Dirt: Encyclopedia II - Foundation architecture - Ground compaction

The final "foundation" being the ground, it may help to understand how compaction tests are done. A sample of dirt is baked to remove moisture. A weight is then dropped from a set height onto this dirt. A small amount of moisture is added, homogeneously, and the weight is again dropped from the set height. The process is repeated until the soil stops compacting and instead begins to deform to encompass the weight. Foundations should be poured upon dirt which has an optimal conte ...

Dirt: Encyclopedia II - Jewellery cleaning - Beauty of gems

Although it is not one of the 4 C's, cleanliness affects a diamond's beauty as much as any of the 4 C's (cut, carat, color, clarity). A clean diamond is more brilliant and fiery than the same diamond when it is "dirty". Dirt or grease on the top of a diamond reduces its luster. Water, dirt, or grease on the bottom of a diamond interferes with the diamond's brilliance and fire. Even a thin film absorbs some light that could have ...

At the 2004 Summer Kōshien, Komazawa University Tomakomai High (southern Hokkaidō) took the title, and in one bound leaped over not only the Shiragawa Barrier but also the Tsugaru Strait separating Hokkaido fro ...

Dirt: Encyclopedia II - Cistern - Creating and using cisterns

Cisterns are built by digging a hole in the ground to form a tank, with a single opening in the top to allow access. The walls of a cistern must be watertight in order to retain moisture. In the early 1900s cisterns were often made with a cement floor and dirt walls that had been coated in plaster. Modern-day cisterns may also be made from above-ground tanks, made of plastic. Cisterns usually have a lid covering their openings to prevent dirt, animals, ...

In most countries, the popularity of Freestyle BMX has outgrown that of racing. Many of the top-selling magazine have no, or very limited, coverage of racing, while extensively covering every aspect of Freestyle. Freestyle can be split into several disciplines, although riders will generally participate in more than one discipline. These are Street, (skate)Park, Vert, Trails and Flatland. Rather confusingly, in competitions, park riding is often referred to as 'Street'. See also:
