Daily Sacrifice in Hinduism: Desire for Reward

Hindu Quotes: Desire for Reward

Among the wise, some say that all action should be renounced as evil. Others say that certain kinds of action--self-sacrifice, giving, and self-discipline--should be continued...

Self-sacrifice, giving, and self-discipline should not be renounced, for they purify the thoughtful. Yet even these, Arjuna, should be performed without desire for selfish rewards. This is essential.

Daily Sacrifice in Hinduism: Be Freed From the Bondage of Karma

Hindu Quotes: Be Freed From the Bondage of Karma

Whatever I am offered in devotion with a pure heart--a leaf, a flower, fruit, or water--I partake of that love offering. Whatever you do, make it an offering to me--the food you eat, the sacrifices you make, the help you give, even your suffering. In this way you will be freed from the bondage of karma, and from its results both pleasant and painful. Then, firm in renunciation and yoga, with your heart free, you will come to me.

- Bhagavad Gita 9:26-28

Daily Sacrifice in Hinduism: Penance and Faith in the Forest

Hindu Quotes: Penance and Faith in the Forest

Children, when they have long lived in ignorance, consider themselves happy. Because those who depend on their good works are, owing to their passions, improvident, they fall and become miserable when their life (in the world which they had gained by their good works) is finished.

Considering sacrifice and good works as the best, these fools know no higher good, and having enjoyed (their reward) on the height of heaven, gained by good works, they enter again this world or a lower one.

But those who practice penance and faith in the forest, tranquil, wise, and living on alms, depart free from passion through the sun to where that immortal Person dwells whose nature is imperishable.

- Mundaka Upanishad

Daily Sacrifice in Hinduism: Hindu view on Polygamy

Hinduism and Polygamy: Hindu view on Polygamy

Polygamy and polyandry were prevalent In ancient India, but it is doubtful whether they were ever popular in the public opinion. It was practiced mostly by the warrior castes and rich merchants. Many Hindu gods are also depicted as polygamous, with two or more wives. The goddesses are not actually wives in the physical sense but pure universal energies who assist their gods to maintain dharma (good order) in the universe. They do not possess physical bodies, though they can appear in human form if they want to. Present day Hindus consider both polygamy and polyandry primitive and archaic, remnants of an old society that still haunt the lives of a few unfortunate victims. In India Hindus acknowledge polygamy as both illegal and immoral.

Daily Sacrifice in Hinduism: Climb Every Mountain, Search High and Low

For the achievers, the need to dream beyond what is possible, passion for the job, enthusiasm and sense of purpose are the prime tasks. The mental attitude to set clear goals, patience and perseverance even when the results are not visible, and the ability to take failure in one's stride sets these men and women apart. Positive thinking is critical.

Heavenly life is as desirable or undesirable as earthly life because in the ultimate sense, heavenly life is also limited and transient, thought compared to earthly life it may be longer and more intense. True liberation means liberation of the individual soul from the cycle of births and deaths, from the sense of duality and separation, and union with Brahman, the Supreme Soul.

Daily Sacrifice in Hinduism: A Few Bigots Hold Many to Ransom

It is paradoxical that while prophets and sages of all religions preached love, priests have often preached hatred of those who did not subscribe to their brand of God. Unfortunately, disrespect for another's faith whips up communal passions.

Founders of various religions were simple and humble people. Buddha, Mahavir, Jesus, Prophet Mohammed, Guru Nanak and Krishna all promoted peace and harmony. None exhorted their followers to build temples, churches or mosques - these were created many centuries after the death of the founders.
