Dongye: Encyclopedia II - List of Korean monarchs - Gojoseon c.2333 BC - 108 BC

Gojoseon cultural artifacts and walled cities are found throughout northern Korea and Manchuria, but it is not clear from archeological evidence when the tribal entity developed into a centralized state. China described it as a state in the 4th century BC, and later records describe it as a kingdom. Hwandan-gogi is a controversial text said to detail ancient Korean history, but its authenticity has been widely questioned. It appears to be partly based on other known "alternative history" texts. The Annals of the Danguns are recorded in Gyuwon Sahwa (1675), which is descr ...

Dongye: Encyclopedia II - Proto-Three Kingdoms of Korea - History

As Gojoseon fell to the attacks by the Han dynasty of China in 108 BC, the northern region of the peninsula and Manchuria was occupied by the states of Buyeo, Goguryeo, Okjeo, Dongye, and other minor statelets. Goguryeo's traditional founding date is 37 BC, but it was mentioned in Chinese records as early as 75 BC, or possibly even 2nd century BC. China installed four commanderies in former Gojoseon territory, but three of them fell quickly to Korean resistance. Goguryeo gradually conquered and absorbed all its nei ...

Dongye: Encyclopedia II - Korean War - Korean War 1950-1953

Korean War - The war begins June 25 1950. In the pre-dawn hours of June 25, 1950 North Korea struck across the 38th parallel behind a thunderous artillery barrage and 135,000 troops crossed the border. The Northern government claimed that South Korean troops under the "bandit traitor" Syngman Rhee had crossed the 38th parallel, and thus the South had started the war. Advised and equipped by the Soviets, with 150 T-34s, and huge reserves of manpower, their surprise attack was a devastating success. At least two th ...

Dongye: Encyclopedia II - History of Korea - Joseon

Main article: Joseon Dynasty In 1392 a Korean general, Yi Seonggye, was sent to China to campaign against the Ming Dynasty, but instead he allied himself with the Chinese, and returned to overthrow the Goryeo king and establish a new dynasty. The Joseon Dynasty moved the capital to Hanseong (formerly Hanyang; modern-day Seoul) in 1394 and adopted Confucianism as the country's official religion, resulting in much loss of power and wealth by the Buddhists. During this period, the Hangul al ...

The name "Three Kingdoms" was used in the Korean titles of the histories Samguk Sagi (12th century) and Samguk Yusa (13th century). The three city-states were founded soon after the fall of Gojoseon, and gradually conquered and absorbed various other small states and confederacies. After the fall of Gojoseon, the Han dynasty established four commanderies in northern parts of the Korean peninsula. Three fell quickly to ...

Goguryeo - Founding. According to the Samguk Sagi, a 12th century Korean history, King Jumong (posthumously called King Dongmyeongseong) founded the state in 37 BC in Jolbon Buyeo, around what is now the border between China and North Korea. However, Goguryeo likely coexisted with the declining Gojoseon around 2nd century BC, and a state named Guru (likely referring to Goguryeo, although Okjeo was sometimes also called Guru) is recorded for this period. Dongye: Encyclopedia II - Silla - History

Silla - Founding. Silla is traditionally said to have been founded around the Gyeongju region by Bak Hyeokgeose in 57 BC. The earliest recording of this date is found in the Samguk Sagi, a 12th century Korean history. Modern scholars generally consider this date to be too early, likely an attempt by the author Kim Bu-sik to legitimize Silla rule by giving it historical seniority over its ri ...

Buddhism was supported by the state and flourished in Silla. A great number of temples were built, the most notable probably being Hwangyongsa, Pulguksa and Sokkuram. Silla attached great importance to the pagoda. Silla built stone pagodas as well as wooden pagodas. From at least the 6th century, when Silla acquired a detailed system of law and governance, social status and official advancement were dictated by the bone rank system. This rigid lineage-based system also dictated clothing, house size and ...
