Dream Dictionary place: Do dreams predict the future?

Dream FAQ Dictionary: Do dreams predict the future?

Do dreams predict the future?

A. This, like many other things commonly referred to as "paranormal",is to be considered unknown. There is much evidence against it, itwould contradict the laws of nature as recognized by most scientiststoday. (Any information getting from future to past would have tobreak the speed of light, which is impossible. More on this can befound in the sci.physics FAQ postings.) However, many people insiston having experienced "deja-vu" like situations where they came into asetting they already had dreamed of. Could they prove it?

Probablynot (cf. section 5.3) but this fact alone doesn't prove theexperiences invalid. (Proving a subjective experience *wrong* isimpossible.)

Now, how come the many deja-vus?

A common explanation is a smallmisfunction of the brain. Some piece of information, like the look ofa particular place where you haven't been before, gets from short-terminto long-term memory via some sort of "shortcut" rather than theusual remembrance mechanism. (How this exactly works is currently notknown in detail.) Then, when matching short-term against long-termmemory, you think that you have the piece in long-term memory fromsomewhere in the past while it has entered long-term memory justrecently.

This could explain some of the instances, but the possibility of themind "travelling in time" (or place, cf. section 4.1) can not bedismissed - many people claim they have done it and can do it again.

Dream Dictionary place: Dream Interpretation Dictionary - God

God

Regardless of whether we believe in a God or not, all of us have been exposed to the idea of a supreme and omnipresent being. The dilemma over the existence of God is probably the most common dilemma of them all. Everyone from time to time will have a dream about "God." Its symbolism depends on the dreamer. God in our dreams can be considered a positive or self affirming symbol. It represents truth, purity, and love. It also represents the creative energy which is abundant in all of us (whether we know it or not). For a certain number of people, in the dream state, God may have negative connotations. For them God could represent eternal punishment, damnation, and invoke massive amount guilt. Most religions consider dreams to be a pathway to God or to the spiritual realm. Through dreams we have an opportunity to have experiences which are not available during the day. Our unconscious mind may be more capable of connecting to the eternal flow of spirit and it may be the dwelling place of the soul.

Dream Dictionary place: Dream Interpretation - Underwater

Underwater

The great thing about dreams is that you can live anywhere. Being underwater can be a potentially threatening experience, as with drowning. However, it can just be the place you are, mixing with the other dream characters.

Dreams of this nature may be wish-fulfilment, especially if you enjoy swimming and spending time in water. It may also be a desire for escape from the more mundane experiences of land-locked living. Perhaps the most interesting effect of underwater dreams is when the appearance of the dream environment seems as if it is underwater even when it is not. People may be moving in slow motion, you may feel particularly buoyant, or there may be aquatic life intermingled with the above-water scenery. In dreams of this type, the dreamer may be feeling a need to escape or slow down the pace of life in order to observe the circumstances more accurately.

If you have been underwater in a dream, do you recall feeling like it was a "normal" environment for you, or were you nervous in the situation?

Kitchen

Houses in dreams generally represent the dreamer (dreamer = house). The kitchen is the heart of the house. For most families, the kitchen is a place of warmth and nourishment (emotional as well as physical). Examine the conditions of your dream kitchen and you may become aware of some emotional needs and feelings toward yourself and others. See also; House

Dream Dictionary place: Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Cave

Cave

Caves are rich and thought-provoking dream symbols. At times, a woman with reproductive issues may have a cave dream, in which case it represents the womb. The cave, as the womb, can represent new life, creativity, warmth and safety. The cave can be a general symbol of a safe place, a sanctuary or a refuge. If you are experiencing much anxiety in daily life, in your dream state you may retreat to a warm cave where you cannot be disturbed by worldly demands. The cave could also represent the mysterious and unexplored parts of ourselves. It could be symbolic of the unconscious mind, which could be a pleasant or a frightening experience. Your personal associations and experiences with caves, as well as the details and the emotional content of this dream, need to be carefully considered before making an interpretation.

