Dream Dictionary traditions: Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Wolves

Wolves

Wolves may have positive or negative meaning and may represent good or evil in dreams. They could represent hostility, aggression, sneakiness, and ferocious appetites. In some cultures, wolves represent feminine energies and in others masculine. In the Native American culture and tradition, the wolf is a symbol of a mysterious and wonderful teacher. Wolves are considered to be powerful guides who offer wisdom and enlightenment. When interpreting your dream consider your feelings in it and the mood upon awakening. If you were mesmerized and not afraid, then give your dream positive meaning and accept its message.

Dream Dictionary traditions: Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Dragon

Dragon

Dreaming of a dragon depends greatly on the individual’s attitude towards such creatures. In British mythology, dragons were viewed as fearsome and dangerous beasts, while in Chinese tradition dragons were considered harbingers of good luck. Therefore, it is important that the dreamer recall the circumstances of the dream. If the dream was dark and ominous, the dragon probably symbolizes the “beast in you,” which could mean that your own weaknesses could well get the best of you. But if the dream was happy and optimistic, something wonderful is going to happen.

Dream Dictionary traditions: Dream Interpretation - Running

Running

Running is a traditional symbol of health and vitality in addition to being a means of fleeing potential danger. Thus running could be considered a dream of virility, as well as fear.

Usually, in a dream of running in which fear is the dominant emotion, you will find that you can either run all night and successfully escape the danger (albeit with a serious emotional drain), or you find that you continue to falter and stumble, making the object of your fear even more terrifying. In the latter case, try to relate the dream situation to a situation in your life where you are feeling incredible pressure. Sometimes a simple change of perception can solve the problem.

Dream Dictionary traditions: Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Bears

Bears

A bear in a dream is a very rich and complicated dream symbol. In order to understand it, objective association need to be made. Bears are solitary animals and the females are solitary mothers. They hibernate in a cave and they are generally not predatory animals. A bear is only aggressive when provoked, and as such times he is dangerous and deadly. Bears in dreams may represent a period of introspection and depression. However, this may be a part of a healing cycle, where the dreamer has retreated into himself in order to regenerate and in order to create something new and valuable in his life. Bears are highly regarded symbols in a variety of cultures and traditions, including the Native American tradition. Carl Jung said that all wild animals represent latent affects (feelings and emotions). The interpretation of the bear in a dream may be influenced by your perception of it and by the events in the dream. The bear may represent qualities in your character or specific aspects of your personality. Bears are usually associated with danger and aggression, but this is a very narrow view of this powerful dream symbol.

Dream Dictionary traditions: Dreams Interpretation Dictionary - Devil

Devil Dream Symbols:

In Jewis-Christian-Islamic traditions Satan was represented by a horned fertility god, a personification of the fertilizing power of nature. In psychological terms, a fertilizing agent is something within the psyche that can inaugurate a new phase in the individual's development. It also may represent the repressed contents in the unconscious that can lead one to a fuller and balanced life.

From SpiritCommunity

Devil Dreaming about devils and demons is usually very frightening and you may awake from fear. The devil does not generally represent something outside of yourself. It usually symbolizes the most negative and least developed part of you. It may be that part of you that is ignorant and destructive. You can determine the meaning and message in your dream by looking at all of the details carefully. All dreams are good dreams in that they bring unconscious materials to the conscious mind. Only then can you begin to effectively cope with the more unpleasant sides of your personality. Carl Jung called this negative side the 'shadow." The devils in your dreams could be representations of your personal shadow or they could be a glance at the collective shadow.

Dream Dictionary traditions: Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Rat

Rat:

1. Dreaming of a black or brown rat is a sign of illness or treachery ahead. In European tradition, rats are associated with theft of foodstuffs and the spread of disease, and therefore seeing brown or black rats running free is a warning to see your doctor and to be careful whom you trust.

2. Seeing brown or black rats in cages, however, is a sign that small irritations in your life will be dealt with. Catching a rat in a trap indicates freedom from worry and a release of tension.

3. White rats, on the other hand, are a sign of protection from beneficent forces or entities around you.

Dream Dictionary traditions: Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Religious Icon

Religious Icon:

1. If the icon featured a portrait of a saint or other religious figure, find out what tradition is associated with that person. For example, if the saint was St. Christopher, then you may be on your way to taking a long journey. If the saint was St. Jude, something wonderful and totally unexpected will happen. If the portrait was of the Virgin Mary, someone will intercede for you in a disagreement and put it to an end.

