Darwin on Trial (ISBN 0830813241) is a controversial 1991 book by the University of California, Berkeley law professor Phillip E. Johnson. A neo-creationist polemic, Darwin on Trial is considered to be part of the central canon of the intelligent design movement, of which Johnson is considered "the father." Johnson, begins by recounting Edwards v. Aguillard, a US Supreme Court case regarding a Louisiana law requiring the teaching of "creation-science"; the law was ruled an "establishment of religion". While not an advocate of creation-science, Johnson states that an associated amicus curiae brief by the National Academy of Sciences improperly "defined 'science' in such a way that [it was impossible to] dispute the claims of the scientific establishment" and a rule it proposed against "negative argumentation [eliminated] the possibility t ...

Darwin on Trial: Encyclopedia II - Discovery Institute - History

The Discovery Institute was founded in 1990 by Bruce Chapman, George Gilder, and Stephen C. Meyer as a non-profit educational foundation and think tank based upon the Christian apologetics of C.S. Lewis. It was founded as a branch of the Hudson Institute, an Indianapolis-based, conservative think tank. It is named for the H.M.S. Discovery, which explored Puget Sound in 1792. The institutes's founder and president, Bruce Chapman, co-authored a 1966 critique of Barry M. Goldwater's anti-civil-rights campaign, "The Party That Lost ...

Darwin on Trial: Encyclopedia II - Teach the Controversy - Criticisms

Teach the Controversy - Teach the Controversy. The theory of evolution is accepted by the vast majority of biologists and by the scientific community in general. Such controversies as do exist concern the details of the mechanisms of evolution, not the validity of the over-arching theory of evolution. For example the National Association of Biology Teachers in a statement endorsing evolution as noncontroversial quoted Theodosius Dobzhansky "Nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution." ...

Darwin on Trial: Encyclopedia II - Discovery Institute - Criticisms of the institute

At the foundation of most criticism of the Discovery Institute is the charge that the institute and its Center for Science and Culture intentionally misrepresent or omit many important facts in promoting their agenda. Intellectual dishonesty, in the form of misleading impressions created by the use of rhetoric, intentional ambiguity, and misrepresented evidence, form the foundation of most of the criticisms of the institute. It is alleged that its goal is to lead an unwary public to reach certain conclusions, and that many have been deceived ...

Darwin on Trial: Encyclopedia II - Discovery Institute - Discovery Institute causes

The Discovery Institute through the Center for Science and Culture has been advancing the agenda set forth in its mission statements in both the political and social spheres. That agenda includes the intelligent design movement; transportation in the American and Canadian northwest (Cascadia); a bioethics program opposed to assisted suicide, euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research, human genetic manipulation, human cloning, and the animal rights movement. Its economics and legal programs advocate tort reform, lower taxation, and reduced eco ...

The institute is a non-profit educational foundation funded by philanthropic foundation grants, corporate and individual contributions and the dues of Institute members. Contributions made to it are tax deductible, as provided by law. The institute does not provide details about its backers, out of "harassment" fears according to Chapman. A review of tax documents on www.guidestar.org [7], a Web site that collects data on foundations, showed grants and gifts totalling $4.1 million in 2003, the most recent year available. Darwin on Trial: Encyclopedia II - Teach the Controversy - Strategy

The Discovery Institute or constituent groups acting on its behalf lobby state and local boards of education and local, state and federal policymakers directly to enact policies and laws and propose classroom curricula that feature ID prominently. The Discovery Institute's Teach the Controversy campaign's strategy has been centered around attempts at the local and state level to undermine or remove altogether evolutionary theory from the public school science classroom by portraying it as "controversial" and "in crisis"; to having the ...

Darwin on Trial: Encyclopedia II - Teach the Controversy - Political action

The Discovery Institute aggressively promotes its Teach the Controversy campaign and intelligent design to the public, education officials and public policymakers. Its efforts are largely aimed at conservative Christian policymakers, where it is cast as a counterbalance to the liberal influences of "atheistic scientists" and "Dogmatic Darwinists." As a measure of their success in this effort, on 1 August 2005, during a round-table interview with reporters from five Texas newspapers, President Bush said that he believes schools should discuss ...

Teach the Controversy - Intelligent design movement. The Intelligent Design movement began in the early 1990s and is an organized campaign promoting a religious agenda calling for broad social, academic and political changes centering around intelligent design in the public sphere, primarily in the United States. • Darwin on Trial: Encyclopedia II - Intelligent design - Intelligent design debate

Intelligent design's opponents argue that among scientists, there is no debate about whether life evolved. A key strategy of the intelligent design movement is in convincing the general public that there is such a debate, and convincing the public, politicians, and cultural leaders that schools should "teach the controversy."[36] The intelligent design debate centers on three issues: Whether the definition of science is broad enough t ...

Darwin on Trial: Encyclopedia II - History of creationism - Renaissance to Darwin

The Renaissance starting in the 14th century saw the establishment of protoscience that eventually would lead to the development of modern science through the Scientific revolution. This was a period of great social change. European colonization of the Americas was driven by people fleeing from religious persecution. The later Enlightenment (beginning in the 17th century) saw improvements in communications and economics (see Industrial Revolution) lead to advances in science and improved education. In the United States, due to the Establishment Clause, no church was given government sanction, so Christianity evo ...

Darwin on Trial: Encyclopedia II - Intelligent design movement - Intelligent design as a movement

The movement was nominally launched by Phillip E. Johnson's book Darwin on Trial in 1991. The intelligent design movement began to take its present shape and course in 1996 with the forming of the Discovery Institute's Center for the Renewal of Science and Culture (CRSC), now known as the "Center for Science and Culture" (CSC). Johnson, a law professor whose religious conversion catalyzed his anti-evolution efforts, assembled a group of like-minded supporters who promote intelligent design through their writings, financed by CSC fello ...
