The Evening Telegraph was launched in 1871 by a former Irish nationalist Lord Mayor of Dublin Edmund Dwyer Gray. The newspaper was unavowedly Irish nationalist in its politics. The News Letter has historically been a hardline Unionist title. On April 1, (April Fool's Day) 1993, the paper published a reader poll and of those who took part, 42% agreed with the violence of the loyalist paramilitary groups, the UDA and the UVF. However when it was purchased by the Mirror Group in the 1990s Montgomery moved it to a more pro-peace process position. This was continued under the stewardship of the then editor, Geoff Martin. Dublin Evening Standard: Encyclopedia II - Sunday Independent - Content

The newspaper is a general Sunday newspaper, covering news and politics. It is published in five sections: News, Sport, Business, Property, and Living, as well as a magazine section. In terms of news, the newspaper maintains a broadsheet outlook, however it has come into much criticism lately for its increasing introduction of lifestyle features into the main section, as well as tending towards sensationalism occasionally. It is perhaps better described as a middle-of-the-road newspaper, rather than a newspaper of record. The paper is strongly opposed to the Provisional IRA and Sinn Féin, and most issues carry ...
