Cooling: Encyclopedia - Cool
Cool has its roots in Middle English "cole", from Old English "col" and indicates aloofness, composure and absence of excitement in a person, especially in times of stress. The usage of cool as a general positive epithet or interjection has been part of English slang since World War II, and has been incorporated into other languages, such as French and German. Use of the term in this manner has its origin in African-American slang, in which, among other things, it can mean "excellent", "intriguing", or "superlative," having first been recorded in written English in the early 1930s. More contemporar ...

Cooling: Encyclopedia II - Cooling, Kent - Cooling Castle

Sir John de Cobham, third Baron Cobham inherited an 700 acre (2.8 km²) estate at Cobham from his father Henry in 1335, originally acquired by the de Cobhams in 1241. John Lord Cobham later built the castle in 1381, as he was in charge of the defence of Kent but a successful raid by the Spanish and French up to Gravesend spurred the king to realize the defence was needed. For in 1379 French vessels appeared in the Thames, with a body of French and Spanish soldiers who 'ravaged all this part of Kent', so that every town and village near the river fell to t ...

Cooling: Encyclopedia II - Bipropellant rocket - Cooling

The combustion process can generate temperatures as high as 3500 kelvins; above the melting point of all materials. Combustion chambers that need to survive for any length of time do so by continuously cooling the solid walls. The coolant methods include: uncooled (used for short runs mainly during testing) ablative walls (walls are lined with a material that is continuously vapourised and carried away). radiative cooling (the chamber becomes almost white hot and radiates the heat away) dump coo ...

Cooling: Encyclopedia - Evaporative cooling

Evaporative cooling is a system in which latent heat of evaporation is used to carry heat away from an object to cool it. The latent heat contains a considerable amount of energy, and carries away more heat than if the same temperature liquid was simply removed physically. The simplest example would be sweat, which the body secretes in order to cool itself. The amount of heat transfer depends on the evaporation rate, which in turn depends on the humidity of the air and its te ...

Cooling: Encyclopedia - Cooling curve

A cooling curve is a line graph that represents the change of phase of matter, typically from either a gas to a solid or a liquid to a solid. Time is used in the x-axis while temperature is used for the y-axis. They are often used in chemistry and physics, and can apply (misleadingly) to matter behaviour during heating, as well as during cooling. Cooling curve graphs are useful as they clearly show up a phenomenon of phase changes of matter. To explain this, we shall use water as our example. First we start with a sealed ...

Cooling: Encyclopedia - Cooling tower

Cooling towers are structures for cooling water or other working medium to near-ambient temperature. The primary use of cooling towers are to lower the temperature of power plant waste heat without causing heat pollution in nearby bodies of water. Though most laymen associate cooling towers with nuclear power plants, any type of steam generating power plant can utilize cooling towers. Many nuclear power plants, such as Seabrook Sta ...

Cooling: Meditation Is Cool, Enjoy Yourself

Meditation is the natural process of withdrawing attention from environmental, physical, and mental processes and consciously directing it inward to a chosen focus of attention. But not many people know how to practice meditation for personal benefit and spiritual growth.

The beneficial side-effects of regular meditation practice include stress reduction, strengthening of the body's immune system, more orderly thinking, improvement in powers of concentration, and a slowing of the biological ageing process. For these reasons, meditation practice is recommended by an increasing number of doctors as a harmless way for patient-clients to be more responsible for their own total well-being.

Cooling: Be Cool, Draw Energy From Spiritual Devotion

Have you seen how peacefully a child sleeps in the lap of his parent, even in a noisy, crowded local train? The hustle-bustle disturbs everyone, but not the child, due to his implicit faith in the protection of his parent.

All of us strive diligently to overcome our many fears: financial, familial, social, academic and physical. However, the necessary security measures like insurances, helmets, buzzer alarms and health check-ups fail to free us from a disconcerting sense of insecurity within us. Why?

All fear originates in an unbalanced, unrealistic material conception of life. The material aspect of our life has its importance; we need to feed, clothe, house and provide for ourselves and our loved ones.

Cooling: Encyclopedia - Cooling Kent

Cooling is a village and civil parish on the Hoo Peninsula, overlooking the North Kent Marshes. According to the 2001 census the parish had a population of 209. This remote and isolated hamlet has been described as 'the capital of English Lollardry' because of its association with Sir John Oldcastle. The most notable feature of the village is Cooling Castle, built on the edge of the marshes during the 12th century to defend the neighbouri ...

Cooling: Encyclopedia - Cool World

1992's Cool World marked Ralph Bakshi's return to feature films after nine years. Bakshi wrote the original screenplay, which was ordered by producer Frank Mancuso Jr. to be heavily re-written. The final version of the screenplay, written by Michael Grais and Mark Victor (and an uncredited Larry Gross) barely resembled the story that Bakshi conceived. The film was dismissed by critics, and died at the box office, but later became a cult favorite with some of Bakshi's fans. Bakshi later called it one of his worst experien ...

Cooling: Encyclopedia - Cool song

"Cool" is a pop song written by American singer-songwriter Gwen Stefani and Dallas Austin for Stefani's debut solo album Love. Angel. Music. Baby (2004). The song's musical style, and its production by Austin, were heavily inspired by pop music from the 1980s, and its lyrics chronicle a relationship in which two lovers have separated, but remain "cool" with each other and good friends. It received praise from pop-music critics, and parallels have been drawn by the media between the lyrical content of "Cool" and the real-life re ...

Cooling: Encyclopedia - Aircooling

Aircooling (also: air cooling) is one method of dissipating heat. It works by using a fan blowing air into the object one wants to cool. Usually, a heatsink is also used for greater efficiency. Its use is widespread in CPU cooling, where the computer processors produce large quantities of heat that, if not dissipated, could damage the CPU. It is said that in the future new processors would be generate too much heat to be dissipated through air, and it w ...

Cooling: Encyclopedia II - Computer cooling - Spot Cooling

Computer cooling - Passive Heatsink Cooling. This involves attaching a block of machined metal to the part that needs cooling. An adhesive may be used, or more commonly for a CPU, a clamp is used to affix the heatsink tight over the chip, with a thermally conductive pad or gel spread in-between. This block usually has fins and ridges to increase its surface area. The heat conductivity of metal is much better than that of air, and its ability to radiate heat is better than that of the component part it is protecting (usually an integrated circuit/CPU). Commonly found on older CPUs and parts that do not ...

Cooling: Encyclopedia II - Computer cooling - System Cooling

If there is more air being forced into the system than being pumped out (due to an imbalance in the number of fans), this is referred to as a 'positive' airflow, as the pressure inside the unit would be higher than outside. A balanced or neutral airflow is the most efficient, although a slightly positive airflow results in less dust build up. ...

Cooling: Encyclopedia II - Cool African philosophy - Mystical coolness and the mask of the cool

In his work African Art in Motion [4], scholar Robert Farris Thompson (1974) divides the philosophy of cool into five distinct elements: visibility, luminosity (of motion), smoothness, rebirth and reincarnation and composure of the face (the "mask of the cool"). Thompson explains the cool aesthetic in African and African American movement in African Art in Motion: The mind of an elder within the body of the young is sugge ...
