Dark: Encyclopedia - Darkness

Darkness is the absence of light, although earlier in history it was sometimes viewed as a substance in its own right, and appears in this form in some fantasy literature, such as Terry Pratchett's Discworld. Another name for darkness in this context is shadow. As a metaphor, it is also the lack of knowledge (ignorance). It is also associated with mystery and with unknown things. In Western tradition, darkness is also associated with evil, evil entities (such as demons or Satan), and Hell or, especially in Egyptian mythology, t

Dark: Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Dark, Darkness

Dark, Darkness

1. The ancients found the darkness a source of great fear, and so dreaming of darkness could be calling your attention to a fear you have that needs to be dealt with.

2. Darkness also hides one’s surroundings, and so darkness in a dream could indicate that you are “in the dark” about something, and need to find the truth. If you walk through the darkness into the light, this is showing you that you will indeed find the truth, and success will come your way.

3. If a storm causes a bright day to suddenly turn into darkness, this is a warning not to get too complacent with your present circumstances, and to save for “a rainy day.”

Dark: Encyclopedia - Dark nebula

A dark nebula is a large cloud which appears as star-poor regions where the dust of interstellar medium seems to be concentrated. Dark nebulae can be seen if they obscure part of an emission or reflection nebula (eg. the Horsehead Nebula) or if they block out background stars (eg. the Coalsack Nebula). The form of such dark clouds is very irregular: they have no clearly defined outer boundaries and sometimes take on convoluted serpentine shapes. The largest dark nebulae are visible to the naked eye, appearing as dark patches ...

Dark: Encyclopedia - Dark star

A dark star is a theoretical object that obeys the laws of Newtonian mechanics, and has a surface escape velocity that equals or exceeds the speed of light. Light emitted at the surface of a dark star is usually trapped by the star’s gravity, hence the name. Einstein’s “gravitational” general theory of relativity incorporated some modifications to Newtonian relationships introduced by the special theory of relativity, and as a result the physics of these objects is different: according to general relativity, and later a ...

Dark: Encyclopedia - Dark matter

edit In cosmology, dark matter refers to hypothetical matter particles, of unknown composition, that do not emit or reflect enough electromagnetic radiation to be detected directly, but whose presence can be inferred from gravitational effects on visible matter such as stars and galaxies. The dark matter hypothesis aims to explain several anomalous astronomical observations, such as anomalies in the rotational speed of galaxies (the galaxy rotation problem). Estimates of the amount of matter present in galaxies, ...

Dark: Encyclopedia - Dark energy

edit In cosmology, dark energy is a hypothetical form of energy which permeates all of space and has strong negative pressure. According to the theory of relativity, the effect of such a negative pressure is qualitatively similar to a force acting in opposition to gravity at large scales. Invoking such an effect is currently the most popular method for explaining the observations of an accelerating universe as well as accounting for a significant portion of the missing mass in the universe.
