Dream Dictionary traditions: The Mind and Dreaming

During dream, the mind creates various kinds of objects out of the impressions produced by the experiences of the waking state. The mind reproduces the whole of its waking life in dream through the force of Avidya (ignorance), Kama (desire or imagination) and Karma (action). The mind is the perceiver and the mind itself is the perceived in the dream. The mind creates the objects without the help of any external means

Dream Dictionary traditions: Raja Janaka’s Dream

Raja Janaka ruled over the country of Videha. He was once reclining on a sofa. It was the middle of the day in the hot month of June. He had a short nap for a few seconds. He dreamt that a rival king with a large army had invaded his country and slew his soldiers and ministers. He was driven out of his palace barefooted and without any clothes covering him.

Dream Dictionary traditions: Sri Nimbarkacharya on Dreams

As some dreams are indicative of future good or bad fortunes, it is impossible for the individual to dream a good or a bad dream according to his own choice, he, being in his present state of bondage, ignorant of the future. The individual soul, in his emancipated state, can certainly exercise his will for the creation of vision in dreams; but the power, in the state of his bondage, remains eclipsed by the superior will of the Universal Soul, who directs his actions according to the merits and demerits of his past conduct; and the suppression of his power is due to his being encaged in the body.

Dream Dictionary traditions: Dream of Chuang Tze

Chuang Tze, a Chinese Philosopher, once dreamt that he was a butterfly. On waking, he said to himself, “Now, am I a man dreaming that I am a butterfly, or am I a butterfly thinking that I am a man?”

Dream Dictionary traditions: Dream Hints

Dreams and Death are rock foundations of all philosophy. Dream world is totally different from the waking world. But some facts are strikingly common to both: 1) Sometimes we have a dream within a dream. 2) During sleep, sometimes we are conscious of the fact that we are asleep and we are dreaming. 3) In dreams more often than not we assume a body that is the master of the dream world. 4) Sometimes we feel extremely helpless amidst the facts of the dream world. We cry and we weep to the extent that the physiological system is affected.

Dreams are a powerful tool in developing deep insight about yourself and your life purpose. Dream Dictionary traditions: Spiritual dreams - The sign of a new dawning?

Nowadays, my mailbag produces an ever increasing number of dreams which, when analysed, are spiritual or contain elements of spirituality - but why, and do these same dreams provide clues? Much can be learned from dreams, and I believe that they are screaming out at us some answers to these questions. Interestingly, this increase coincides with the general trend pervading modern society of the population apparently splitting into categories, which are becoming ever more entrenched in their own respective beliefs.Perhaps the interactive virtual reality programmes of this life have begun to run their course. Could it be that the increasing numbers of these dreams are just the early signs which do precede a new dawning of an age of spiritual awareness?

Dream Dictionary traditions: Asclepius and dream healing

Asclepius was the Greek god of healing. His healing sanctuaries were found throughout the known Hellenic world. This tradition was active for almost 2000 years from around 1300 BCE to 500CE. In times of illness and when the physician was unable to help, one would turn to Asclepius for healing. Healing would come about through a visitation of the healing god (or one of his totems – the dog or snake) in a dream. The dream would then result in a spontaneous healing or an indication of what had to be done or undone to bring about healing.

Dream Dictionary traditions: What is Healing dreams?

How can dreams be used for healing? Many of the people I interviewed were women who had suffered breast cancer. Their stories were as varied and individual as the dreamers themselves and ranged from little bears helping with house cleaning to dramatic stories of physical and spiritual loss and rebirth played out in dreaming and in waking.
When we finally feel confident in exploring the elements of dream diagnosis, the next step is to explore the elements of healing in our dreams. Diagnosis is presented not to frighten us, but to allow us to begin a journey of healing.

Dream Dictionary traditions: Dream Interpretations Dictionary - Home, family

Dream Interpretation Home, family

A dream of home often relates to our sense of emotional and financial security. The most common home theme is that of dreaming of living in the house in which you were a child. Our first home will always remain an emblem of home, family, connections and traditions throughout our lives. The dream may say that you feel nostalgic about the past, or you are trying to relate the past to your present life. Consider this dream as an opportunity to reflect on early patterns and understand your essential beliefs about family and home.

