De Beers: Encyclopedia II - Jan Smuts - Miscellaneous

In 1931, he became the first foreign President of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. In 1948, he was elected Chancellor of Cambridge University, becoming the first foreigner to hold that position. He held the position until his death. He is remembered also for the coining of the terms holism and holistic: abstractions not unnaturally linked to his political concerns. The earliest recorded use of the word apartheid is also attributed to him, from a 1917 speech. Smuts was an amateur botanist, ...

De Beers: Encyclopedia II - Nathan Mayer Rothschild 1st Baron Rothschild - Baron and first Jewish member of House of Lords

In 1876 he succeeded to the baronetcy created for his uncle Anthony Rothschild (1810–1876), who had died without a male heir. De Beers: Encyclopedia II - Coronation Crown of George IV - Design

The crown, as finally made, followed closely the standard shape and design of English and British crowns. It contained four half-arches, each joined to the band with a cross pattee into which diamonds were set. The four half-arches met together at a jewelled monde, on top of which a cross sat. Like the State Crown of George I, but unlike St. Edward's Crown, the four half-arches were pulled upright rather than allowed to curve downwards at the monde. The gold and silver crown frame was designed by Philip Liebart of Rundell, Bridge and ...

De Beers: Encyclopedia II - Diamond - Natural history

Diamond - Formation. Diamond is formed by prolonged exposure of carbon bearing materials to high pressure and temperature. On Earth, the formation of diamonds is possible because there are regions deep within the Earth that are at a high enough pressure and temperature that the formation of diamonds is thermodynamically favorable (see the diamond phase diagram and geotherms here). Under continental crust, diamonds form starting at depths of about 150 kilometers (90 miles), where pressure is roughly 5 gigapascals ...

De Beers: Encyclopedia II - Jan Smuts/Climbing the Ladder - Starting Afresh

Jan Smuts/Climbing the Ladder - To Johannesburg. Afrikaners in the republics and the Cape Colony were outraged, including Smuts and the Afrikaner Bond. But, whereas Hofmeyr and the Bond could simply censure Rhodes and take a new stance, Smuts could do nothing to ease the shame or repair his reputation and tattered career. He had hero-worshipped Rhodes, was in his employment, and had spoken openly of Rhodes' good nature. He slipped away from Cape life, back to Riebeek West and the family farm. The years had still ...

De Beers: Encyclopedia II - Diamond - Material properties

See also: Crystallographic defects in diamond Diamond is a transparent crystal of pure carbon consisting of tetrahedrally bonded carbon atoms. Humans have been able to adapt diamonds for many uses because of the material's exceptional physical characteristics. Most notable among these properties are the extreme hardness of diamond, its high dispersion index, and high thermal conductivity. These properties form t ...

De Beers: Encyclopedia II - Material properties of diamond - Thermal properties

Unlike most electrical insulators, diamond is a good conductor of heat because of the strong covalent bonding within the crystal. Most natural blue diamonds contain boron atoms which replace carbon atoms in the crystal matrix, and also have high thermal conductance. Specially purified synthetic diamond has the highest thermal conductivity (2000–2500 W/(m·K), five times more than copper) of any known solid at room temperature. Because diamond has such high thermal conductance it is already used in semiconductor manufacture to ...

De Beers: Encyclopedia II - Jan Smuts - The Boer War

For more details on Smuts' involvement, see the in-depth article On October 11, 1899, the Boer republics declared war on the United Kingdom. In the early stages of the conflict, Smuts served as Kruger’s eyes and ears, handling propaganda, logistics, communication with generals and diplomats, and anything else that was required. As the war turned against the Afrikaners, Smuts organised the successful retreat from Pretoria. The British offered the Afrikaners the olive branch of peace, but Smuts refused to negotiate whilst there was still hope. He restructured the surviving Afrikane ...

De Beers: Encyclopedia II - Jan Smuts - Climbing the Ladder

For more details, see the in-depth article Smuts began to practise law in Cape Town, but his abrasive nature made him few friends. Finding little financial success in the law, he began to divert more and more of his time to politics and journalism, writing for the Cape Times. Smuts was intrigued by the prospect of a united South Africa, and joined the Afrikaner Bond. By good fortune, Smuts’ father knew the leader of the group, Jan Hofmeyr, who recommended Jan to Cecil Rhodes, who owned the De Beers mining company. In 1895, Rh ...

De Beers: Encyclopedia II - Yellowknife Northwest Territories - Community profile

According to the Canada 2001 Census: "The Government of the NWT has expressed significant concerns about coverage related to the 2001 census and completed its own population survey[2] to assess the level of undercoverage in the 2001 census. Since it appears that about 10% of the population may have been missed in the 2001 census, results from this census should be used with caution. In particular, analysis of absolute values with previous census years should be avoided". Populations estimates for Yellowknife from the NWT Burea ...

