The town was incorporated on April 1, 1879 as "Queen City." By the end of that year the town boasted a jail, graded streets, and a few plank sidewalks. Soon, it was decided that the town needed a new name. Two factions emerged that supported two different names. One group wished to honor the town's first mayor, Captain Ellerey C. Davis, by renaming "Queen City" to "Davis." Another group picked the name "Crookston" to honor Colonel William Crooks, a soldier and railroad builder. The present day nam ...

Govan - Pre-20th Century.
Researchers believe that Govan was the site of one of the earliest Christian settlements in mainland Scotland, dating back to before the 9th century. At that time, the area was part of the Kingdom of Strathclyde, with its capital at Dumbarton on the north side of the river.  |  |  | Crookston: Encyclopedia II - University of Minnesota system - CampusesThe flagship Twin Cities campus is by far the largest in the system, with a total enrollment of 50,954 as of fall 2004. That made it the second-largest campus in the country at the time, behind Ohio State University's main campus in Columbus. Duluth reported 10,366, Crookston had 2,088, and Morris had 1,839 students, bringing the system-wide total to 65,247 for that semester (numbers for Rochester are apparently counted separately).
