A cloister (from latin claustrum) is a part of cathedral and abbey architecture. A cloister consists usually of four corridors, with a courtyard or quad in the middle. Cloisteral life is another name for the life of a monk or nun. Thus, cloister is sometimes used as a synonym for monastery. See also. Dream Dictionary Abbey: Encyclopedia - Cadaver tomb

A cadaver tomb (or "memento mori tomb", Latin for "reminder of death") is a sarcophagus that resembles a carved stone bunk-bed with the deceased shown alive on the top level (life-sized and often kneeling in prayer) and in death on the bottom level, in the grave and complete with worms, rot, and shroud. The term is sometimes used for a tomb that shows only the cadaver without the live person. It is intended as an allegory about how we are all going to end up and, thus, how transient earthly glory is. A depiction of a rotting cadaver in art (as oppos ...

Dream Dictionary Abbey: Encyclopedia II - Carmina Burana - The manuscript

The original Carmina Burana is the manuscript collection, now in the Bavarian State Library in Munich, of over 1000 poems and songs written by the early 13th century. Johann Andreas Schmeller assigned it that title (meaning "Songs of Beuern") in 1847 when he compiled it at the Benedictine abbey of Benediktbeuern in Bavaria. Subsequent research has shown that the manuscript did not originate there; ...

Dream Dictionary Abbey: Encyclopedia II - Richard III of England - Coronation

Richard's three elder brothers were all dead. His elder brother George Plantagenet, 1st Duke of Clarence had been attainted in connection with a treason charge, meaning that his children Margaret and Edward, Earl of Warwick were also removed from the line of succession - although they were not personally accused of treason and had been given other honors. On July 6, 1483, Richard was crowned at Westminster Abbey. Except for three Earls not old enough to participate and a few lesser nobles, the entire peerage atten ...

Dream Dictionary Abbey: Encyclopedia II - The Beatles - Influences and music

As youths, the members of The Beatles were enthusiastic followers of Elvis Presley, first and foremost, and later, of British rock-and-rollers, notably Cliff Richard and The Shadows, whose stage presence and female following were often cited by the band as one of their inspirations to begin performing publicly. At the height of Beatlemania, John Lennon declared "Before Elvis, there was nothing." In comments recorded for the Anthology TV series all four band members spoke of him in glowing terms, with George Harrison (showing his knack ...

Dream Dictionary Abbey: Encyclopedia II - Canterbury - History

Canterbury - Early history. There has been a settlement in Canterbury since prehistoric times. Bronze Age finds, and Neolithic round barrows have been discovered in the area; and before the Roman arrival Durovernum was the most important settlement in Kent. Canterbury (known in Latin as Durovernum Cantiacorum) became a Roman administrative centre: it lay at the junction of three roads from their ports of Regulbium (Reculver), Dubris (Dover) and Lemanis (Lympne); and it stood on what has become known as Watling Street. The city w ...

Dream Dictionary Abbey: Encyclopedia II - Paul McCartney - 1990s

Following the release of the album Off the Ground, the similarly-scaled New World Tour took place in 1993. The live album capturing this tour, Paul Is Live, parodied the famous Paul Is Dead conspiracy of the late '60s - in both the title, and in the cover art which showed McCartney walking across the famous Abbey Road zebra crossing on his own - once again showing his willingness to acknowledge his Beatles past. (The dog with him is a descendant of Martha, his pet sheepdog from the Beatles years and inspiration for the song "Martha ...

Dream Dictionary Abbey: Encyclopedia II - Royal Ordnance - Lineage

The Royal Ordnance Factories can trace their history back to 1560 with the founding of the Royal Gunpowder Factory (RGPF) at Waltham Abbey, Essex. This was linked to the Royal Small Arms Factory RSAF at Enfield Lock and the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich. All were based near London—but not too close in case of explosion. The title of Royal Arsenal was introduced in 1805 to encompass the Royal Laboratories, Royal Gun Factory, and the Royal Carriage, which were originally separate and based in Greenwich. In 1927 these Royal Factories were transferred within the War Office from the Ministry of Munitions to the Departm ...

Dream Dictionary Abbey: Encyclopedia II - Norman architecture - Norman architecture in England

In England, Norman nobles and bishops had influence before the Norman Conquest of 1066, and Norman influences affected late Anglo-Saxon architecture. Edward the Confessor was brought up in Normandy, and in 1042 brought masons to work on Westminster Abbey, the first Romanesque building in England. In 1051 he brought in Norman knights who built "motte" castles as a defence against the Welsh. Following the invasion Normans rapidly constructed motte-and-bailey castles, and in a burst of building activity built churches and abbeys, w ...

Dream Dictionary Abbey: Encyclopedia II - Transylvania - Etymology

Transylvania was first referred to in a Latin language document in 1075 as "Ultra silvam," meaning "beyond the forest." In 1075 King Géza I of Hungary when endowing the Benedictine abbey of Garamszentbenedek (now in Slovakia: Hronský Beňadik) granted to it half of the royal salt duty to be collected on the lading point of Arieş (Hungarian: Aranyos) riverside ("in loco, qui dicitur hungarice Aranas, latine autem Aureus"), near the Turda (Hungarian: Torda, German: Thorenburg) salt mine, located "ultra silvam" (Source: Diplomata Hungariae Antiquissima, vol. Dream Dictionary Abbey: Encyclopedia II - Nun - Catholic

In Roman Catholicism a nun is the term for a female monastic regular, equivalent to that of a male monk. In the Roman Catholic tradition, there are a number of different orders of nuns each with its own charism or special devotion. In general, when a person enters a convent she has a trial period (Noviciate) that lasts a number of years. Upon completion of this period she may take her vows. In the various branches of the Benedictine tradition (Benedictines, Cistercian and Trappists) nuns usually take formal vows of stability (that is, ...
