A red-brick clock-tower dominates the north end of Crouch End Broadway. Crouch End: Encyclopedia II - Finsbury Park station - London Underground

The station is served by the Piccadilly and Victoria lines. Although thought of as a 'deep-level' tube station, Finsbury Park has neither lifts nor escalators as its lines are less than 20' (6.1 m) below street level. The access to the Piccadilly and Victoria line platforms is by staircase only, reached via two narrow passages that probably exclude the installation of automatic ticket barriers - remarkable, considering its Zone 2 location. Manual ticket inspections do, however, occasionally take place. See also:

Arsenal were founded as Dial Square in 1886 by workers at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich, but were renamed to Royal Arsenal shortly afterwards. They renamed themselves again to Woolwich Arsenal after turning professional in 1891. The club were then known by fans as the Woolwich Reds, although they played their games in nearby Plumstead. Woolwich Arsenal entered the Football League in 1893, becoming the first southern team to do so. The club started out in the Second Division, and won promotion to the First D ...

Crouch End: Encyclopedia II - Gillian Anderson - Early life

She was born in Chicago to Edward and Rosemary Anderson; soon after her birth her family moved to Puerto Rico for fifteen months and then to Crouch End in London. When she was eleven, her family moved again, this time to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she attended City Middle/High School, a program for gifted students with a strong emphasis on the humanities. With her English accent and background, she felt out of place in the American Midwest, and developed a reputation as a strong-willed and rebellious teenager. She had her nose pierced in the early 1980s, dyed her hair various colors, and was once arre ...

Crouch End: Encyclopedia II - Finsbury Park - The park

The large public park which gives the area its name was one of the first of the great London parks that appeared in Victorian times. It was designed in the 1850s but was not actually completed until a little while later, in 1869. The park's name is explained by the fact that it was designed for the recreational use of the people of Finsbury, which at that time was a large London borough stretching from east central London all the way to the new park's southern boundary. Today, most of Finsbury has been swallowed up by the borough of Islington, but the con ...

Crouch End: Encyclopedia II - Muswell Hill - Local History

The earliest records of Muswell Hill date from the 12th Century. At this time the Bishop of London, who was the Lord of the Manor of Hornsey, owned the area and granted 65 acres (263,000 m²), located to the east of Colney Hatch Lane, to a newly formed order of Nuns. The Nuns built a chapel on the site and called it ‘Our Ladie of Muswell’. The name Muswell is believed to stem from a natural spring or well, which was said to have miraculous properties. The story has it that a Scottish King was cured of disease after drinking the water of the spring/well and that this led to the area becomin ...

Crouch End: Encyclopedia II - Highgate tube station - Wartime and after - Postponement & cancellation

Because of the war the full plan for the reconstruction of the station designed by Charles Holden was not completed and parts for escalators intended for Highgate were used in central London stations. Works to electricify the LNER tracks from Finsbury Park, through Highgate to East Finchley and on the Alexandra Palace branch had been well advanced when war started but were postponed. Crouch End: Encyclopedia II - Arsenal F.C. - Stadium

Arsenal Stadium, widely referred to as Highbury, has been Arsenal's home since the club's move to North London in 1913. The original stadium was built by the renowned football architect Archibald Leitch, and had a design common to many football grounds in the UK at the time, with a single covered stand and three open-air banks of terracing. In the 1930s, the entire stadium was given a massive overhaul, with new Art Deco East and West stands constructed, and roofs added to the North Bank and Clock End terraces. At its peak, Highbury could hol ...

Crouch End: Encyclopedia II - Arsenal F.C. - Supporters

Arsenal have a large and generally loyal fanbase, with virtually all home matches selling out. Arsenal fans often refer to themselves as "Gooners", the name being derived from the team's nickname, "The Gunners". The club's location, adjoining both wealthy areas such as Crouch End and Hampstead, mixed areas such as Islington and Highbury, and working-class suburbs such as Holloway, Finsbury Park and Stoke Newington has meant that Arsenal's supporters have come from across the usual class divides. Arsenal have the highest proportion (7.7%) of ...

Crouch End: Encyclopedia II - Arsenal F.C. - Ownership

Arsenal's parent company, Arsenal Holdings, operates as a public limited company. However, Arsenal's ownership is considerably different from that of other football clubs. Only 62,000 shares in Arsenal have been issued, and they are not traded on a public exchange such as the FTSE or AIM; instead, they are traded infrequently on OFEX, a specialist market. As of December 2005, Arsenal's market capitalization value is £290m, and the club made a pre-tax profit of £19.3m in the 2004-05 financial year.See also:

Crouch End: Encyclopedia II - Muswell Hill - The 'Gaudi Style' shop front

This shop front was built in July 2004 by Chris Ostwald as a homage to Spanish Architect Antoni Gaudi. The shop, a new art gallery and art materials shop on the northern arm of Muswell Hill Broadway, has had an enforcement notice served by Haringey Council, to force its demolition, as the front was built without planning permission. The shop front is now a hotly debated local issue. A compromise seems to have been reached in the the Council issuing guidelines for modification to the front. The matter is still currently under discussion. Nearest places: Wood Green HornseySee also:

Crouch End: Encyclopedia II - Arsenal F.C. - Crest

Royal Arsenal's first crest, unveiled in 1888, featured three cannon viewed from above, pointing northwards, similar to the crest of the Borough of Woolwich. These can sometimes be mistaken for chimneys, but the presence of a carved lion's head and a cascabel on each are clear indicators that they are cannon. In 1922, the club adopted its first single-cannon crest, featuring an eastward-pointing cannon. This crest was only used until 1925 when the cannon was reversed to point westward, its barrel was slimmed down and the club's nickname, ...
