Discernment: Encyclopedia II - Than - Usage

Usage prescriptionists have ordained a number of rules concerning than that those who do not wish to be edited or corrected may wish to note. These prescriptive grammarians deny that than is a preposition that invariably governs the oblique case, although it has been used as such by writers such as William Shakespeare, whose 1600 play Julius Caesar contains the line: A man no mightier than thyself or me. . . and Samuel Johnson, who wrote: No man had ever more discernment than him, in finding ...

Discernment: Encyclopedia II - Plot - Plot in literature theater movies

According to Aristotle's Poetics, a plot in literature is "the arrangement of incidents" that (ideally) each follow plausibly from the other. The plot is like the pencil outline that guides the painter's brush. An example of the type of plot which follows these sorts of lines is the linear plot of development to be discerned within the pages of a bildungsroman novel. Aristotle notes that a string of unconnected speeches, no matter how well-executed, will not have as much emotional impact as a series of t ...

Discernment: Encyclopedia II - Lincoln Memorial - Images of the memorial

The Lincoln Memorial is shown on the reverse of the United States penny. In his treatise Theory and Practise of Numismatic Design, Steve Crooks states that because the Lincoln Memorial is shown in sufficient detail to discern the statue of Lincoln on the reverse of the penny, Abraham Lincoln is the only person to be depicted on both the obverse and reverse of the same United States coin. The Lincoln Memorial is on the back of the ...

Discernment: Encyclopedia II - Classism - Classism and racism

Classism is also similar to racism in that it is often a matter of considerable controversy. Charges that a person, act, or institution is classist are often matters of intense disagreement. There is often intense disagreement between the parties over background facts, such as whether modern industrialized societies are economically stratified into discernible classes at all (and if so, how much); and there is also often also disagreement over matters of understanding, such as whether negative treatment is due to prejudice against members of lower classes, or whether it is a rational reaction to " ...

Discernment: Encyclopedia II - Nikolay Kostomarov - Historian

As a historian, Kostomarov's writings reflected the romantic trends of his time. He was an advocate of the use of ethnography and folksong by historians, and claimed to be able to discern the "spirit" of the people, including "national spirit", by this method. On the basis of their folksongs and history, he claimed that the peoples of what he called Northern or Great Rus' on one hand and Southern or Little Rus' on the other (today's Russians and Ukrainians, respectively) differed in character and formed two separa ...

Discernment: Encyclopedia II - Clitoris - Recognition of existence

Medical literature first recognised the existence of the clitoris in the 16th century. This is the subject of some dispute: Realdo Colombo (also known as Matteo Renaldo Colombo) was a lecturer in surgery at the University of Padua, Italy, and in 1559 he published a book called De re anatomica in which he described the "seat of woman's delight". Colombo concluded, "Since no one has discerned these projections and their workings, if it is permissible to give names to things discovered by me, ...

Discernment: Encyclopedia II - Chickenpox - Controversy

Although mortality due to primary varicella has declined significantly in the United States with increasing use of the varicella vaccine, as one might expect (given that zoster occurs decades after varicella), use of the varicella vaccine has had no discernible effect on zoster incidence in multiple studies, but several have suggested the incidence of dangerous adult versions like shingles may be increasing since the i ...

Discernment: Encyclopedia II - Baltic languages - Relationship with other Indo-European languages

The Baltic languages are of particular interest to linguists because they retain many archaic features, which are believed to have been present in the early stages of the Proto-Indo-European language. Linguists disagree regarding the relationship of the Baltic languages to other languages in the Indo-European family. Such relationships are discerned primarily by the Comparative method, which seeks to reconstruct the chronology of the languages' divergence from each other in phonology and lexicon. Language kinship is generally determined by the identifi ...

