Hinduism Dictionary on Deism
Deism: A doctrine which believes in the existence of God based on purely rational grounds; a particular faith prominent in the 17th and 18th centuries adhered to by several founding fathers of the United States, including Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. It holds that God created the world and its natural laws but is not involved in its functioning.

 | | | Deism: Encyclopedia II - Deism - OverviewDeism encompasses a range of views on the nature of God, particularly on whether God intervenes in the world. The classical view is that the universe was created by a God who then makes no further intervention in its affairs (the clockmaker hypothesis). In this view, the reason God does not intervene in the world (via miracles) is not that God does not care, but rather that the best of all possible worlds has already been created and any intervention could not improve it. Historically, many deists adhered to this view; others hold a m ...

 | | | Deism: Dhyana-yoga of Bhagavad-GitaDhyana-yoga of Bhagavad-Gita
In this chapter the
Lord explains that the process of the eightfold yoga system (astanga-yoga) is a
means to control the mind and the senses. This practice culminates in samadhi,
full consciousness of the Supreme. However, this is very difficult for people
in general to perform, especially in the Age of Kali. Although astanga-yoga is
recommended in this chapter, the Lord emphasises that the process of
bhakti-yoga, is better.

 | | | Deism: Encyclopedia II - Thomas Jefferson - Personal characteristics and views
Thomas Jefferson - Appearance and temperament.
Jefferson was six feet, two-and-one-half inches (189 cm) in height, large-boned, slender, erect and sinewy. He had angular features, very poor posture, a very ruddy complexion, strawberry blonde hair and hazel-flecked, grey eyes. In later years he was negligent in dress and loose in bearing.
There was grace, nevertheless, in his manners; and his frank and earnest address, his quick sympathy (though he seemed cold to strangers), and his vivacious, desultory, in ...

 | | | Deism: Encyclopedia II - Apologetics - Varieties of Christian apologeticsThere are a variety of Christian apologetic styles and schools of thought. In the Thomistic or Classical apologetics tradition philosophical arguments for God's existence are emphasized before turning to the specific case for Christian revelation claims. In the Evidentialist tradition empirical arguments about the life, miracles, death and resurrection of Christ are presented as probabilistic proofs. The Presuppositional tradition argues that belief in God must be presupposed, and from that vantage point non-theistic assumptions are proven to be fa ...

 | | | Deism: Encyclopedia II - Traditionalist Catholic - Traditionalist beliefsTraditionalist Catholics believe that they preserve orthodoxy by refusing to accept certain changes introduced since the Second Vatican Council, changes that some of them describe as "a veritable revolution".
Those who accept Pope Benedict XVI and his immediate predecessors as true Popes view the Second Vatican Council as a valid, albeit problematic, Council. But most "sedevacantists" regard Pope Pius XII as the last true Pope, and judge the Council, convened and ra ...

 | | | Deism: Encyclopedia II - Monotheism - Origins in Abrahamic or Middle East religionsWorship of a single god within a pantheon and the abolition of all others may be monotheism, as in the case of the Aten cult in the reign of the Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten, under the chiefly influence of the Eastern-originating Nefertiti. Iconoclasm during this pharaoh's rule is considered a chief origin for Abrahamic destruction of idols, holding no other God before the preferred deity (dually and subtly acknowledging the existence of the other gods, but only as foes to be destroyed for their drawing of attention away from the primary deity ...

 | | | Deism: Encyclopedia II - Freemasonry - Organisational structureThere are many different jurisdictions of governance of Freemasonry, each sovereign and independent of the others, and usually defined according to a national or geographic territory. There is no central Masonic authority, and in any event many practices are determined by Lodge custom, so any general description will inevitably be inaccurate in respect of some places.
Each jurisdiction maintains a list of other jurisdictions that it formally recognizes. If the other jurisdiction reciprocates the recognition, the two jurisdictio ...

 | | | Deism: Encyclopedia II - Thomas Jefferson - Political career to 1800Jefferson practiced law and served in the Virginia House of Burgesses. In 1774, he wrote A Summary View of the Rights of British America which was intended as instructions for the Virginia delegates to a national congress. The pamphlet was a powerful argument of American terms for a settlement with Britain, helped speed the way to independence, and marked Jefferson as one of the most thoughtful patriot spokesmen.
Jefferson was the primary author of the Declaration of Independence, and a source of many other contributions to Ame ...
