 | | | Console emulator: Encyclopedia II - Handheld game console - History
Handheld game console - Origins.
The first handheld game console to use interchangeable game cartridges was the Microvision, designed by Smith Engineering, and distributed and sold by Milton-Bradley in 1979. A small screen, a small selection of games (only thirteen) led to its demise only two years later. Today, working Microvisions are quite rare. The keypad could be easily damaged and the LCD technology of the late 1970s was poor, leading to liquid crystal leaking and darkening. | | | Console emulator: Encyclopedia II - Fan translation - OriginsReverse engineering and the rise of console emulation made fan translation possible. One of the early complete translation patches for a video game was released in 1997. The patch, produced by RPGe, was designed to translate Final Fantasy V for the Super Famicom (also known as the Super Nintendo Entertainment System) into English. While translating games had been around by the time of the patch, it was the first to prove to a large audience that the in-depth hacking required ...

 | | | Console emulator: Encyclopedia II - ROM image - Usage of ROMs
ROM image - Changing Meaning.
ROM chips, while still in use, have been replaced in many instances by optical media such as CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs, magnetic media such as hard disks and magnetic tapes and, more recently, Flash Memory chips. However, the term ROM has grown to encompass many of these newer media so, for instance, a computer game copied from a magnetic tape may also be referred to as a ROM. Images copied from optical media are also called ISO images, after the standard file system for optical media, ISO 9660.

 | | | Console emulator: Encyclopedia II - History of video games sixth generation era - Emulation and retro gamingDue to the increased usage of emulators and the increasing ease of finding ROM images of previous video game consoles, most notably the Nintendo Entertainment System, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, the Sega Master System, and the Sega Genesis, the sixth generation of consoles coincided with the rise of console emulation.
It was also a time when an increasing number of retro games were being enhanced or redistributed on newer systems. Nintendo, for example, introduced a line of "classic" NES and SNES games for their Game Boy ...

 | | | Console emulator: Encyclopedia II - ROM image - Hacks & Fan TranslationsOnce games have been made available in ROM format, it is often trivial for users to make modifications to the games. This may take the form of modifying graphics, changing the levels or even translating the game into a language in which it was not originally made available.
Hacks can often take the form of humorous modifications to games, as is the case with a hack of the NES version of Mario Brothers, entitled “Afro Mario Brothers” ...

 | | | Console emulator: Encyclopedia II - ROM image - Internet Distribution of ROMsThe trading of ROMs over the internet is extremely widespread. Many methods are used for such distribution, including:
http (normal web sites) and FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
BitTorrent
Direct Connect hubs
eMule
IRC DCC
Usenet binaries
Although the large size of newer games makes the distribution of more than one game at a time impractical, it is often the case for older games that many thousands of games may be distributed together as a collection. For example, the entire Good2600 set of 2,687 Atari 2600 games could be do ...

 | | | Console emulator: Encyclopedia II - Console emulator - Other usesOne advantage to ROM images is the potential for ROM hacking: amateur programmers and gaming enthusiasts have produced translations of foreign games, rewritten dialogue within a game, and applied fixes to bugs that were present in the original game. Software that emulates a console may be improved with additional capabilities that the original system did not have, such as anti-aliasing, audio interpolation, save states, online multiplayer options, or the incorporation of cheat cartridge functionality.
Some popular console emulators include gnuboy, VisualBoyAdvance, FCE Ultra, nester, Snes9x, ZSNES ...
