daemons: Encyclopedia - Greek mythology

Greek mythology comprises the collected narratives of Greek gods, goddesses, heroes, and heroines, originally created and spread within an oral-poetic tradition. Our surviving sources of mythology are literary reworkings of this oral tradition, supplemented by interpretations of iconic imagery, sometimes modern ones, sometimes ancient ones, as myth was a means for later Greeks themselves to throw light on cult practices and traditions that were no longer explicable. The historian must sometimes deduce from hints in imagery, such as in ...

daemons: Encyclopedia - Coalition

A coalition is an alliance between entities, during which they cooperate in joint action, each in their own self-interest. This alliance may be temporary or a matter of convenience. A coalition thus differs from a more formal covenant. Coalition - Politics and government. A coalition government, in a parliamentary system, is a government composed of a coalition of parties. In Australia, the Coalition is also used to refer to an alliance of three parties (the Liberals, Nationals and Country Liberals) existin ...

daemons: Encyclopedia - Oneiroi

In Greek mythology, the Oneiroi were the sons of Hypnos, the god of sleep. They were personifications of dreams—black-winged daemons—and they were said to live on the shores of the Ocean in the far West, in a cavern near the border of Hades. The gods sent dreams to mortals from one of two gates located there: true dreams emerged from a gate made of horn, whereas false dreams threaded their way from a gate fashioned of ivory. The most powerful of the Oneiroi was Morpheus, and his brot ...

daemons: Encyclopedia II - Privilege Computing - Unix

On Unix-like systems, the Superuser (commonly known as 'root') is user that owns all the privileges. These systems do not follow the principle of least privilege; users are granted only enough permissions to accomplish their most common tasks. Unprivileged users usually cannot: Adjust kernel options. Modify system files, or files of other users. Change the owner of any files. Reboot or halt the system, although it is becoming common on GNU/Linux to allow regular users to do this.

daemons: Encyclopedia II - TELNET - Security

There are three main problems with TELNET, making it a bad choice for modern systems from the point of view of computer security: Commonly used TELNET daemons have several vulnerabilities discovered over the years, and probably several more still exist. TELNET, by default, does not encrypt any data sent over the connection (including passwords), and so it is trivial to eavesdrop on the communications and use the password later for malicious purposes. TELNET lacks an authentication scheme that makes it possible to ensure that communication is carried out between the two desired hosts, and no ...

daemons: Encyclopedia II - Service Location Protocol - Logical overview

SLP is used by devices to announce services on a local network. Each service must have a URL that is used to locate the service. Additionally it may have an unlimited number of name/value pairs, called attributes. Each device must always be in one or more scopes. Scopes are simple strings and are used to group services, comparable to the network neighbourhood in other systems. A device can not see services that are in different scopes. For example, when a person surfs for an item on eBay, at the bottom of the page there is a list of similar products that other customers who did the same search looked at. This is because it is assumed the user tastes are relatively similar and they will be interested in the same products. This technology is known as collaborative filtering. Softw ...

Emperor's Children - Fulgrim. The Legion's history begins with the descent of the Primarch-child Fulgrim to the resource-poor world of Chemos. Dependant on interstellar trade for food, and cut off from the rest of the galaxy by ferocious warp storms, strict rationing and improvisation could not prevent the slow death of the people of Chemos. When the capsule containing the infant Fulgrim plummeted to the planet, the scouts who recovered the child pleaded with the leaders of the settlement of Callax to spare the child's life, as orphans were seen as a strain on already ...

daemons: Encyclopedia II - FreeBSD Jail - Goals

FreeBSD jails mainly aim at three goals : Virtualization : Each jail is a virtual machine running on the host machine with its own files processes, user and superuser accounts. From within a jailed process, the environment is (almost) indistinguishable from a real system. Security : Each jail is sealed from the others thus providing an additional level of security. Easy delegation : Thanks to the limited scope of a jail, it allows administrators to painlessly delegate several tasks which require superuser access without handing out co ...

daemons: Encyclopedia II - Blood Angels - Organisation

The Blood Angels and their successors adhere to the Codex Astartes in general, but deviate in several regards. The most obvious of these is the preponderance of close-combat troops. The role of Assault Marine is heavily sought, and the entire First Company fights as assault troops when not deployed as Terminators. The entire Eighth Company is tooled towards assault combat; the Marines that do not gain access to Jump Packs before a battle often deploy in support of their rapid moving brethren, throu ...

daemons: Encyclopedia II - GNU Hurd - Architecture

Unlike Unix-like kernels, the Hurd builds on top of a microkernel which is responsible for providing the most basic kernel services – coordinating access to the hardware: the CPU (through multiprocessing), RAM (via memory management), and other various devices for sound, graphics, mass storage, etc. Currently GNU Mach is used as the microkernel, but efforts are underway to port the Hurd to the more modern L4 microkernel. Currently, it is being discussed whether or not L4 is actually suitable at all, there may be a switch or port to yet another microkernel. There is speculation about Coyotos (EROS ...