Others believe that there are many different heavens and in their dreams they visit those place through soul travel. Dream Dictionary place: New Age Spirituality Dictionary on Aboriginal Dreaming

Aboriginal Dreaming

An English expression adopted by Australian Aborigines to convey ideas that, though related in their thought, are not usually denoted by a single word in any of their languages.

One sense is that of a primordial epoch, the Dreaming or Dreamtime, when beings with remarkable powers arose from the ground, descended from the sky, or appeared from over the horizon. They gave the earth its shape by creating physical features (often from parts of their own bodies), fixed life in species form, established human culture, and gave everything its name.

These creative beings, who in their totality are the ultimate explanation of all things, are themselves called Dreamings (roughly equivalent to the anthropological term totems).

Their significance to the Aborigines is not merely historical but personal and social, for each individual and group gains a distinctive identity through its association with one or more Dreamings. In many regions it is held that such beings reincarnate themselves as humans, or that they left relics behind that, to this day, are sufficiently potent to impregnate women.

This sense of oneness, in which past and present, spirit being and human being, are somehow fused, is also seen in ceremonies in which the actors wear designs and make movements symbolic or mimetic of what the Dreamings did in the Dreamtime. By extension, from these two senses of Dreaming, the Aborigines form other expressions, such as Dreaming-place (a site at which a Dreaming was active and left something of itself) and Dreaming-track (an imagined path along which a Dreaming traveled from place to place in the primordial epoch).

Contrary to what is sometimes suggested, the term has no necessary connection with the verb to dream, even though present-day revelations to humans by Dreamings normally occur while the recipient is in a dream or trance state.

Dream Dictionary place: Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Stealing

Stealing

People steal for two reasons. If they are poor and feel like they have no other alternative or if they are greedy and do not want to put the time and the effort into earning what they need. (The needs could be emotional as well as material.) Stealing alludes to moral questions in the dream's psyche. Consider all of the details of your dream and try to understand why the stealing is taking place. Are people taking from you without your permission, or are you trying to reap the benefits of that which you did not earn? The message from the unconscious may be that of self-evaluation, neediness, and morality. The understanding of this dream may bring you closer to understanding your deeper needs which will ultimately lead to greater happiness.

Dream Dictionary place: Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Travel

Travel

Many people dream of traveling in planes, cars, trains, or motor bikes. Traveling seems to be one of the most common dream themes. It is representative of our journey through life. These dreams could represent your current movement toward goals or passage through life. Difficult traveling conditions such as a dark road, a bad storm, or an accident in a car, or other vehicle may be symbolic of the difficulties that we experience in our daily journey through life. Other times dreaming about traveling to a fun place and having a great time could be a form of compensation or wish-fulfillment. This type of a dream can be an escape from our daily life and form of transcendence into a beautiful dream world. If you are constantly having dreams about traveling, take a closer look at the current situations in your life. Are things going well, or are they more difficult than you would like them to be? Are your dreams a form of escapism and entertainment or are they reassuring you that life is an adventure and to keep moving forward?

Dream Dictionary place: Dream Dictionary - Grave

Grave

  • To dream that you see a newly made grave, you will have to suffer for the wrongdoings of others.
  • If you visit a newly made grave, dangers of a serious nature is hanging over you. Grave is an unfortunate dream. Ill luck in business transactions will follow, also sickness is threatened.
  • To dream of walking on graves, predicts an early death or an unfortunate marriage.
  • If you look into an empty grave, it denotes disappointment and loss of friends.
  • If you see a person in a grave with the earth covering him, except the head, some distressing situation will take hold of that person and loss of property is indicated to the dreamer.
  • To see your own grave, foretells that enemies are warily seeking to engulf you in disaster, and if you fail to be watchful they will succeed.
  • To dream of digging a grave, denotes some uneasiness over some undertaking, as enemies will seek to thwart you, but if you finish the grave you will overcome opposition. If the sun is shining, good will come out of seeming embarrassments.
  • If you return for a corpse, to bury it, and it has disappeared, trouble will come to you from obscure quarters.
  • For a woman to dream that night overtakes her in a graveyard, and she can find no place to sleep but in an open grave, foreshows she will have much sorrow and disappointment through death or false friends. She may lose in love, and many things seek to work her harm.
  • To see a graveyard barren, except on top of the graves, signifies much sorrow and despondency for a time, but greater benefits and pleasure await you if you properly shoulder your burden.
  • To see your own corpse in a grave, foreshadows hopeless and despairing oppression.

