Drums Dictionary: Hindu - Hinduism Dictionary on Sound

sound: Shabda. As the darshana, or "seeing," of the Divine is a central article of faith for Hindus, similarly, hearing the Divine is spiritually indispensable. The ears are a center of many nadis connected to inner organs of perception. Gurus may when imparting initiation whisper in the ear of disciples to stimulate these centers and give a greater effect to their instructions.

During temple puja, bells ring loudly, drums resound, conches and woodwinds blare to awaken worshipers from routine states of consciousness.

Meditation on inner sound, called nada-anusandhana, is an essential yoga practice. Listening to the Vedas or other scripture is a mystical process. Traditional music is revered as the nectar of the Divine.

See: Aum, nada, Siva consciousness.

A unique musical ensemble consisting of graduated pitch marching bass drums is usually found in marching bands and drum and bugle corps. A bass line typically consists of four to six tuned bass drums, although variations do occur. Smaller lines are not uncommon in high school marching bands, and huge basslines of at least 16 musicians have been seen. The drums typically are between 18" and 32" in diameter, but some groups have used bass drums as small as 14" and larger than 36". Unlike the other drums in a drumline, the bass drums are ...

Drums Dictionary: Hardship Throws Up A Million Saviours

Hardship Throws Up A Million Saviours

When we run for cover as the sky opens up and the rain comes thundering down to the accompaniment of a million kettle-drums; when in the middle of the night, our bed dances across the floor of our room in the arms of a mighty earthquake, we exclaim: "Please, God, help me out of this!" - no matter in what language we've muttered the words, no matter what age we are living in, or where. Then there is one God, the protector of all humanity.

Drums Dictionary: Encyclopedia - Tad

TAD was one of the heaviest bands to come out of Seattle back in grunge's heyday. Their music was inspired mostly by 70s metal, rather than punk. TAD's music was loud, uncompromising and bleak. The band themselves had a heavy look, dressing like northwestern lumberjacks. Led by the 300 lb (136 kg) ex-butcher Tad Doyle (Thomas A. Doyle - Boise, Idaho) on vocals/guitar TAD was formed in late 1988 by Doyle and bassist Kurt Danielson, who met at a Christian potluck dinner. They played together in a band called Bundle of Hiss until 1988. Doyle hi ...

Drums Dictionary: A message to the world from the Mayan Elders about the coming Venus Transit

A message about the forthcoming Venus Transit from the Mayan Elders thru Carlos Barrios, a Mayan Ajq'ij that has been given the mission by his elders to begin sharing the prophecies and teachings of the Mayan peoples with the rest of the world.

“Now that we are at the gates of a New Path of Venus over the Face of the Sun on June 7-8 2004, the least we can do is expecting a new change in the outcome of humanity. Death is knocking at our doors. The drums of war can be heard. Intransigence, the destruction of our Mother Earth, pollution, new diseases, the resurging of old plagues, global warming, the fear of world conflict, intolerance and fundamentalism in any of its manifestations, negligence, apathy, the confusion or worst still the extreme estrangement of drug abuse. --- While reason and logic tell us that we have to stop all this madness, we are living in the age of prophecies, and the responsibility of balancing things is ours. There is no more time to play; it is know time to act. --- The great guardian brings the energy of a new beginning, the beginning of a new era.”

It sounds like a pessimistic prophecy but can be compared to what the Indian Avatar Sri Kalkis view. Kalki says that the Venus Transit of June 2004 is the start of the Golden Age, but he is also saying:

“Humanity is entering the most crucial phase of its existence. The coming decade shall witness the most unprecedented and undreamt of changes in the course of its long evolution. There is nothing much humanity could do about it, other than to understand the changes occurring around it and to flow with the changes that are overpowering it. Towards the end, humanity would enter a new age, The Golden Age. The transition will be a painful process. Only those whose relationships are in order would make it easily.”

Drums Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Hip hop music - Characteristics

Hip hop is a cultural movement, of which music is a part (as are graffiti and breakdancing). The music is itself composed of two parts, rapping, the delivery of swift, highly rhythmic and lyrical vocals, and DJing, the production of instrumentation either through sampling, instrumentation, turntablism or beatboxing. Another important factor of Hip-Hop music is the fashion that originated along with the music. The fashion was a representation of the music. See also:

Andal's Divine Union With Sri Narayana

The Tiruppavai, a 1,000-year-old collection of 30 Tamil songs in praise of Krishna, was composed by Goda when she was barely 15 years of age. It is sung during the month of Margazhi in Tamil Nadu, between mid-December and mid-January. The Tiruppavai is also called Godopanishad because it contains the quintessence of the scriptures.

An incarnation of Bhudevi, Goddess Earth, the consort of Mahavishnu, Goda's appearance was to show us the pathway to God through bridal mysticism - looking upon God as the bridegroom.

Drums Dictionary: Festivals in Hinduism - The Kavadi Festival

The Kavadi Festival

Perhaps the most potent propitiatory rite that a devotee of Shanmukha undertakes to perform is what is known as the Kavadi. The benefits that the devotee gains from offering a Kavadi to the Lord are a millionfold greater than the little pain that he inflicts upon himself.

From Hindu Fasts & Festivals by Sri Swami Sivananda.

Drums Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Tangerine Dream - History

Edgar Froese arrived in West Berlin in the mid-1960s to study art. He worked as a sculptor and studied under Salvador Dalí, among others. His first band, the R&B-styled The Ones, was gradually dismantled after releasing only one single, and Froese turned to experimentation, playing minor gigs with a variety of musicians. Most of these gigs were in the famous Zodiac nightclub, although Froese's band was also invited to play for his former teacher Dalí. Music was mixed with literature, painting, early forms of multimedia, and more ...
