Dizzy Dean: Encyclopedia II - Dizzy Dean - Ace of the Gashouse Gang

Dean was best known for leading the 1934 "Gashouse Gang" team. He had a 30–7 record with a 2.66 ERA during the regular season. His brother, Paul, was also on the roster, and was nicknamed "Daffy," although this was usually only done for press consumption. The Gashouse Gang, as the southernmost and westernmost team in the major leagues at the time, became a de-facto "America's Team," and members, particularly Southerners such as the Dean brothers and Pepper Martin, became folk heroes in Depression-ravaged America, who saw in these pl ...

In most cases, the object of a pitch is to deliver the ball to the catcher without allowing the batter to hit the ball. Dizzy Dean: Encyclopedia - Ain't

Ain't is a contraction originally for "am not" and "are not", but now typically meaning "is not", "am not", "are not" or "have not". The word is a perennial issue in English usage. Prescriptivists consider the word a shibboleth; as with i'n'it for "isn't it", frequent use of ain't, critics say, is a marker of basilectal — which is to say, "vulgate" or "common people", and by inference, low class — speech. This judgement, hard to justify on etymological or grammatical reasons, remains a widespread belief, and is to some extent self-perpetuating, since prescriptivist teachers ...

Dizzy Dean: Encyclopedia - Dizziness

Dizziness (Latin: "Vertigo") is the sensation of instability. The term is fairly vague, and can include a number of more specific conditions, ranging from harmless to life-threatening. One of the most common causes of dizziness is rapid spinning; this cause lent its name to the baseball pitcher Dizzy Dean, whose windup while throwing the ball caused him to spin completely around. The show was often unpredictable and produced some notoriously tense moments. Artist Salvador Dalí was behaving so eccentrically that at one point Cavett interrupted him by waving his hands in Dalí's face and saying "Boojie, boojie!"
