Craft: Encyclopedia - Arts and crafts

Arts and crafts comprise a whole host of activities and hobbies that are related to making things with one's own hands and skill. Some crafts have been practised for centuries, while others are modern inventions, or popularisations of crafts which were originally practiced in a very small geographic area. Additionally, this term refers to the Arts and Crafts movement which was a social revolution veiled in a design ...

Craft: Encyclopedia - Arts and Crafts movement

The Arts and Crafts movement was a reformist movement, at first inspired by the writings of John Ruskin, that was at its height between approximately 1880–1910. The movement influenced British decorative arts, architecture, cabinet making, crafts, and even the "cottage" garden designs of William Robinson or Gertrude Jekyll. Its best-known practitioners were William Morris, Charles Robert Ashbee, T. J. Cobden Sanderson, Walter Crane, Phoebe Anna Traquair, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Christopher Dresser, Edwin Lutyens and artists in the Pre-Raphaelite movement. The Arts and Crafts movement was part of the major En ...

Craft: Encyclopedia - Craft beer

Craft beer generally refers to all-malt beer that is brewed with emphasis on quality rather than mass appeal. This term has become widely used in the United States to cover many imported beers, microbrews, and some high-quality domestic beers produced in larger quantities. Ideally craft beers are bottle- or cask-conditioned, and thus naturally carbonated by live yeast that continues to ferment in the container. They generally contain fewer adjuncts than mass-produced beers. In the United Kingdom, the term real ale is often used ...

Craft: Encyclopedia II - Landing craft - Types

The smallest landing craft were the US-designed DUKW, basically an amphibious truck, and the Landing Vehicle Tracked, an amphibious armoured personnel carrier. These were operated by Army personnel, not naval crews. They had a capacity of about 3 tons. Then came the British Landing Craft Assault (LCA) small craft intended to be transported around by larger vessels then lowered into the water off the target beach. Typically they could carry 36 fully-armed soldiers. The US Landing Craft Vehicle/Personnel (LCVP) was more flexible - it could carry 30 ...

Craft: Encyclopedia II - Craft unionism - Challenges to craft unionism

As long as the craft unions were the dominant power in the AFL, they took every step possible to block the organizing of mass production industries. This led to challenges from both inside and outside the Federation. The first challenge came from outside: the Western Federation of Miners, a union that had fought a series of violent battles with mine owners over the right to represent mill workers as well as hard rock miners, joined with activists from other unions and from the Socialist Party of America to form the Industrial Workers ...

Craft: Encyclopedia II - Craft unionism - Origins of craft unionism in the United States

The first unions established in the United States in the early nineteenth century tended, by nature of the industries in which their members worked, to be craft unions: shoemakers, cordwainers (tailors who worked in corduroy) and typesetters all worked, as a rule, in small shops in which they had little contact with workers in other fields. Some of these early unions also came out of a guild tradition, in which skilled workmen often owned their own shops or, if they worked for another, had a good deal of control over how the work was done, w ...

Craft: Encyclopedia II - Craft unionism - Craft unionism in new industries

Workers carried these patterns of organizing into new industries as well. The railroad brotherhoods, the unions formed in the latter half of the nineteenth century, made minute distinctions between groups that worked alongside each other; as an example, more than twenty years passed between the original chartering of the International Brotherhood of Stationary Firemen and the amendment of its charter to permit the union to represent the oilers and helpers who worked with them. Those who saw themselves at the top of the ladder took their elev ...

Craft: Encyclopedia II - Friedel-Crafts reaction - Friedel-Crafts alkylation

Friedel-Crafts alkylation involves the alkylation of an aromatic ring and an alkyl halide using a strong Lewis acid catalyst. With anhydrous aluminium chloride as a catalyst, the alkyl group attaches at the former site of the chloride ion. This reaction has one big disadvantage, namely that the product is more nucleophilic than the reactant due to the electron donating alkyl-chain. Therefore, another hydrogen is substituted with an alkyl-chain, which leads to overalkyation of the molecule. Also, if the chlorine is not on a tertiary ca ...

Smith built his first wooden boat in 1874 when he was 13 years old. He soon began to build more boats and joined his brother Henry in 1881 to to begin producing boats full time. Craft: Encyclopedia II - Harry Craft - Career Overview

An incredibly praised defensive center fielder, Craft was an average hitter in his short career. His best season came, basically, as a rookie (he had 42 at bats the previous season) in 1938. That year, Craft batted a solid .270 as the Reds' everyday center fielder with 15 home runs and 83 RBIs in 151 games. He had 165 hits that season in 612 at bats. All those numbers ended up being career-highs. However, the next two years were Cincinnati's best seasons as they went to the World Series in both, winning in 1940 against the Detroit Tigers. Ho ...

Craft: Encyclopedia II - Personal water craft - Emissions

Before 1990, personal water craft emissions were unregulated in the United States. Many were powered by two-stroke cycle engines, which are smaller and lighter than four-stroke cycle engines but much more polluting. Simple two-stroke engines are lubricated on a "total loss" method, mixing lubricating oil with their fuel; they are estimated to exhaust in excess of 25% of their fuel and oil unburned, in addition to t ...

Craft: Encyclopedia II - Arts and Crafts movement - Origins and key principles

The Arts and Crafts Movement began primarily as a search for authentic and meaningful styles for the 19th century and as a reaction to the eclectic historicism of the Victorian era and to "soulless" machine-made production aided by the Industrial Revolution. Considering the machine to be the root cause of all evils, the protagonists of this movement turned away from the use of machines and towards handcraft, which tended to concentrate their productions in the hands of sensitive but well-heeled patrons. Though the spontaneous personality of ...