Dream Dictionary place: Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Religion

Religion

  • If you dream of discussing religion and feel religiously inclined, you will find much to mar the calmness of your life, and business will turn a disagreeable front to you.
  • If a young woman imagines that she is over religious, she will disgust her lover with her efforts to act ingenuous innocence and goodness.
  • If she is irreligious and not a transgressor, it foretells that she will have that independent frankness and kind consideration for others, which wins for women profound respect, and love from the opposite sex as well as her own; but if she is a transgressor in the eyes of religion, she will find that there are moral laws, which, if disregarded, will place her outside the pale of honest recognition. She should look well after her conduct. If she weeps over religion, she will be disappointed in the desires of her heart. If she is defiant, but innocent of offence, she will shoulder burdens bravely, and stand firm against deceitful admonitions.
  • If you are self-reproached in the midst of a religious excitement, you will find that you will be almost induced to give up your own personality to please some one whom you hold in reverent esteem.
  • To see religion declining in power, denotes that your life will be more in harmony with creation than formerly. Your prejudices will not be so aggressive.
  • To dream that a minister in a social way tells you that he has given up his work, foretells that you will be the recipient of unexpected tidings of a favorable nature, but if in a professional and warning way, it foretells that you will be overtaken in your deceitful intriguing, or other disappointments will follow.
  • (These dreams are sometimes fulfilled literally in actual life. When this is so, they may have no symbolical meaning. Religion is thrown around men to protect them from vice, so when they propose secretly in their minds to ignore its teachings, they are likely to see a minister or some place of church worship in a dream as a warning against their contemplated action. If they live pure and correct lives as indicated by the church, they will see little of the solemnity of the church or preachers.)

Dream Dictionary place: Dream Interpretations Dictionary - Horse

Dream Interpretation Horse

The horse represents passion, sexual needs, boisterous energies. A damaged, starved, shackled, overly confined horse suggests that you are being hobbled by a restrictive condition or choice you've made. Seeing a rider on a horse or riding yourself predicts success of the project, if the reins are held firmly and a rider remains steadily in the saddle. Falling off the horse is a warning that you'd better give up a project you've planned. Dreaming about horses being in the pasture is a sign that you need more freedom and independence. Looking at a foal: a happy event will take place soon. A white horse has a spiritual meaning and stands for ambitious goals, creativeness and intellectual strength. A black horse means death or separation. Pegasus, the winged horse, is a symbol of your imagination and is a sign that you have transformed your instincts and urges into creative energies.

Dream Dictionary place: Dream Interpretation - Out-of-body Experience

Out-of-body Experience

The out-of-body experience can be a dramatic one. Clinically, this falls into a phenomenon called "dissociative experience or disorder."

Often the experiences that create this feeling are powerfully ecstatic or traumatic. In either case, the feeling is similar to watching oneself in a film. Basically, whatever is going on in the dream is so powerful that the dreamer is separating herself from experiencing it directly. The result is a self watching the self in a moment of life. Dreams of this nature can be very revealing about the self at work in the world (see Medard Boss). Lucid dreaming can also create this feeling. In lucid dreaming, the dreamer is conscious of dreaming and may be watching herself in the dream.

Dreams of this nature may create a feeling that the dreamer has projected herself into another sphere of reality, creating a sense of astral projection. This idea has been popularised by certain paranormal studies on perceptions of reality.

Native American cultures view the out-of-body experience as a fuller unity of the soul with nature. As such, it is not surprising that they hold such experiences in high regard. It is in this sense that you can consider the out-of-body experience a brush with great power-in a world of physical limitations you suddenly have the ability to go wherever you wish to go. You have complete control regarding your place in the universe.

Conversely, another possible out-of-body experience involves a complete loss of power: seeing yourself lying on an operating table in a hospital.

Does your out-of-body experience empower or frighten you?

Do you choose your travel destination or do you simply appear somewhere through no choice of your own?