2. Icons in general seem to bring a message that coming changes in your life, however stressful they may be, are beneficial and can be dealt with fairly easily.

Dream Dictionary traditions: Dream Interpretation - Electric shock

Electric shock

Electric shocks and other energy emanations are often associated with trying to cross a taboo line or some other kind of punishment. Sometimes the energy is not from a traditional source (e.g., cattle prod, electric fence, stun gun), but is rather the projection of power against us from another dream figure. Probably because of the paralysing power of electric shock and the invisible nature of electricity, we feel invisibly restrained or unable to move. The taboo we are violating may be obvious, such as trying to enter a place that is forbidden or it may be more general, trying to assume too much personal power in the cosmos. Either way, being confronted by electrical or other energy metaphors can be a jolting dream event.

Did you notice where the shock came from, or did it surprise you? Did the shock hurt or disable you, or was it merely a nuisance?

Dream Dictionary traditions: Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Fish

Fish

The fish is a very powerful and positive image in many world traditions.

1. To the Babylonians, Phoenicians, and Assyrians, it was honored as a symbol of fertility.

2. In Native American tradition, the fish is a symbol for mystical secrets, for it can swim to the deepest regions of the ocean and explore its hidden knowledge.

3. In British lore, it was believed that eating fish before lovemaking could enable a couple to conceive a child.

4. The early Christians used the fish as the symbol for the Christ Consciousness. It was widely believed that this symbol resulted from the Greek acronym for \"Jesus Christ, Son of God.\" But there is also the fact that the coming of Jesus ushered in the Age of Pisces the Fish, which encapsulates the mysticism, love, and happiness to which all world traditions ascribe to the fish.

5. In Scandinavia, fish was considered an aphrodisiac, and was popularly consumed on Friday, the feast day of Freya, Goddess of Love - and in her honor Friday was a day dedicated to lovemaking.

There are, therefore, many possibilities if you dream of a fish - all good, even if the fish was a greatly feared one like the shark. If there is a possibility of a pregnancy, dreaming of a fish could mean that a child is on the way, and the pregnancy and birth will be uneventful and result in a healthy baby. If the dreamer is in love but is not yet sure about the beloved's feelings, dreaming of a fish strongly indicates that the feelings are indeed reciprocated. Dreaming of catching fish, either with a pole or with a net, indicates success and prosperity ahead. Seeing fish swimming in a clear pool indicates that a number of secrets about yourself and the world around you are going to suddenly become clearer.

Dream Dictionary traditions: Dream Interpretation - Relatives

Relatives

Relatives are powerful features of both the waking and dreaming worlds. As a consequence, interpreting dreams of relatives is a complex task. There are hundreds of different possible interpretations that originate within the world of the dreamer as well as from classical psychology.

The reason dreams of family are so prevalent is that everyone has a desire to know what "normal" is, and then act that way in the world. Countless times, clients will come to therapy complaining, "I just want a normal family," or "I just want a normal marriage." The definition of this idea comes from our relatives and how well they fit into or detract from our idea of normalcy.

Dreams of family may affirm or undermine "normal" feelings about ourselves. Extended family relations are very significant in developing the family lore and ritual. As you mature and reflect critically on normalcy in your understanding of it, these rituals either affirm or work against the norms of your perspective. Who does what, why and when is often determined by influences in the extended family. The result is that we construct a family story that defines who we are in our family and what our family means in the world around us.

Relative dreams of this type lend themselves to archetypal interpretations that offer insight into how the dreamer sees him or herself in relation to the larger human community represented by the relatives. To interpret dreams of this kind, discern which relatives were in the dream and whether they are still living or dead in waking life. Often, relatives who have passed away are alive in our dreams. Usually, one of two circumstances exist. Either the activity in the dream reminds you of a ritual aspect of the relationship with this relative, or your relationship with the relative is incomplete.

Dreams about relatives are often recurring. These can have both prophetic or historic meaning. This is especially true in cases where the central characters are relatives with whom there is either emotional tension or uncertainty concerning their health. If there is emotional tension, the dream may be identifying the source of the tension to create an opportunity to resolve it. If there are particular relatives with precarious health, the dreams may resolve, or warn of, impending deaths in the family.