Dream Dictionary traditions: Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Man

Man

All different kinds of people clutter our dream landscape. The men in your dream may include family members or total strangers. You may dream about your father, son, husband, or friend and should interpret the dream according to its details. A man, particularly the father figure, may represent collective consciousness and the traditional human spirit. He is the Yang and his energy, when mobilized, creates the earthly realities. Depending on the details of the dream, the masculine figure could be interpreted as the Creator or Destroyer. At times, women dream about men that are strangers to them. These men may represent the women's unconscious psychic energy. Carl Jung called the stranger in a woman's dream the "animus." He represents autonomous, unconscious energy and he plays a vital role in obtaining a

Dream Dictionary traditions: Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Children and Dreams - The Witch

Witch : Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Children and Dreams - The Witch

The Witch

Many youngsters dream of a wicked witch in the tradition of the character in The Wizard of Oz. This witch may be terribly scary, or it may be a more ambiguous character with some redeeming qualities.

What you need to know:

As with monsters, the witch could represent a real-life person in your child's world, one who is sometimes cranky and unfair. If you suspect the witch may be a science-fiction cartoon of you in your worst moments, don't take this as an indictment of your worth as a parent. Rather, use the appearance of such dreams as a measure of your child's confusion and worry. Think about how often you wish for your own reassurance. Then let your child know that she's always got someone in her corner.

Dream Dictionary traditions: Dream Interpretation - Bears

Bears

The appearance of a bear in a dream is a good example of dream interpretation as being culturally shaped. For many of us, bears are not very good companions and they represent ill temperament. In Native American traditions, however, they take on a different meaning. For the Navajo and Crow Indians, the bear is a father or grandfather figure that possesses wisdom and knowledge of the sacred.

Dream Dictionary traditions: Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Owl

Owl

It is another symbol for the unconscious. It usually represents wisdom and virtue, and your unconscious may be giving you important massages, so pay attention to the details in the dream. In the American Indian tradition, the owl is considered to be the eagle of the night. Dreaming about owls is a powerful dream, which may indicate that changes are on the way. Superstition based dream interpretations suggest that dreaming about an owl is a negative omen, which indicates a reversal in good fortune. An owl in the house predicts family arguments and chasing it away might cause things to work out for the best.

Dream Dictionary traditions: Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Melody, song

Melody, song

Hearing sounds in your dreams can be looked at from a spiritual point of view. Nice sounds are usually positive symbols. Some may say that in your dream state you have traveled to other higher and more spiritual plains. Traditional interpretations tell us that if you hear a familiar melody, you may bump into old friends. Psychologically speaking, you may have heard a song during the day and in your dream state you are simply replaying it. However, since dreams always have meaning, the song that you are dreaming about may have messages in it that will assist you in solving a problem or will help you to feel better.

Dream Dictionary traditions: Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Money

Money

The significance money has in your waking life is reflected in your dream state. Money is a symbol of power and wealth. We often judge ourselves based on our ability to make it, save it, and spend it. First consider your own relationship with money and your current financial situation as this dream could be simple wish-fulfillment. As always, consider all of the accompanying details in your dream because they will help you to understand where your issues lie. Traditional dream interpretations indicate that losing money in your dream is a good omen, and that probably the opposite will happen. Generally, money may represent those things that are most valuable to you and not necessarily cash.

Dream Dictionary traditions: Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Rooster

Rooster

The meaning of this symbol could be very much like that of chickens. However, the rooster represents male energy and possibly aggression. If you ever observed a rooster in a hen house you would notice that they are very aggressive, demanding, and territorial. This dream may be pointing to these characteristics inside of you or others. A rooster crowing is a traditional wake-up call on a farm while in literature it is sometimes symbolic of some type of a warning. If the rooster in your dream is crowing, think about your current situation and if this dream is a wake-up call in regard to a situation in your life.

Dream Dictionary traditions: Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Father

Father

Dreams with fathers in them can be looked at on several different levels. You may be dreaming about your father and expressing your feelings about him in a safe way. Traditionally, a father dream can be seen as symbolizing authority and power. In the dream you may be expressing your attitude about strengths and weaknesses as they relate to your position in life and your general attitude toward society. The image of the father could also represent the "collective consciousness," the traditional spirit, and the yang.
