A limited amount of glucose can be derived from glycogen stored in astrocytes, but it is consumed within minutes. For most practical purposes, the brain is dependent on a continual supply of glucose diffusing from the blood into the interstitial tissue within the central nervous system and into the neurons themselves.
Therefore, if the amount of glucose supplied by the blood falls, the brain is one of the first organs affected. In m ...

Many of the prejudices held by and associated with the "old" families are not held by the Weasleys, nor do the Weasleys take pride in their heritage of pure magical blood. For instance, a prejudiced family like the Malfoys would never associate with a Muggle-born witch like Hermione Granger, much less allow her to spend the summers with them. A recurring theme in the Harry Potter series is racism against halfbloods - that is, witches or wizards of Muggle descent. Draco Malfoy has calle ...

Swedish Massage
Swedish Massage: While the healing power of touch is an ancient concept, this technique is named after Swedish massage pioneer, Peter Ling (1776-1839). This technique emphasizes that all strokes go toward the heart. Swedish massage uses five main strokes to stimulate the circulation of the blood through the soft tissue of the body. Theory Swedish Massage By stroking and kneading the body, metabolic processes and blood circulation are stimulated. Basic Swedish massage is a relaxing massage that relieves stress, improves sleep, and enhances circulation by improving muscle tone and flexibility. Techniques of Swedish Massage Effeurage or Stroking Stroking with a light pressure is repeated rhythmically. Fresh blood flows to the tissues, nourishing them with increased oxygen and other nutrients. Petrissage or Kneading Picking up the muscles by squeezing and pressing. Petrissage helps reduce edema and decongests muscles by encouraging the expulsion of fluids from the muscle. Friction or Rubbing Circular or transverse strokes. Friction massage helps free muscles from scar tissue formed after an injury. It also helps loosen joints and tendons. Tapotement or Percussion Performed by cupping or clapping. It can be light or deep. Range of Motion Mobilizes joints. Parts of the body are rotated, flexed, and extended.

AMBROSIA
AMBROSIA The Greeks confused nectar with ambrosia exactly as we do. Originally it was thought that this "drink (not food!) of the gods" derived from some such word as ambrotos, that is "immortal", similar to Hindu amrita, "deathless". We now know that the source is the Greek word for "blood" or "gore," brotos (a cognate of our word "blood") referring to the blood sprinkled upon altars and idols in ancient times - as our word, "to bless", derives from Anglo-Saxon bletsian "to sprinkle with blood." This, combined with haoma > AM (Gk. hemo), formed the bloody "unguent" of religious ritual.

Reptile - Circulatory.
Most reptiles have closed circulation via a three-chamber heart consisting of two atria and one, variably-partitioned ventricle. There is usually one pair of aortic arches. In spite of this, due to the fluid dynamics of blood flow through the heart, there is little mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood in the three-chamber heart. Furthermore, the blood flow can be altered to shunt either deoxygenated blood to the body or oxygenated blood to the lungs, which gives the animal greater co ...

Ayurveda Ayurvedic Dictionary on LAUGHTER THERAPY
LAUGHTER THERAPY: Laughter is said to be addictive. Given its several health benefits, that is desirable. Firstly it gives a sense of well being because of release of endorphins and neuropeptides. By ensuring the inhalation of more oxygen, the lifeline of the system, it makes people feel better. It decreases stress leading to lowered stiffness of muscles - muscle relaxation easing headaches, body aches and other muscular problems. As blood vessels get dilated, blood pressure falls by 10-20 mm mercury after 10 minutes of laughter - very useful for patients of hypertension. With levels of antibodies and natural killer cells going up with laughter, it also improves the immunity - evident from thousands of laughter club members have decreased incidences of cough and cold. Laughter has innumerable other benefits. It proves a potent anti-stress factor, decreases asthmatic attacks, increases stamina, relives arthritic pain, ensures good sleep and elevates mood. Since the serotonin levels go up after laughter, it is an effective antidote for depression too. Haasya Yoga is a method of group laughter that is based on yogic techniques. The exercises are designed based entirely on yoga stretching, breathing and variety of stimulated laughs, starting with deep breathing. As simulation helps stimulation, exercise induced laughter - that compliments but is not a substitute for natural laughter - increases the capacity for the latter. Helping individuals increase their capacity to laugh more, be more self-confident and self-expressive. Positive qualities are cultivated, thereby removing negative emotions as jealousy, fear, guilt and anger. The laughter club is in effect a behavioral training institute that spontaneously raises spirits at no cost. The concept of a laughter bank, where people come up with creative ideas for different types of laughter, for instance is to bring in play fullness into the atmosphere. The fun, frolic and childish attitude generated not only reduces inhibitions, but also curtails tensions. Under certain conditions though laughter therapy is not recommended. Patients with hernia, advanced piles, eye complications, Angolan pain and those who have just undergone major surgery should not venture into this therapy without the explicit advice of a doctor. Pregnant woman should also preferably avoid laughter sessions till some conclusive data regarding the safety is available. Patients suffering from tuberculosis, chronic bronchitis and other respiratory infections where phlegm is produced must take precaution against spread of infection. Finally, even a normal person experiencing discomfort while laughing, must discontinue immediately and seek expert medical help.