The place and occasion for the relatives' appearance in the dream are important to the interpretation of it. For example, if only the women in your family appear with you in a dream of an activity that they have historically participated in together, you may see yourself as joining with the family in new ways. There are numerous variations on this dream:

1. Not wanting to join the activity (ambivalence about traditional expectations).

2. Joining a group of exclusively opposite-gendered family members (confusion about fitting into the family on your terms).

3. Joining a group of family members with something unique in common; i.e., all bald, all with cancer, all widowed, all single, etc. (identifying with or having concern over ending up like others whom you pity).

While family members are powerful dream icons, their meaning can be quite diverse. Often, free association is the key to discerning their impact on your dreams and the meaning of that influence.

Individual family members, especially fathers and mothers (or representations of them) are often prominent in dreams. For better or for worse, they are primary influences in the shaping of our personalities. This includes how we respond to our environmental stimuli, as well as how we value ourselves and our inner nature. Consequently, another significant aspect of relative dreams is what these dreams show about how our individual ego development and personality strength have been influenced by individual relatives, for good or ill.

Personality strengths and weaknesses often express themselves in alternating generations. For example, in one generation, the father is relentless in expressing anger. In the next generation, anger becomes taboo and inexpressible. In this way, dreams of the individual parent often have a compensatory effect.

Often you will have a dream that includes a particular family member in a very unusual situation for that person (for example: scuba diving with Grandma). Often in this type of dream there will be plenty of other symbols and images that point to the true meaning of the dream.

Dream Dictionary traditions: Dreams Interpretation Dictionary - Demons

Demons/Devil

Devil

Basic Meaning - A fear of those repressed contents of the unconscious that are, when acknowledged the very forces that could bestow a harmonious and balanced life.

(1) The Satan of Jewish - Christian - Islamic tradition was originally a horned fertility god, a personification of the fertilizing power of Nature {the tradition of God is separate from Nature}. In psychological terms, a fertilizing agent is something within the psyche that can inaugurate a new phase in the individual's development.

(2) The evil connotations of the devil figure may reflect the dreamer's fear of those repressed contents of the unconscious that are, in fact, the very forces that - if mobilized and utilized - could bestow a new and fuller life. What we repress is invariably something that had great value for us but on some occasion in the past gave rise to guilt-feelings or a fear of punishment. It is our fears that invest the unconscious with the fearsome characteristics of a dark underworld inhabited by evil monsters. In reality, the unconscious contains all the energy and wisdom we need for healing and wholeness.

It might be said that our fundamental human task is the conversion of the devil within ourselves, that is, converting negatively charged {dissident, destructive} psychic forces into positively charged {life-enhancing and unifying} powers. But you won't convert the devil with brute force, only with love. The negatively charged psychic forces are the ones you neglect and despise or fear. They become positively charged when you acknowledge them and integrate them into your conscious life.

If we do not recognize the "devil" within ourselves, we shall project him onto others and thereby give more scope for hatred and destruction {the real devil!} in the world.

{3} In certain contexts - if, for example, he has horns or is sexually involved with naked women - the devil may be a sexual symbol. If sexuality is repressed in such a guise in a woman's dream, it is possibly because she has a fear of sexual relations. In a man's dreamthe indication might be that he has a guilt-ridden attitude towards his own sexuality {which Freud might trace back to anxiety arising out of the normal male infant's erotic feelings for his mother}.

Demons

Demons in dreams probably represent parts of your unconscious mind that have been repressed and neglected and are now threatening to disrupt or mutilate the psyche. They should be approached lovingly, given attention and integrated into your conscious life. This will bring about their "conversion": They will cease to threaten and will contribute their vital energies to the enhancement of the self.

Self-knowledge - knowing what we are carrying around with us in our unconscious - is the only sure defence against what in ancient times was called demonic possession, which in psychological terms means the conscious ego being taken over by unconscious forces {obsessive fear or anger, or whatever}.

Dream Dictionary traditions: Dreams Interpretation Dictionary - Dragons

Dragon Traditions of Myth in East & West

From Dragonorama

Dragons have a deeply rooted connotation in Western culture associating them with evil, whereas in Eastern stories they can also be kind and are considered very wise

The Western Dragon Tradition

Western dragons aren't necessarily evil - but they often are. At the very least they tend to be solitary and bad-tempered.

