Dance: Spiritual - Theosophy Dictionary on Rasa

Rasa (Sanskrit) [from the verbal root ras musical sound]

The mystery-dance performed by Krishna and the gopis, in which Krishna remains in the center while the shepherdesses revolve about him. This dance is still celebrated in a yearly festival, especially in Rajastan. It represents, astronomically, the circling of the planets around the sun, as did other circle dances, e.g., the dance of the Amazons around the priapic image, the dance of the daughters of Shiloah (Judges 21), and the dance of David around the ark (IU 2:45).

In rasa we see the same general connection which the Pythagoreans referred to when they spoke of the music of the spheres, or again that a celestial body in following its path does so to the accompaniment of natural sound or music which the motion evokes. The rasa dance signifies stately, quiet, but continuous movement of the bodies of those participating around another in the center who represents the sun, while those dancing around him in various orbits or circles represent the planets.

Such dances were representative of the life in nature moving in circular or spiral ways to the accompaniment of sound or music, the roots of such movements being found in the akasa, sound itself being the distinguishing characteristic of akasa according to ancient correspondences.

Dance: Hindu - Hinduism Dictionary on Nataraja

Nataraja: (Sanskrit) "King of Dance," or "King of Dancers."

God as the Cosmic Dancer. Perhaps Hinduism's richest and most eloquent symbol, Nataraja represents Siva, the Primal Soul, Parameshvara, as the power, energy and life of all that exists. This is Siva's intricate state of Being in Manifestation. The dance of Siva as Natesha, Lord of Dancers, is the dance of the entire cosmos, the rhythmic movements in all. All that is, whether sentient or insentient, pulsates in His body.

Dance: Alternative Health Dictionary on Bodymind Centering

Body mind Centering (Bodymind Centering technique): Form of meditation developed by married couple Gay Hendricks, Ph.D., a university professor, and Kathlyn Hendricks, Ph.D., a dance therapist. In Radiance! Breathwork, Movement and Body-Centered Psychotherapy (Wingbow Press, 1991), they defined it as a precise, step-by-step technique for solving life problems through contact with the Inner Self. They defined Inner Self as the part of us that knows how we really feel. Bodymind Centering reconnects the Inner Self and the Outer Self.

Ballet is the name given to a specific dance form and technique. Works of dance choreographed using this technique are called ballets, and may include: dance, mime, acting and music (orchestral and sung). Ballets can be performed alone or as part of an opera. Ballet is best known for its virtuoso techniques such as pointe work, grand pas de deux and high leg extensions. Many ballet techniques bear a striking similarity to fencing positions and footwork, perhaps due to their development during the same periods of history, but more probably, because both arts had similar r ...

The leader has to communicate the direction of the movement to the follower. As, traditionally, the right hand of the man is on the natural bra line of the woman's back, this is the strongest part of her back and is the safest place for the man's hand to be, and he can easily pull her body towards him. To communicate a step forward (backward for the girl) the woman has to constantly put a little weight against the right hand of the man. When the man goes forward, and so does the hand on her shoul ...
