Dalarna: Encyclopedia II - Dukes of Swedish provinces - History

In medieval times, when a king had more than one son, the younger sons were sometimes given a duchy to rule over as a fief. Feuds between the king and his ducal brothers were common, and sometimes ended in cold-hearted murder. Just before his death in 1560, King Gustav I continued this tradition by making his sons John, Magnus and Charles powerful dukes, together ruling as much of the country as their older brother King Eric XIV. The geography of these duchies was somewhat unclear as they were not generally identical to one or more pr ...

Dalarna: Encyclopedia II - Svealand - History

Svealand was the original Sweden, to which it gave its name. This is supported by linguistics and is based on early medieval sources, such as the sagas. In Old Norse and in Old English, Svealand and Sweden are synonymous, and described as a separate country from Götaland/Gautland/Geatland. In Sögubrot af Nokkrum[2] for instance, Kolmården between Svealand and Östergötland is described as the border between Sweden and Östergötland (...Kolmerkr, er skilr Svíþjóð ok Eystra-Gautland...), and in Hervarar saga[3], king Ing ...

In Scandinavia, the sæter/seter (Norwegian) or Säter (Swedish) (from old Norse setr) is a common mountain or forest pasture used in the summer for transhumance. Dalarna: Encyclopedia II - Swedish language - History

In the 9th century, Old Norse began to diverge into Old West Norse (Norway and Iceland) and Old East Norse (Sweden and Denmark). In the 12th century, the dialects of Denmark and Sweden began to diverge, becoming Old Danish and Old Swedish in the 13th century. All were heavily influenced by Middle Low German during the medieval period. Though stages of language development are never as sharply delimited as implied here, and should not be taken too literally, the system of subdivisions used in this article is the most commonly used by Swedish linguists and is used for the sake of practicality. Dalarna: Encyclopedia II - Härjedalen - History

Jämtland and Härjedalen were originally provinces of Norway, but in early 1645 they were both ceded by Denmark (who held Norway at the time) to Sweden by the Treaty of Brömsebro. The province of Härjedalen is named after a powerful Norseman who had to flee east from the Norwegian court of king Halfdan Svartes after killing one of the king's men (with a horn). Thereafter he was known as "Härjulf Hornbrytaren." For a time he entered the service of the Svea (Swedish today) king Anund, until he eloped with that king's sister, Helga, and tog ...