The typical Western dragon - or Wyrm - is a large, scaly creature resembling a dinosaur or a large lizard. It usually has wings and can fly, often it will breathe fire.

Western dragons tend to live in caves in mountains or hidden away in the forests. They often guard a stash of gold. Western dragons are often used to symbolise greed.

Note: Caves symbolize the unconscious. In dreams a dragon in a cave would often symbolize unconscious fears, or a need to confront {and slay} unconscious fears.

Dragons vary as much as people do. Although many Western dragons are brutal, ignorant creatures who kill and eat humans others are ancient, wise creatures more akin to those found in the East.

The Oriental Dragon Tradition

Whereas Western dragons are usually found in mountains or forests, Oriental dragons are more likely to be found in the sea. Many oriental dragons resemble water snakes.

Oriental dragons rarely breath fire, instead if a mortal annoys one then it is likely to result in great floods.

Note: When confronting the unconscious there is often a reluctance by the conscious mind to accept what is there. Often the conscious ego will throw annoying barriers so one will continue to repress or ignore unconscious contents.

The traditional Western dragon is often seen as a brutish creature to be feared. Oriental dragons tended to be wise and benevolent - as long as they were given the respect they deserved. Their chief flaw was their vanity and if insulted could cause dreadful natural disasters.

Oriental dragons fly to and from heaven in clouds but do not usually have wings. Some sources say that they gain wings after living for a thousand years.

Famous Dragons, Serpents & Wryms

Abraxas

The dragon Abraxas originated in Persian mythology however the name has been taken up elsewhere. As such descriptions of Abraxas vary considerably.

Abraxas is usually described as having either a man or a serpent's body with the head of a cockerel (sometimes two such heads). He has two dragon's feet and carries a whip in his human hands.

The name and image of Abraxas were of importance in Gnosticism and other esoteric teachings. Some identified Abraxas with a supreme deity.

There is much numerological interest in the name Abraxas. The number of letters - seven - is considered important by some. There is also interest in the fact that the letters of the name can be made to sum to 365 in some systems. Abraxas is thus considered the Lord of the 365 Virtues, one of which represents each day of the year.

Some people have sugested that the name "Abraxas" could itself be derived from "Abracadaba".

The name is considered to have great power and is inscribed on stone talismans called Abraxas Stones.

How do various drugs/nutritional components influence dreaming?

[Section compiled from answers by various people]

[By turner@remarque.berkeley.edu (Michael Turner)]AMINO ACIDS & SUPPLEMENTSSaw some mention of Taurine recently. B vitamins (6 and 12)?

 I'veused Choline+Inositol combo w/some success.Inositol is a B-vitamin (12?

) that aids in the uptake of Choline, which is a precursor to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Cholineis present in lecithin, which is itself present in egg whites, soyproducts, and other sources of protein. One would have to constantlyglut oneself with tofu in order to get the equivalent of 500mg tabletof Choline+ Inositol, however.

FOODSFish contains some substance that also helps, forget what it's called, though. Cheese (esp. cheddar, for some reason) and bananas to alesser extent, contain some stuff that can cause wild dreams. Soy,eggs, etc., as mentioned above.

TEAS and HERBSHave tried various teas and herbs, but most were either ineffective orunspeakably vile. (DON'T like vivid dreams of large bugs burrowingthrough my head, thank you very much.) Would be willing to try againwith some guidance, though.

PRESCRIPTION DRUGSPrescription drugs of various kinds can have dream effects; so much sothat most sleep/dream labs have some kind of funding from pharm.companies, if they aren't owned and operated by them outright. Never-theless, prescription drug labels seldom warn of "nightmares"; perhapsthat all falls under "sleep disturbances."Barbiturates can suppress REM. Don't know about tranqs & anti-depressants, though. New Wave antidepressions (Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil)are serotonin- effecting, so some effect might be expected.

LEGAL PSYCHOACTIVE DRUGSBoth caffeine and alcohol can suppress REM - odd, since one is a CNSstimulant, the other a CNS depressant. Nicotine?

 Don't know.

