Dowsing: Encyclopedia II - Stonehenge - Development of Stonehenge

The Stonehenge complex was built in several construction phases spanning 2,000 years, although there is evidence for activity both before and afterwards on the site. Dating and understanding the various phases of activity at Stonehenge is not a simple task; it is complicated by poorly-kept early excavation records, surprisingly few accurate scientific dates and the disturbance of the natural chalk by periglacial effects and animal burrowing. The modern phasing most generally agreed by archaeologists is detailed below. Features mention ...

Dowsing: Encyclopedia - Ley line

Ley lines are alignments of a number of places of geographical interest, such as ancient megaliths. Their existence was first suggested in 1921 by the amateur archaeologist Alfred Watkins, whose book The Old Straight Track first brought the phenomenon to the attention of the wider public. The existence of these apparently remarkable alignments between sites is easily demonstrated. However, the causes of these alignments are disputed. There are three major schools of thought: Anthropological: According ...

Dowsing: Encyclopedia - Geomancy

Geomancy (from Old French geomancie <Late Latin geōmantia <Late Greek geōmanteia< geo, "earth" + manteia, "divination") from the eponymous ilm al-raml ("the science of sand"), is a method of divination that interprets markings on the ground, or how handfuls of dirt land when you toss them. The Arabic tradition consists of sketching sixteen random lines of dots in sand. In Africa one traditional form of geomancy consists of throwing handfuls of dirt in the air and observing ho ...

Dowsing: Encyclopedia - Fortune-telling

Fortune-telling is the practice of seemingly predicting the future, usually of an individual, through seemingly mystical or supernatural means and often for commercial gain. It often conflates with the religious practice known as divination. Common methods used of fortune telling include astrology, cartomancy (fortune telling with cards), tarot card reading, crystallomancy (reading of a crystal sphere), and cheiromancy (palmistry, reading of the palms). The latter three have traditional associations in the popular mind with the ...

Dowsing: Encyclopedia II - Geomancy - Literary Background

The poem Experimentarius attributed to Bernardus (Bernard) Silvestris (Silvester), who wrote in the middle of the 12th century, was a verse translation of a work on astrological geomancy. Gerard of Sabionetta (Sabloneta), who lived in the thirteenth century, wrote or translated Astronomical Geomancy from Arabic into Latin. An original in Arabic is possible, as the traditional method of structuring a geomantic divination follows the direction of Arabic writing. (Astronomical Geomancy is erroneously attributed to Gerard of Cremona; Sabionetta is near Cremona s ...

Dowsing: Encyclopedia - Divination

Divination is the practice of ascertaining information from supernatural sources. If a distinction is to be made with fortune-telling, divination has a formal or ritual and often social character, usually in a religious context; while fortune-telling is a more everyday practice for personal purposes. Divination is often dismissed by skeptics as being mere superstition: in the 2nd century, Lucian devoted a witty essay to the career of a charlatan, Alexander the false prophet, trained by "one of those who advertise enchantments, ...

Dowsing: Encyclopedia II - William Brewster Pilgrim - Emigration

Restrictions and pressures applied by the authorities convinced the congregation of a need to emigrate to the more sympathetic atmosphere of Holland but leaving England without permission was illegal at the time so that departure was a complex matter. On its first attempt, the group was arrested at Scotia Creek, in 1607 but Brewster and others left from The Humber in 1608. In 1609, he was selected as ruling elder of the congregation. In Leiden, the group managed to make a living. Brewster taught English and later, printed and publishe ...

Dowsing: Encyclopedia - Cyclomancy

Cyclomancy is the practice of divination where one consults a spinning object, like a wheel, bottle, or top. One form of consultation is direction. When at a crossroad, take a bottle and lay it horizontally on the ground, and spun. When it stops spinning, the neck of the bottle will point to the road where your destiny lies. The popular party game "spin the bottle" is based on this concept. Dowsing sometimes makes use of cylomancy. This parapsychology-related article is a stub. You can help Wikipedia by expanding it.

Dowsing: Encyclopedia II - Geomancy - Western Methodology

Geomancy in western tradition requires no instruments and no calculations; it is based solely on the human propensity for pattern recognition. Diviners in medieval Europe used parchment or paper (expensive in those days!) for drawing the dots of geomancy but they followed the traditional direction of notation (right to left) for recording the dots. Western occultism still defines geomantic technique as marking sixteen lines of dashes in sand or soil with a wand or on a sheet of paper. The dashes aren't counted as they are made (thus ...

Dowsing: Encyclopedia II - Magic paranormal - History

Magic paranormal - Magical beliefs in Western Europe. Belief in various magical practices has waxed and waned in European and Western history, under pressure from either organised monotheistic religions or from scepticism about the reality of magic, and the ascendancy of scientism. In the world of classical antiquity, much as in the present time, magic was thought to be somewhat exotic. Egypt, home of hermeticism, and Mesopotamia and Persia, original home of the Magi, were lands where expertise in magic wa ...

Scrooby Manor was in the possession of the Archbishops of York. Brewster's father, William senior, had been the estate bailiff for the archbishop for fifteen years from around 1580. With this post went that of postmaster, which was a more important one than it might have been in another village, which had not been situated on the Great North Road as Scrooby then was. William junior studied briefly at Peterhouse College in the University of Cambridge, before entering the service of William Davidson in 1584. In 1585, Davidson went to th ...

Cambridge was a centre of thought concerning religious reformism but Brewster's time in the Netherlands in connection with Davidson's work, gave him opportunity to hear and see more of reformed religion. While, earlier in the sixteenth century, reformers had hoped to amend the Anglican church, by the end of it, many were looking toward splitting from it. (See Brownist). On Davidson's disgrace, Brewster returned to Scrooby. There, from 1590 to 1607, he held the position of postmaster. As such he was responsible for the provision of sta ...

In considering magic as tradition, a related category concerns magic in fiction, where it serves as a plot device, the source of magical artifacts and their quests. Magic has long been a subject of fictional tales, especially in fantasy fiction, where it has been a mainstay from the days of Homer and Apuleius, down through the tales of the Holy Grail, Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene, and to more contemporary authors from J. R. R. Tolkien to Mercedes Lackey and J. K. Rowling. See also: Magic (Har ...
