Dion: Encyclopedia II - Loeb Classical Library - Volumes published

(from [1]) A tip for readers: The listings of Loeb volumes at online bookstores vary considerably. If you want to buy a volume, it is probably quickest to look it up on HUP's Web site, get the ISBN, and then search for that. Likewise, the volumes are not always listed consistently in library catalogues, so you may find them more easily if you search by ISBN or the translator's name. Loeb Classical Library - Greek. L145) Volume I. Suppliant Maidens. Persians. Prometheus. Seven Against Thebes L146) Volume ...

Dion: Encyclopedia II - Phil Spector - Influence

The influence of Phil Spector's sound and recording techniques is felt far beyond the recordings he actually produced. Many lesser producers simply attempted (with limited success) to emulate the Wall of Sound, while Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys—a fellow adherent of mono recording—considered Spector his main competition and spent hours studying and attempting to replicate and improve upon Spector's sound. Bruce Springsteen, another outspoken fan of Spector's work, emulated the Wall of Sound technique in his recording of "Born to Run". For his many contributions to the music industry, Spector was inducted in ...

Dion: Encyclopedia II - Phil Spector - Comeback

In 1970, Allen Klein, manager to three of the Beatles, had brought Spector to England to possibly record with the group, or produce for their label Apple Records. (Spector had actually met the Beatles on their historic first visit to the US in 1964, and each had long admired the other.) His own labels issued covers of Hold Me Tight by The Imaginations and the Treasures (who included future Ringo Starr collaborator Vinnie Poncia), a soul version of Buck Owens' Act Naturally by Betty Willis (covered by The Beatles on Help!), and an inst ...

Soul music - Blue-eyed soul. For more details on this topic, see Blue-eyed soul. Usually performed by white artists, blue-eyed soul is often characterized by catchy hooks and melodies. It arose from a mixture of Elvis Presley and Bill Haley-derived rockabilly and Dion and The Four Seasons-inspired doo wop; other performers include Righteous Brothers, Hall & Oates, The Rascals, Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels, Dusty Springfield, Boy George, George Michael. David Bowie's Young Americans album is wi ...

Dion: Encyclopedia II - Loeb Classical Library - Reception

Although some serious classicists spurn the Loebs (which have only a minimal apparatus criticus) as amateurish, and many non-classicists, conversely, are unimpressed by the relatively pedestrian prose of the English translations (necessary because of the desire to remain as literal as possible), the Loeb editions are nonetheless ubiquitous, still the "handy books of a size that would fit in a gentleman's pocket" that they were in ...

Dion: Encyclopedia II - Leland Sklar - Biography

Born in Wisconsin, Sklar's family moved from to Southern California when he was very young. Sklar started playing piano at age four. By the time he started secondary school his intention was to continue to study the piano. There were, however, a surfeit of pianists and no string bass players. When given the possibility to study the bass, Sklar made the change. Sklar studied music at California State University, Northridge. It was there that he met James Taylor, who invited him to play bass at some venues. They both thought that the wo ...

Dion: Encyclopedia II - Phil Spector - Alleged homicide

On February 3, 2003, Spector was arrested for murder after the body of 40-year-old actress Lana Clarkson of Los Angeles was found at his mansion in Alhambra, California. Police responded to a 9-1-1 phone call from one of Spector's neighbors and discovered Clarkson, who had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene. On November 20, 2003, Spector was indicted for Clarkson's murder. Just four weeks prior to the death of Clarkson, Spector had admitted in an interview with the British Daily Telegraph that he suffers from bipolar disorder and that he considered himself "relatively insane". [1] [2] In September 2 ...

Dion: Encyclopedia II - Phil Spector - Record producer

Spector's career quickly moved from performing to songwriting to production. Having perfect pitch, he quickly learned how to use a studio, first as an apprentice to Lester Sill and Lee Hazelwood in Arizona and, from 1960, after returning to New York, with Leiber and Stoller. His first independent production success came in 1961 with the uptempo Pretty Little Angel Eyes, a record by Curtis Lee, backed up by a local doo-wop group called the Halos. Next came "Every Breath I Take" by Gene Pitney, also backed by the Halos. Later tha ...

