Cycle Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - House mouse - Life cycle and reproduction

Female house mice have an estrous cycle that is 4-6 days long, with estrus itself lasting less than a day. If several females are held together under crowded conditions, they will often not have an estrus at all; if they are then exposed to male urine, they will become estrous after 72 hours. Male house mice court females by emitting characteristic ultrasonic calls in the 30kHz - 110kHz range. The calls are most frequent during courtship when the male is sniffing and following the female. However, the calls continue after mating has b ...

Cycle Dictionary: A Kondh's Love for Life and Dharani

The hill-stream gurgled along impatiently. The old Kondh tribal sat by the stream, both feet dipped into its cold waters. The blue smoke from the homemade pipe he was smoking merged with the blue haze slowly descending from the Niyamgiri hill. Soon he was playing a wistful tune on a slender flute. The music drew me to him and we started talking.

He told me how he lost his wife a year ago. "The tiger dragged her away while she was in the forest. I was so unhappy I wanted to die and leave Dharani Ma (Earth Mother). Then deep inside I knew I can't, unless forced, leave this enchanting world even for a day.

Cycle Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Bicycle - History

No single time or person can be identified with the invention of the bicycle. Its earliest known forebears were called velocipedes, and included many types of human-powered vehicles. One of these, the scooter-like dandy horse of the French Comte de Sivrac, dating to 1790, was long cited as the earliest bicycle. Most bicycle historians now believe that these hobby-horses with no steering mechanism probably n ...

Cycle Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Citric acid cycle - Location of cycle and inputs and outputs

The citric acid cycle takes place within the mitochondrial matrix in eukaryotes, and within the cytoplasm in prokaryotes. Fuel molecule catabolism (including glycolysis) produces acetyl-CoA, a two-carbon acetyl group bound to coenzyme A. Acetyl-CoA is the main input to the citric acid cycle. Citrate is both the first and the last product of the cycle (Fig 1), and is regenerated by the condensation of oxaloacetate and acetyl-CoA. The sum of all reactions in the citric acid cycle is: Acetyl-CoA + 3 NAD+ + ...

Cycle Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - America's Next Top Model - Cycle 4

For the fourth cycle, which ran in spring 2005, the shooting location was moved from New York City to Los Angeles. One of the most memorable contestants in season four was Tiffany Richardson, who had initially been a semifinalist in cycle three but had failed to make the final round, stemming from a fight she had been involved in with a woman who poured beer on her weave in a bar. She was accepted as a finalist for cycle four as she displayed a calmer and more mature attitude, though her pessimistic outlook soon caused her to be ouste ...

The Bogong moth Agrotis infusa is common throughout southern Australia. These brown to blackish moths have a wingspan of approximately 45 millimetres. Adults make lengthy migrations to spend summer months in large congregations in caves and crevices of rocks in the Australian Alps notably to the region of Mount Bogong and the Bogong High Plains in Victoria. Cycle Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Cardiac cycle - Complete cardiac diastole

Cardiac Diastole is the period of time when the heart relaxes after contraction in preparation for refilling with circulating blood. Ventricular diastole is when the ventricles are relaxing, while atrial diastole is when the atria are relaxing. Together they are known as complete cardiac diastole. During ventricular diastole, the pressure in the (left and right) ventricles drops from the peak that it reaches in systole. When the pressure in the left ventricle drops to below the pressure in the left atrium, ...
