Although the basic structure of all double layers is the same, a variety of different mechanisms have been proposed for their formation, depending on the environment of the plasma (eg. double layers in the laboratory, ionosphere, space plasmas, fusions plasma, etc). For example: 1982: Disruption of a neutral current sheet [10] 1983: Injection of non-neutral electron current into a cold plasma [11] 1985: Increasing the current density in a plasma [12] 1986: In the accretion column of a neutron star [13] ...

The interpretation of the title of the band's first album, Back in the DHSS (1985), requires three items of background information: that the Beatles wrote a song called "Back in the USSR"; that the DHSS was the UK state welfare agency, and that at that time unemployment stood at high levels. "Mention the Lord of the Rings just once more and I'll more than likely kill you" is the first line in the surprisingly emotional 'Dickie Davies' Eyes' (the title of which conflates Kim Carnes' 1980s ode to Bette Davis and legendary ITV spo ...

Cousin chart - Half cousins and double cousins: Encyclopedia II - Double variation - The double variation in Haydn

The double variation begins to appear Haydn's work in the 1770s. Haydn may have been inspired by an earlier example of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, the sixth of that composer's Sonatas with Varied Reprises, (W. 50/6, H. 140), in C minor (1760). Elaine Sisman, an authority on variations (see references below), notes "This set of sonatas was advertised in Vienna several times in the period in which Haydn wrote his first [double] variations." While Haydn's double variations show considerable diversity, there are some general pattern ...

Cousin chart - Half cousins and double cousins: Encyclopedia II - Double Dragon - Adaptations

Due to the popularity of the Double Dragon games, Tradewest lent the brand name to various tie-ins in the US, including adaptions of the game in media outside of the games themselves. Unfortunately, these adaptions strayed from their source material and were very unpopular as a result, with the Lee brothers often depicted as superheroes who inherited their powers from artifacts such as swords or amulets (depending on the adaption) instead of being skilled martial artists like in the games. ...

Cousin chart - Half cousins and double cousins: Encyclopedia II - Double variation - Other senses of the term double variation

Double variation - Distinct variations for repeated sections. Occasionally, authors on music use the term "double variation" in a quite different sense. Cousin chart - Half cousins and double cousins: Oceanography Dictionary - biological half-life

Definition and meaning of biological half-life:

biological half-life - the time required for one-half of the total amount of a particular substance in a biological system to be consumed or broken down by biological processes when the rate of removal is approximately exponential. Toxic chemicals with a long biological half-life will tend to accumulate in the body and are more likely to be harmful. A substance with a short biological half-life may still accumulate if a portion of it it becomes tightly bound to bone or other tissues, even if most of it is quickly eliminated from the body

Cousin chart - Half cousins and double cousins: Encyclopedia II - Xen Half-Life - Ecosystem

The Xen asteroids are home to a wide variety of different plant and animal species, forming a complex ecosystem. Some of these, including barnacles, bullsquid and houndeyes, appear to occupy niches similar to terrestrial animals, albeit with unusual anatomical or physiological features. While the headcrabs that appear in the Black Mesa Research Facility have fully matured, juvenile forms (informally known as "baby headcrabs") appear in Xen. These are produced by another Xen resident, the Gonarch, a towering 6 m-high giant that continuously gives birth to infant headcrabs. Headcrabs appear to be fairly low on the Xen food ...

This choice could be delayed, although not indefinitely. Eärendil would rather have chosen the kindred of Men, but he chose the Elves for his wife Elwing's sake, who chose the Elves. Cousin chart - Half cousins and double cousins: Encyclopedia II - Double decker - Airplane

Many early seaplane airliners, such as the Boeing 314 Clipper and Short Sandringham, had two decks for passengers. Following World War II, a double-decked derivative of the B-29 Superfortress called the Stratocruiser became popular with airlines around the world. For years the most popular – and only – double-deck airliner in service was the Boeing 747, though the top deck is smaller than the main level. The new Airbus A380, however, has two decks ...

Cousin chart - Half cousins and double cousins: Encyclopedia II - Half-Life - Development

Half-Life was the first product for Kirkland, Washington (State)-based developer Valve Software, which was founded in 1996 by former Microsoft employees Mike Harrington and Gabe Newell. They settled on a concept for a scary 3D action game and licensed the Quake engine from Id Software. (Valve eventually modified the engine a great deal, notably adding skeletal animation and Direct3D support.) The company had a difficult time finding a publisher at first, many believing their project ambitious for a studio headed by newcomers to the vi ...
