Garkbit is a waiter at Milliways, also known as "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe". He has quite likely been employed there for some time, since he is unfazed by Arthur, Ford, Zaphod, and Trillian's confusion as to their location after their abrupt arrival at Milliways, and his casual statement that the Universe "will explode later for your pleasure".
