Ageism is discrimination against a person or group on the grounds of age. Although theoretically the word can refer to the discrimination against any age group, ageism usually comes in one of two forms: discrimination against youth, and discrimination against the elderly. In many countries, companies more or less openly refuse to hire people above a certain age despite the increasing lifespans and average age of the population. The reasons for this range from vague feelings that younger people are more "dynamic" and create a positive ...

Discrimination - Ageism: Encyclopedia II - Adolescence - Discrimination against adolescents

Some adolescents and adults believe that people between the ages of 10 and 18 (or 21 or 25) are subjected to unjust discrimination. This form of discrimination is increasingly referred to as adultism. It is also called ageism, though that is simply prejudice on the grounds of age, not youth particularly. The underlying notion is that adolescents should be treated with equal respect as individuals by adults, institutions, and the law on the basis of their humanity, rather than being seen as "second-class citizens," intellectually inferior, or ...

Discrimination - Ageism: Social Studies Dictionary - Personality Development Theories

Definition and meaning of Personality Development Theories

Personality Development Theories - [Psychology]

Personality is flexible and is influenced by society. To account for possible changes in personality and for the relationship of personality change to life experience, psychologists have theories of personality development. They use attitude and personality tests to document the change or retention of traits between adolescence and early adulthood. Most people retain their views unless they have experienced a major life-altering event. Psychologist Daniel Levinson developed a theory which outlines the developmental stages experienced by adult males. Researchers have also studied the personality of women and the ways career and family, physical attractiveness, and the "empty nest" affect them. The decremental model of aging supports the notion that mental and physical decline is a natural part of the aging process. This is a narrow view of the process of aging and leads to ageism, or discrimination based on age.

Discrimination - Ageism: Encyclopedia II - Discrimination - Government sanctioned discrimination

By virtue of establishing nationalism (as opposed to globalism) every government has formalized and supported discrimination. Examples of discrimination within countries include: apartheid in South Africa; institutionalized racial segregation in the USA from the Civil War through the 1960s; the "Jewish problem" in Nazi Germany; and re-education camps in some communist countries. Many governments have attempted to control discrimination through civil rights legislation, equal opportunity laws and institutionalised policies ...

Discrimination - Ageism: Encyclopedia II - Discrimination - The paradox of discrimination

Many people assume that when there is discrimination, one group of people is given more favorable treatment than others. This is not always the case. It is possible to have cases where it is not at all clear which group is given the more favorable treatment. Example: A country is under attack during wartime. The war is so ferocious that 80% of the combatants are killed. A law has been passed to forcefully conscript males between 18-24 years of age into the frontline, but females are forbidden to participate.See also:
