(Don't Fear) The Reaper: Encyclopedia II - More Cowbell - Synopsis

The sketch began as though it were a 1976 film being played during an episode of VH1's Behind the Music, a hit series in the 1990s and early 2000s that delved into the history of popular artists. The producer introduces himself as "the Bruce Dickinson" and tells the band they have "what appears to be a dynamite sound." The first take of the recording session begins soon after. The recording seems to be going well, but is ended by the band after a few moments because the cowbell line is rather loud and distracting. However, the ...

(Don't Fear) The Reaper: Encyclopedia II - Scream film - Humor

The film features numerous in-jokes and references to other horror projects. For example: a character declares that the first A Nightmare On Elm Street film was good but "the rest of them sucked"; Scream director Wes Craven directed the first Elm Street film. Also, the victims in Scream are quite self-aware: they each make clear their familiarity with, and poke fun at, teen slasher and horror flicks, which sets up their fairly ironic responses to ...

(Don't Fear) The Reaper: Encyclopedia II - More Cowbell - Impact in popular culture

About a month after the sketch aired, one of its first tributes was the creation of a website called "The Cowbell Project" [1] which was created to catalogue songs using cowbell (and even songs that would supposedly sound better if cowbell was added). Video of the sketch was made available at the site and it quickly circled the Internet. In 2003, a band in Rochester, New York named itself More Cowbell after watching a clip online. "The Cowbell Project" is the # ...

(Don't Fear) The Reaper: Encyclopedia II - Scream film - The Rules

A signature device, started in Scream and continued in Scream 2 and Scream 3, was the typical "rules" for that type of horror movie being stated by the characters. In Scream, those rules (as described by Randy) are: You will not survive the movie if you have sex. You will not survive the movie if you drink or do drugs. You will not survive the movie if you say "I'll be right back ...

(Don't Fear) The Reaper: Encyclopedia II - More Cowbell - Comedy vs. reality

Obviously, the sketch takes a great deal of liberty with the actual events surrounding the recording of "(Don't Fear) The Reaper": Fans of Blue Öyster Cult have occasionally expressed their sympathies to the band for the death of Gene Frenkle, but he was an entirely fictional character made up for the sketch. According to former band bassist Joe Bouchard, the cowbell line was performed by his brother Albert after the song was recorded. It was dubbed in afterwards, and is much quieter than what was portrayed in the sket ...

(Don't Fear) The Reaper: Encyclopedia II - Blue Öyster Cult - Cowbell

Blue Öyster Cult was parodied in a 2000 episode of NBC's famed Saturday Night Live. Actor Christopher Walken portrayed 1970s mega-rock producer Bruce Dickinson who oversaw the fictional recording of "(Don't Fear) The Reaper." In the skit, a dissatisfied, somewhat psychotic Dickinson loved the song but insisted he "gotta have more cowbell." As with many SNL skits, lines from the skit became catch phrases, even going so far as to spawn merchandise based on the skit. The band has responded to this by having a roadie ...
