine is always trying to break away from its divine fetters. When you are pervasive and omnipresent, how can you have the freedom to play? Being omnipresent, you are constantly watched by those who adore you, worship you and serve you. You need a disguise.