For more details, see the in-depth article Born into a land-owning Afrikaner family on a farm near Malmesbury, in the Cape Colony, Jan Smuts was a quiet and pale child. He was disliked by his father for his sickly manner, and his refusal to follow his forebears into farming. He first attended school at the age of 12, in Riebeeck West, where he fell in love with books, and taught himself English. Excelling in his studies, he moved to Victoria Colle ...

De Beers: Encyclopedia II - Jan Smuts - Under the British Crown

For more details, see the in-depth article For all Smuts' exploits as a general and a negotiator, nothing could mask the fact that the Afrikaners had been defeated and humiliated. Baron Milner had full control of all South African affairs, and established an infamous Anglophone elite, known as Milner's Kindergarten. As an Afrikaner, Smuts was excluded. Defeated but not deterred, in January 1905, he decided to join with the other former Transvaal generals to form a political party, the People's Party (Het Volk) to fight for the Afrikaner c ...

De Beers: Encyclopedia II - Material properties of diamond - Optical properties

The luster of a diamond is described as adamantine, which simply means diamond-like. It is the highest luster possible bar that of metal (metallic), and is due to diamond's superlative hardness. Reflections on a properly cut diamond's facets are undistorted, due to their flatness. The refractive index of diamond (as measuried via sodium light, 589.3 nm) is 2.417; because it is cubic in structure, diamond is also isotropic. Its high dispersion of 0.044 (B-G interval) manifests in the perceptible fire of cut diamonds. This ...

De Beers: Encyclopedia II - Jan Smuts - After the War

His preoccupation with the war had severe political repercussions in South Africa. Smuts' support of the war and his support for the Fagan Commission made him unpopular amongst the Afrikaner and Daniel François Malan's pro-Apartheid stance won the National Party the 1948 election. Although widely forecast, it is a credit to Smuts' political acumen that he was only narrowly defeated (and, in fact, won the popular vote). Smuts retired from politics, and four decades of Apartheid followed. He died on September 11, 1950 on his family farm of Doornkloof, Irene, near Pretoria, South Africa at the age of 80, and his ash ...

De Beers: Encyclopedia II - Jan Smuts - Second World War

After nine years in opposition and academia, Smuts returned as Deputy Prime Minister in a 'grand coalition' government under Barry Hertzog. When Hertzog advocated neutrality towards Nazi Germany in 1939, he was deposed by a party caucus, and Smuts became Prime Minister for the second time. He had served with Winston Churchill in World War I, and had developed a personal and professional rapport. Smuts was invited to the Imperial War Cabinet in 1939 as the most senior South African in favour of war. In 28 May 1941, Smuts was appointed a Field Marshal of the British Army, becom ...

De Beers: Encyclopedia II - Jan Smuts - Soldier and Statesman

He formed the South African Defence Force, and was instrumental in the conquest of German East Africa. In 1917 he was invited to join the Imperial War Cabinet by David Lloyd George. In 1918, Smuts helped to create a Royal Air Force, independent of the army. Smuts and Botha were key negotiators at the Paris Peace Conference. Both were in favour of reconciliation with Germany and limited reparations. Smuts advocated a powerful League of Nations, which failed to materialise. The Treaty of Versailles gave South Africa a mandate over Namibia, whi ...

De Beers: Encyclopedia II - Synthetic diamond - History

Synthetic diamond was first produced on February 16, 1953 in Stockholm, Sweden by the QUINTUS project of ASEA, Sweden's major electrical manufacturing company using a bulky apparatus designed by Baltzar von Platen and the young engineer Anders Kämpe (1928–1984). Pressure was maintained within the device at an estimated 83,000 atmospheres (8.4 GPa) for an hour. A few small crystals were produced. The discovery was kept secret. A year later, General Electric managed to repeat that feat and published their results in Nature and that result is today the offi ...

De Beers: Encyclopedia II - Bernt Carlsson - Reclaiming Namibia for the UN

Following the Reagan/Gorbachev summit on September 29, 1988, implementation of Security Council resolution 435 began. South Africa was thereby required finally to relinquish its control of Namibia. The UN Commissioner planned to fly direct from Brussels on December 20, 1988 (where Carlsson had a long-standing speaking engagement before a sub-committee of the European parliament) to New York for a signing ceremony on December 22 at UN headquarters. Carlsson would then take control of Namibia. But, according to Swedish newspaper iDAG of ...