ILLEGAL PSYCHOACTIVE DRUGSControlled/illegal substances have been studied vis-a-vis dreams, buthazy on the details I learned. (Was high at the time, I guess....)THC can suppress REM somewhat. Various psychedelics effect aspects ofserotonin metabolism. Speed keeps you from sleeping; amphetaminepsychosis might be drug-induced-anxiety + REM deprivation. Newerstuff, such as illegal/controlled "smart drugs", "designer drugs",etc. I don't know about, but it would be surprising if they had nodream effects.

[By pryan@prairienet.org (Pamela Ryan)]Someone posted a while back that a combination of Choline (600 mg,equals 1429 mg Choline Bitartrate) and Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5,500 mg) boosts dream recall.

[By pzinken@mswe.dnet.ms.philips.nl (P. ZINKEN)]Point is i am at one side a notorious coffee-addict, and on the otherside one who smokes a joint or a hookah from time to time. I'lldescribe my states of dreaming for both, because they are ratherdifferent.

Caffeine:Under influence of caffeine (and i mean rather much, after drinking, for example, 10 to 15 0.25l cups), i tend to sleep very light. If iget to dream it usually is a lucid dream. Thus, it seems caffeinechanges the conciousness while sleeping. Also, i tend to have morenightmares if i drink too much coffee.

Hasjiesj:There are times when i like to smoke some weed or hasjiesj and then goto bed stoned (on these days i usually smoke between 0.5 and 0.75grams) It does influence the dream state very heavy. Hasjiesj has thetendency of relaxing you, and also has a tendency to make emotionsstronger. While dreaming this results in very real-feeling dreams.Last night i smoked about a half gram of Noorderlicht, a kind of weedgrown here in Eindhoven, and after going to bed and falling to sleep(almost instantly) i dreamt something rather silly, but i couldn'thelp thinking it was the real-world instead of a dream. Thus, hasjiesj makes the dream stronger, more deep. Problem is, anightmare will seem more real too. Also, it seems to make it moredifficult to dream lucid (i am able to dream lucid).

Combination:Well, this one is the one i get at the most. After a long day ofworking and coffee-drinking, i sometimes let myself go and make ablow. This results in a combination of an up-drug and adown-drug. And, strangest of things, this combination does neverresult in no-drug.The caffeine still leaves the property of easily getting into a luciddream, while the hasjiesj makes the sleep very deep and the dreamsvery intense. I've yet to wake up from getting into lucidity whileunder influence of hasjiesj.Overal conclusion from my side thus is, drugs do have a certain effecton dreaming. And there is quite a big difference between uppers anddowners.

My method isn't the healthiest, so it's not something I want toexperiment on often, although reading your FAQ reminded me of it, andI might try it again sometime.Anyway, this is the exact method I use:1. Stay up late, past your normal sleeping time, until you are very, very tired. Do not get into bed until you are ready to sleep.2. Just before getting into bed, take from 2-4 caffeine tablets of thedosage included in Vivarin brand stimulants (I don't know the exactdosage), depending on your tolerance for caffeine.

It's my personal theory that what happens is that your body fallsasleep and begins the REM cycle...then, the caffeine stimulates yourbrain (or at least irritates it) so that your conscious mind awakens.Normally, so would your body, but if you sleep late enough, your bodywill be so fatigued that the fact of your brain awakening won't beenough to rouse it; and, if you take the right amount of caffeine, thestimulant effect will be just enough to wake up your mind, withoutforcing it completely awake.

Anyway, I don't know if I would recommend this as a method ofattaining lucid dreaming, but it has worked for me.

The Kava Kava root, a traditional drug from the Polynesian islands, islittle known but highly recommendable. It is said to take away stressand tension, very mildly tranquilizing while clearing and sharpeningthoughts. Also told to help dreaming, especially for lucid dreamingexercises. From my own experience, it causes a deeper but shorter(!)sleep with more intense dreams.

[The following holds for Germany, I don't think other countries aremuch different.] Kava Kava root is available from pharmacies, althoughnot a "standard" drug and sometimes it takes time for the pharmacistto obtain supply. At least one company makes capsules with Kava Kavaroot extracts ("Kava ratiopharm"). They are sold as a stress reliever.Though not as effective as the whole root, perhaps the method ofchoice for many - the traditional way of chewing the roots for a longtime does not suit Western people, who typically find the taste ratherbad. Attention: do not combine with alcohol, it increases theundesired effects of the latter (same with barbiturates, etc.)
