He was also noticed by Joan Crawford who began to date him. On June 3, 1929, in Saint Malachy's Roman Catholic Church in Manhattan, New York, Crawford and Fairbanks married. He became active in both society and politics, but Crawford didn't enjoy either of these, and they were divorced in May 1933. Fairbanks starred in several pictures with Loretta Young. She was born Lucille Fay LeSueur in San Antonio, Texas, the third child of Thomas E. LeSueur (1868-1938) and Anna Bell Johnson (1884-1958), who was of Irish and Scandinavian descent. Her older siblings were Daisy LeSueur, who died as a very young child, and Hal LeSueur. Her father, who was born in Tennessee, was of distant French Huguenot extraction. His ancestors immigrated from London, England, in the early 1700s to Virginia, where they lived for several generations. Movie historians and film buffs often look back on the year 1939 as "the greatest year in film history." Douglas Fairbanks Jr.: Encyclopedia II - The Dick Cavett Show - Notable moments

The show was often unpredictable and produced some notoriously tense moments. Artist Salvador Dalí was behaving so eccentrically that at one point Cavett interrupted him by waving his hands in Dalí's face and saying "Boojie, boojie!" The audience broke up, and Dalí appeared at a loss. A female viewer in a DC hospital bed reportedly had to have her stitches partially resewn from laughing so hard. An interview with Norman Mailer was not going well. Mailer moved his chair away from the other guests (Vidal and ...

The main protagonist is the Hon. King Rudolf is a hard-drinking, feckless playboy, unpopular with the common people, but supported by the aristocracy, the Church, the army, and the wealthier classes in general. His political rival is his younger half-brother, Michael, Duke and Governor of Strelsau, the capit ...

Douglas Fairbanks Jr.: Encyclopedia II - Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In - Memorable moments and catchphrases

The show gave considerable publicity to singer Tiny Tim, an unusual-looking man with long hair who sang in a falsetto voice while accompanying himself on ukulele. Thanks to his appearances on the show, he achieved a hit single with his piercing version of the vintage 1920s song "Tiptoe Through the Tulips." Tiny Tim was later married on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson to a woman known as Miss Vicky. Other musical moments came in the first season with some of the first music videos ever seen on TV, with cast members appearing in film clips set to the music ...

North Island was commissioned a naval air station in 1917, called Naval Air Station, San Diego until 1955. On August 15, 1963, the station was granted official recognition as the "Birthplace of Naval Aviation" by resolution of the House Armed Services Committee. The Navy's first aviator, Lieutenant Theodore Ellyson, and many of his colleagues were trained at North Island starting as early as 1911. Douglas Fairbanks Jr.: Encyclopedia II - Little Caesar - Acclaim and Legacy

Little Caesar was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Writing, Adaptation. Little Caesar was remade in 1973 as Black Caesar. In 2000 the United States Library of Congress deemed the original film "culturally significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry. It has been speculated, but never confirmed, that the anti-organized crime statutes in the United States were dubbed RICO in a sly homage to Little Caesar. Douglas Fairbanks Jr.: Encyclopedia II - Hollywood Squares - Original version

The show's greatest success was during its original run. In its heyday in the early 1970s, it was the most popular daytime show in the country and a platform for the stars to promote their work which seemed almost as popular as Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show. The show got its beginning as a black-and-white pilot episode filmed for CBS in 1965. That pilot was hosted by Bert Parks with the squares occupied by Cliff Arquette in his "Charley Weaver" comic persona, Wally Cox, Rose Marie, Morey Amsterdam, Abby Dalton, Jim Backus, G ...

Douglas Fairbanks Jr.: Encyclopedia II - Hollywood Squares - Basic rules

Although there have been variations over the years in the rules and the prize-winning aspects of the game, certain aspects of the game remained fairly consistent. 2 contestants, a woman playing Os (noughts) as "Miss Circle" and the man playing Xs (crosses) "Mister X", take turns picking a star and following the traditional tic-tac-toe strategies for which square to select. The star is asked a question and gives an answer. The contestant has the choice of agreeing with the celebrity or disagreeing if they think the star's bluffi ...

Douglas Fairbanks Jr.: Encyclopedia II - Joan Crawford - Work at Pepsi

Besides her work as an actress, from 1955 to 1973 Crawford traveled extensively on behalf of husband Al Steele's company, PepsiCo. Two days after Steele's death in 1959, she was elected to fill his vacancy on the board of directors. She was forcibly retired from the company in 1973 at the behest of company executive Don Kendall, whom Crawford had referred to for years as "Fang." She was the recipient of the Sixth Annual "Pally Award," which was in the shape of a bronze Pepsi bottle. It was awarded to the employee making the ...

Douglas Fairbanks Jr.: Encyclopedia II - Joan Crawford - Final Years

In the late 1950s Crawford's career slowed down: movie after movie saw her relegated to menial roles. She made a surprising comeback in the highly successful What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962), directed by Robert Aldrich, which cast her as a physically disabled woman in conflict with her demented sister, played by old rival Bette Davis, whom she detested. Similar roles in the handful of low-budget horror movies that followed rounded out a film career that spanned more than forty years and included performances in more than eighty ...

Douglas Fairbanks Jr.: Encyclopedia II - Joan Crawford - Career

She began her career as a dancer in a chorus line under the name Lucille LeSueur, eventually making her way to New York. In 1924 she signed a contract with MGM, and arrived in Culver City, California, in January 1925. Starting out in silent movies, Lucille worked hard to ensure that her contract with the studio would be renewed. Studio chief Louis B. Mayer was unhappy with her name, however, reportedly saying that "LeSueur" sounded too much like "sewer." A contest in the fan magazine Movie Weekly became the source of her well-known stage name. The female contestant who entered th ...

Douglas Fairbanks Jr.: Encyclopedia II - Joan Crawford - Adopted children

Joan adopted six children, according to L.A. Times articles from the time, though she kept only four. The first was Christina (born June 11, 1939), whom Crawford adopted in 1940 while she was single. The second was Christopher (born April 1941), whom Joan adopted in June of that year. In 1942, Christopher's biological mother found out where he was and managed to get him back. Douglas Fairbanks Jr.: Encyclopedia II - Hollywood Squares - Other celebrity panelists

Since the center square is the most strategic in tic-tac-toe, it is treated as the position of honor on the show.