ACUPRESSURE
ACUPRESSURE Acupressure is an ancient healing art that uses the fingers to press key points on the surface of the skin to stimulate the body’s natural self-curative abilities. When these points are pressed, they release muscular tension and promote the circulation of blood and the body’s life force (sometimes known as qi or chi) to aid healing. Acupuncture and acupressure use the same points, but acupuncture employs needles, while acupressure uses the gentle, but firm pressure of hands (and even feet). There is a large amount of scientific data demonstrating why and how acupuncture is effective. But acupressure, the older of the two traditions, was neglected after the Chinese developed more technical methods for stimulating points with needles and electricity. Acupressure, however, continues to be the most effective method for self-treatment of tension-related ailments by using the power and sensitivity of the human hand. Foremost among the advantages of acupressure’s healing touch is that it is safe to do on yourself and others - even if you’ve never done it before - so long as you follow the instructions and pay attention to the cautions. The only pieces of equipment needed are your own two hands. You can practice acupressure therapy anytime, anywhere. Acupressure can be effective in helping relieve headaches, eye strain, sinus problems, neck pain, backaches, arthritis, muscle aches, tension due to stress, ulcer pain, menstrual cramps, lower backaches, constipation, and indigestion. Self-acupressure can also be used to relieve anxiety and get better sleep at night. There are also great advantages to using acupressure as a way to balance the body and maintain good health. The healing touch of acupressure reduces tension, increases circulation, and enables the body to relax deeply. By relieving stress, acupressure strengthens resistance to disease and promotes wellness. In acupressure, local symptoms are considered an expression of the condition of the body as a whole. A tension headache, for instance, may be rooted in the shoulder and neck area. Thus, acupressure focuses on relieving pain and discomfort, as well as responding to tension, before it develops into a disease - before the constrictions and imbalances can do further damage. The origins of acupressure are as ancient as the instinctive impulse to hold your forehead or temples when you have a headache. Everyone at one time or another has used their hands spontaneously to hold tense or painful places on the body. More than 5,000 years ago, the Chinese discovered that pressing certain points on the body relieved pain where it occurred and also benefited other parts of the body more remote from the pain and the pressure point. Gradually, they found other locations that not only alleviated pain, but also influenced the functioning of certain internal organs. (Definition in part from the book Acupressure’s Potent Points, by Michael Reed Gach, director of the Acupressure Institute.)

Ayurveda Ayurvedic Dictionary on Ritucharya
Ritucharya Given that the term prakriti denotes both body constitution and nature, it is only expected that with the changing seasons of nature there will be corresponding effects on the bhutas and thereby the doshas of the constitution. Cold, dry weather for instance enhances vata, hot humid climate increases pitta, while cold, wet weather aggravates kapha. To avoid such continued aggravation leading to imbalance of the doshas, Ayurveda prescribes a seasonal routine to preserve the doshic balance as the seasons change. For each season therefore, there is a unique diet (ahar), a distinct mode of living (vihara) and routine living (karya). These keep your doshas in a state of equilibrium and help you cope with the stresses and strains of changing seasons. In Ayurvedic literature the year is divided into six ritus (seasons) – varsha (monsoon), sharada (autumn), hemanta (winter), shishira (late winter), girshma (summer) and vasanta (spring). The effects of these ritus on the three doshas and the suggested lifestyle for each is as indicated below: Monsoon: Diet · Digestive power weakens and bodily vata is aggravated. · It is advisable therefore to be moderate in your diet. · Come rains, tuck into astringent, bitter and pungent food along with wheat & rice. · Never forget to boil & cool your water. And if possible, add a little honey. Conduct · Go for oil massages and regular baths. · Do not indulge in daytime sleeping. · Avoid moving in the sun, and excessive physical exercise · Do not indulgence in excessive sex. Autumn: Diet Yummy dishes with astringent, bitter or sweet tastes are for you to enjoy. Have lots of rice, barley, wheat, along with curd, cabbage, cheese, milk. Avoid meat, yoghurt. Conduct · This is the right time to go through purgation & blood letting treatment. (for detail see Panchkarma) · Avoid excessive sunbathing · Do not expose yourself to easterly winds. Winter: Diet · Dig into piping hot, oily, sour & salty food along with rice. Also plenty of cow’s milk & cane juice. · Drink warm water and it will improve your life span. · Avoid light food to pacify vata. Conduct · Don’t expose yourself to cold. · Go for an invigorating oil massage followed by tepid water bath. · Cover your body with sufficient warm wraps · Indulge in intense sexual pleasure. Spring: Diet · Kapha that has already accumulated is liquidified by the heat and disturbs your digestive system. · Avoid heavy, oily, sour & sweet food & drinks that may aggravate kapha. · Take in barley, wheat, rice, scrup, & bitter vegetables. Conduct · Go for vigorous exercises, and oil massages. · Cut down your smoking habit. Summer: Diet · Take in plenty of fluids. Avoid dehydration. · Avoid food with pungent, acid & salt tastes. · Tuck into sweet, cold & oily foods. Meat of birds & animals are good for you. Conduct · Avoid excessive physical exercises & excessive sex. · Avoid sunlight and harmful UV rays. · Enjoy the cool breeze of your garden & fragrance of flowers.