Dion: Encyclopedia II - Phil Spector - Eccentricity

Spector has shunned publicity and is widely regarded as eccentric, having descended into many conflicts with the artists, songwriters, and promoters that he worked with. Stories include his discharging a firearm while in the studio with John Lennon during the recording of his cover album Rock 'n' Roll and placing a loaded pistol at Leonard Cohen's head during the sessions for Death of a Ladies' Man (1977). Dee Dee Ramone also reported that Spector threatened the Ramo ...

Dion: Encyclopedia II - Lady Frieda Harris - Dion Fortune & Kenneth Grant

We know Dion admired the Thoth Tarot, because on the 8th January 1942 (six months before the Exhibition) she writes to Aleister Crowley: Dear 666, Many thanks for your letter and card. I am glad you find my tabernacles pleasant. I saw designs for two of your Tarot trumps at the Atlantis Book Shop... I should be interested to know when they are published. I have, I think, most of your books, but not 'Thumbs up'. According to Gareth Knight in Dion Fortune and the Inner ...

Dion: Encyclopedia II - Lady Frieda Harris - Creating the Tarot

Frieda lived the construction and design of the deck to the point that events in her life mirrored the cards she was working on. For example, when she was working on the Eight and Nine of Swords, she experienced all sorts of accidents and delays. Frieda was sending Crowley a regular stipend throughout the project. She was also using her society contacts to find financial backers for the exhibition of the paintings, the catalogues, and for the publication of the Tarot. The mental, emotional and spiritual pressures took its toll on Frie ...

Dion: Encyclopedia II - Lady Frieda Harris - Crowley's last days

There is break in the Frieda Harris - Aleister Crowley Letters after the Exhibition in July 1942, but she was in contact with him, particularly towards the end of his life: Letter Frieda Harris to Frederic Mellinger 7th December 1947: He was well taken care of. I made him have a nurse about 3 months ago as he was dirty & neglected & he had Watson who was most devoted & the Symonds were as nice as they knew how to be. At the last Mrs. McAlpine & the boy were there. I saw him the day he died, but he did not recognize me. I think Mrs. McAlpine was with him but she says there was no struggl ...

Dion: Encyclopedia II - Lady Frieda Harris - Frieda Harris and Wicca

The controversy over the exact origins of modern Wicca through Gerald Gardner will never end, but as Executor of Aleister's Will, Frieda had to deal with the egos jockeying for succession long before Aleister's ashes started to cool. One reason why Frieda was chosen as executor (with Louis Wilkinson) may have been that she had no aspiration to become the Head of the O.T.O.. A more cynical interpretation may be that Crowley knew Frieda's naivete in dealing with hard-bitten occultists would result in controversy and ill will. Frieda found herse ...

Dion: Encyclopedia II - Lady Frieda Harris - Thoth Tarot and Wicca

"The goal of the occult path of initiation is BALANCE. In Freemasonry and High Magick, the symbols of the White Pillar and Black Pillar represent this balance between conscious and unconscious forces. "In Gardnerian Wicca, the Goddess and Horned God - and the Priestess and Priest, represent that balance." The Secret History of Modern Witchcraft by Alan Greenfield What is interesting about this quotation is that Frieda and Aleister devote a lot of time in their letters on the Adjustment card, which is all about balance - ...

Dion: Encyclopedia II - Lady Frieda Harris - Frieda visits Crowley

The author William Holt in his autobiography describes how he accompanied Frieda to Crowley's lodgings at 93 Jermyn Street, Piccadilly. While Frieda drew some charcoal sketches, there was a discussion on the Book of Thoth that Crowley was writing. After a lull in the conversation, Crowley disappeared, possibly for a heroin injection to ameliorate his asthma, and returned with the portrait of Lam, to the obvious discomfort of Holt. Crowley claimed that Lam was “his guru”; Frieda Harris knew exactly what she was getting into. Grady Mc ...

Dion: Encyclopedia II - Lady Frieda Harris - Disciple of Crowley

On 11th May 1938, Lady Harris officially became Crowley's disciple. Crowley begins to teach her the finer points of divination - evidently she has a choice of discipline, and she opted for the I Ching: "The Yi was your own choice from several. I approved highly, because it is the key to the kind of painting after which you were groping when I met you." Letter from AC to FH, Dec 17th. (The date is 1936, but should be 1938). There is a suggestion in this quotation that Frieda had been seeking an occult outlet for her artistic talents. Perhaps she was lacking in confidence, bu ...
