Alaya Consciousness

The fundamental consciousness of all sentient beings.

As defined by the Yogacara School, Alaya means the "storehouse", implying that this consciousness contains and preserves all past memories and potential psychic energy within its fold; it is the reservoir of all ideas, memories and desires and is also the fundamental cause of both Samsara and Nirvana.

A telephone operator in a small town would receive a daily call from a man who asked for the exact time. Finally, the operator asked him why he called every day. "Because", he said, "I am the man responsible for blowing the whistle at noon each day." "Well, that's strange", the operator replied: "Every day, exactly at noon, I set my clock by your whistle".

Individual lives cannot be compartmentalised; through our actions, we impact each other more than we realise. It follows that there is a profound relationship between the individual and the universe. So it's important for us to understand one another better. One way is to learn more about emotions, a key to understanding human behaviour and relationships.

Ending Poverty Consciousness

Definition number one of "poverty" in the American Heritage Dictionary is: "The state of being poor; lack of the means of providing material needs or comforts." It is further defined as "deficiency in amount; scantiness; unproductiveness; infertility."

By "poverty consciousness," I mean the set of attitudes and beliefs and feelings and values associated with material lack or fear of material lack. Poverty consciousness equals a belief in limitation, and almost always includes fear.

There is much confusion about this, not among Hindus but among those on the outside looking in.

Hinduism is both a monotheistic and a henotheistic religion. Hindus believe in one supreme God who created the universe and who is worshipped as Light, Love and Consciousness. Hindus were never polytheistic, but were always henotheistic. Henotheism is defined by Webster's as "the belief in or worship of one God without denying the existence of others."