Discernment: Encyclopedia II - Mopsus - Mopsus son of Manto and Rhacius or Apollo

Mopsus, a celebrated prophet, son of Manto and Rhacius or Apollo. He officiated at the altars of Apollo at Claros; and from his unerring wisdom and discernment gave rise to the proverb, "more certain than Mopsus". He distinguished himself at the siege of Thebes; but he was held in particular veneration at the court of Amphilochus, at Colophon in Ionia. Having been consulted, on one occasion, by Amphilochus, who wished to know what success would attend his arms in a war which he was going to undertake, he predicted the greatest ...

Discernment: Encyclopedia II - Famous Monsters of Filmland - Magazine History 1958 - 1983

Famous Monsters of Filmland (which quickly became known to fans as simply FM) was originally conceived as a one-shot publication with no discernible future, but the first issue was so successful that it required a second printing to fulfill public demand and its established future as part of American culture were immediately obvious to both men. The success prompted spinoff magazines such as Spacemen, Famous Westerns of Filmland, Screen ...

Discernment: Encyclopedia II - Sinfonia concertante - Classical era

Until the baroque era, preceding the classical music era, the differences between concerto and sinfonia (or: symphony), had not been all that clear (sinfonia could also be used as the name for an ouverture to a stage work; for example, Vivaldi wrote concertos without discernible soloists, which stylistically have few differences compared to his sinfonias). The baroque genre that comes close ...

Discernment: Mysticism Magick Dictionary on ORFFYREUS

ORFFYREUS

Latinized name created for himself by Johann Bessler (1680-1745) by writing the letters of the alphabet in a circle and selecting the 13th letter after each letter in Bessler. He invented a perpetual-motion wheel which interested the governments of England and Austria, who offered to buy it. But, when they attempted to examine the axle in order to discern its secret, Orffyreus destroyed it and vanished into the underground.

Discernment: Encyclopedia II - Alain-René Lesage - Works for the stage

Of Lesage's miscellaneous work, including his numerous farce-operettas, there is not much to be said except that they are the very best kind of literary hack-work. The pure and original style of the author, his abundant wit, his cool, humoristic attitude towards human life, which wanted only greater earnestness and a wider conception of that life to turn it into true humour, are discernible throughout. But this portion of his work is practically forgotten, and its examination is incumbent only on the critic. Crispin and TurcaretSee also:

Discernment: New Age Spirituality Dictionary on Redaction criticism

Redaction criticism

A relatively new branch of biblical literary criticism that attempts to infer the theological purposes of the “redactors” (anonymous editors, compilers, or revisers) who helped to rewrite or shape various books of the Bible (especially the Gospels) into their final form.

Whereas form criticism focuses on discerning the literary form and origins of specific passages, redaction criticism focuses on the use of those passages to convey the message of the book as a whole. Redaction criticism assumes that the book in question was written using different sources that were selected and edited to emphasize or convey certain theological concepts.

Discernment: New Age Spirituality Dictionary on Demythologization

Demythologization

A method of interpretation practiced by Christian theologian Rudolf Bultmann (1884-1976) to free the New Testament of first-century mythical concepts and discern its essential message (Gk. kerygma).

As a theologian, Bultmann affirmed that Christianity is based on the Christ of faith and not on the Jesus of history. As a German pastor, he was concerned that the essential proclamation of that faith be preached in ways that twentieth-century persons could appropriate.

Thus, demythologization entailed eliminating such prescientific concepts as a three-story universe (sky, earth, and underworld) and miraculous healings and replacing them with contemporary concepts.

Discernment: Encyclopedia II - Sinocentrism - Response of other countries

Within Asia, the cultural and economic centrality of China was recognized and most countries submitted to the sinocentric model, if only to enjoy the benefits of a trading relationship. However, clear differences of nuance can be discerned in the responses of different countries. In Japan, an ambivalent tone was set early in its relationship with China. Shotoku Taishi (574-622), Prince Regent of Japan, is famous for having sent a letter to the Emperor of China starting with the words: "The Emperor of the land where the sun rise ...
