Divine Power: Encyclopedia II - Absolute monarchy - Theories and History

The theory of absolute monarchy developed in the late Middle Ages from feudalism during which monarchs were still very much first among equals among the nobility. With the creation of centralized administrations and standing armies backed by expensive artillery, the power of the monarch gradually increased relative to the nobles, and from this was created the theory of absolute monarchy. Absolute monarchy - Divine Rights. Early Absolutists advocated the theory of Divine Right of Kings to justify their posi ...

Divine Power: Encyclopedia II - Absolute monarchy - Examples in the Past

An absolute monarch is one who has total control over his or her country and who claims that they rule by divine right. In order to be a successful absolute monarch, one must keep one’s threats far away and out of power, so as to ensure full political control. In addition, a monarch must have complete control over the religious groups of the country. This has been dictated by the past, as the rulers who follow these guidelines have prospered and maintained their power while those who didn’t were overthrown or killed. Charles the First, L ...

Divine Power: Encyclopedia II - Absolute monarchy - Modern examples

The remaining absolute monarchies in the modern world are in Saudi Arabia, Brunei and Swaziland. One might also add the Vatican City state (headed by an elected monarch who has absolute power). In Jordan and Tonga, the monarch (although not absolute) retains considerable power. The King of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuk, has voluntarily announced reforms, which would usher in a two-party democracy by 2008. It is not clear how much power King Wangchuk, or his successor, Prince Jigme Khe ...

Divine Power: Hindu - Hinduism Dictionary on Siddhi

siddhi: (Sanskrit) "Power, accomplishment; perfection."

Extraordinary powers of the soul, developed through consistent meditation and deliberate, grueling, often uncomfortable tapas, or awakened naturally through spiritual maturity and yogic sadhana.

Through the repeated experience of Self Realization, siddhis naturally unfold according to the needs of the individual. Before Self Realization, the use or development of siddhis is among the greatest obstacles on the path because it cultivates ahamkara, I-ness, and militates against the attainment of prapatti, complete submission to the will of God, Gods and guru. Six siddhis in particular are considered primary obstacles to samadhi:

-       clairvoyance (adarsha siddhi or divya siddhi),

-       clairaudience (shravana siddhi or divyashravana),

-       divination (pratibha siddhi),

-       super-feeling (vedana siddhi) and

-       super-taste (asvadana siddhi),

-       supersmell (varta siddhi).

The eight classical siddhis are:

1)    anima: to be as small as an atom;

2)    mahima: to become infinitely large;

3)    laghima: super-lightness, levitation;

4)    prapti: pervasiveness, extension, to be anywhere at will;

5)    prakamya: fulfillment of desires;

6)    vashitva: control of natural forces;

7)    ishititva: supremacy over nature;

8)    kama-avasayitva: complete satisfaction.

The supreme siddhi (parasiddhi) is realization of the Self, Parasiva.

See: ahamkara, prapatti, siddha yoga, psychic ability.

Divine Power: Spiritual Dictionary on Divination

Divination: The word divination is based on a Latin word that means "the faculty of foreseeing.” The word comes from the Latin word for "divine power," or "of the gods." This indicates that the true meaning of the word divination is "to make divine."

Far from being a superstitious practice, the art of divination reveals itself as a spiritual science that seeks to discover the divine meaning behind "chance" events. Divination has existed as a tool for psychic well-being and spiritual health long before modern psychology was born, although the later science has often borrowed heavily from the former.

Divine Power: Encyclopedia II - Lettre de cachet - Protests against arbitrary power

Protests against the lettres de cachet were made continually by the parlement of Paris and by the provincial parlements, and often also by the States-General. In 1648 the sovereign courts of Paris procured their momentary suppression in a kind of charter of liberties which they imposed upon the crown, but which was ephemeral. It was not until the reign of Louis XVI that a reaction against this abuse became clearly perceptible. At the beginning of that reign Malesherbes during his short ministry endeavoured to infu ...

Divine Power: Encyclopedia II - Lettre de cachet - Historical background

This power was a royal privilege recognized by the French monarchic civil law that developed during the 13th century, as the Capetian monarchy overcame its initial distrust of Roman law. The principle can be traced to a maxim which furnished a text of the Pandects of Justinian: in their Latin version, "Rex solutus est a legibus", or "The king is released from the laws." "The French legal scholars interpreted the imperial office of the Justinian code in a generic way and arrived at the conclusion that every 'king is an emperor i ...

Divine Power: Encyclopedia II - The Life Divine - Basic Themes

The universe was created from the Real Idea of the Absolute that ended in its Involution in and as the universe. Since the universe came into being as a result of powers of an Original Consciousness and Force (Spirit - Satchidananda and Supermind), then we (and all beings) must also somehow consist of spirit. That spirit is concealed in the Physical, Vital, and Mental nature, into which it descended through involution. Through Evolution the universe evolves from matter to life to mind and spirit. The purpose of existence is to discove ...
