In 1996 Suharto was challenged by a split over the leadership of the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI), a legal party that propped up the regime. Megawati Sukarnoputri, the daughter of Sukarno, had become PDI's chairwoman and was increasingly critical of Suharto's regime. In response, Suharto backed a co-opted faction led by Deputy Speaker of Parliament Suryadi. The Suryadi faction announce ...

| | | | Confrontation: Encyclopedia II - History of Malaysia - Towards MalaysiaChinese reaction against the MCP was shown by the formation of the Malayan Chinese Association (MCA) in 1949 as a vehicle for moderate Chinese political opinion. Its leader, Tan Cheng Lock, favoured a policy of collaboration with UMNO to win Malayan independence on a policy of equal citizenship, but with sufficient concessions to Malay sensitivities to ease nationalist fears. Tan formed a close collaboration with Tunku (Prince) Abdul Rahman, the Chief Minister of Kedah and from 1951 successor to Datuk Onn as leader of UMNO. Since the British ...

| | | | Confrontation: Encyclopedia II - History of Malaysia - Melaka and Islamic MalayaThe port of Melaka (traditionally spelled Malacca) on the west coast of the Malay Peninsula was founded around 1400 by Parameswara, a rebel prince of the Srivijaya royal line, claimed in Sejarah Melayu to be a descendant of Alexander the Great. It rapidly assumed the place previously held by Srivijaya, establishing independent relations with China, and exploiting its position dominating the Straits to control the China-India maritime trade, which became increasingly important when the Mongol conquests closed the overland route between China and the west. Within a few years of its establishmen ...

| | | | Confrontation: Encyclopedia II - History of Malaysia - Malaya under Indian influenceThe history, as opposed to the pre-history, of the Malay-speaking world begins with the advent of Indian influence, which dates back to at least the 3rd century BC. Indian traders came to the archipelago both for its extremely abundant forest and maritime products and to trade with merchants from China, who also discovered the Malay world at an early date. Both Hinduism and Buddhism were well established in the Malay Peninsula by the beginning of the 1st century AD, and from there spread across the archipelago. Chinese chronicles of the 5th ...

| | | | Confrontation: Encyclopedia II - Bob Marley - Political and religious convictionsMarley was well known for his devotion to the Rastafari religion. It was his wife Rita who first inspired him in his faith, and he then received teachings from Mortimer Planner. He served as a de facto missionary for the faith (his actions and lyrics suggest that this was intentional) and brought it to global attention. Bob Marley has been called the Charles Wesley of the Rastafari movement for the way in which he spread the faith through his music.
Marley was known to have connections with the Twelve Tribes of Israel sect of R ...

Bob Marley - Early career.
Marley started his musical experimentation in ska and gravitated towards reggae as the music evolved, playing, teaching and singing for a long period in the 1970s and 1980s. Marley's early music career was with the ska, rocksteady and reggae group "The Wailers", which included two other celebrated reggae musicians, Bunny Livingston (Bunny Wailer) and Peter McIntosh (Peter Tosh), both who later left the group and went on to become successful solo artists. After The Wailers broke u ...

Bob Marley - Diagnosis.
In July 1977, Marley was found to have a wound on his right big toe, which he thought was from a football injury. The wound would not completely heal, and his toenail later fell off during a soccer game. It was then that the correct diagnosis was made. Marley actually had a form of skin cancer, malignant melanoma, which grew under his toenail.
Marley was advised to get his toe amputated, but he refused because of his Rastafarian beliefs that the body must be whole, that to have an a ...

| | | | Confrontation: Encyclopedia II - History of Malaysia - Problems of independenceThe Depression of the 1930s, followed by the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War, had the effect of ending Chinese emigration to Malaya, which stabilised the demographic situation and ended the prospect of the Malays becoming a minority in their own country. At the time of independence in 1957, the Malays were 55% of the population, the Chinese 35% and the Indians 10%. Since the Malays have until recently had a higher birth rate, the proportion of Malays has ...

| | | | Confrontation: Encyclopedia II - History of Malaysia - War and EmergencyThe Japanese had a racial policy just as the British did. They regarded the Malays as a colonial people liberated from British imperialist rule, and fostered a limited form of Malay nationalism, which gained them some degree of collaboration from the Malay civil service and intellectuals. (Most of the Sultans also collaborated with the Japanese, although they maintained later that they had done so unwillingly.) The occupiers regarded the Chinese, however, as enemy aliens, and treated them with great harshness: during the so-called sook ch ...

| | | | Confrontation: Encyclopedia II - History of Malaysia - The crisis of 1969The collaboration of the MCA and the MIC in these policies weakened their hold on the Chinese and Indian electorates. At the same time, the effects of the government’s affirmative action policies of the 1950s and ‘60s had been to create a discontented class of educated but underemployed Malays. This was a dangerous combination, and led to the formation of a new party, the Malaysian People’s Movement (Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia) in 1968. Gerakan was a deliberately non-communal party, bringing in Malay trade unionists and intellectuals as w ...

| | | | Confrontation: Encyclopedia II - History of Singapore - Merger with Malaysia 1963 – 1965The merger with Malaysia was thought to be the solution to resolve unemployment, a stagnating economy and the security threats posed by revolutionary elements in the period. This would be done by forming a new nation, eliminating trade taxes and therefore allowing a common, free market to open up, solving economic and unemployment woes. Thus on 16 September 1963, London agreed to hand over Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak to Kuala Lumpur, convinced that Singapore's security would be safeguarded by the much larger Malaysia. The Malaysian ruling p ...

| | | | Confrontation: Encyclopedia II - Suharto - Early life & careerSuharto was born in Kemusuk Argamulja, Yogyakarta, in central Java. He joined the Dutch colonial forces and studied in a Dutch-run military academy. During World War II, he became a battalion commander in the Japanese-sponsored local military.
After the Indonesian Declaration of Independence by Sukarno in 1945 Suharto's troops fought against Dutch and Western attempts to re-establish colonial rule during the Indonesian National Revolution. He first became widely known in the military for his surprise attack which seized Yogyakarta on ...

| | | | Confrontation: Encyclopedia II - Suharto - Indonesian Civil WarOn the morning of October 1, 1965, a group of Sukarno's closest guards kidnapped and murdered six of the right-wing anti-Communist generals. Sukarno's guards claimed that they were trying to stop a CIA-backed military coup which was planned to remove Sukarno from power on "Army Day", October 5. Suharto, at the time a Major General, joined surviving right-wing General Abdul Haris Nasution in pointing the blame for the assassinations toward Sukarno-loyalists and the Communist Party of Indonesia - a conspiracy they collectively dubbed the "30 S ...

| | | | Confrontation: Encyclopedia II - History of Singapore - The Battle of Singapore and the Japanese Occupation 1942 – 1945On December 7, 1941, Japan launched its attack on Pearl Harbor, and the Pacific War began in earnest. One of Japan's objectives was to capture Southeast Asia, because of its ample natural resources, since at the time, Malaya produced 40 percent of the world's rubber and 60 percent of its tin. Singapore, as the main Allied base in the region, was the obvious military target.
In Singapore, it was widely assumed that the Japanese attack would come from the south, by sea, since the dense Malayan jungle to the north served as a natural bar ...

| | | | Confrontation: Encyclopedia II - History of Singapore - Post-war period 1945 – 1955After Japan surrendered to the Allies on August 15, 1945, there was a state of anomie in Singapore, as the British had not arrived to take control, while the Japanese occupiers had a considerably weakened hold over the populace. Incidents of looting and revenge-killing were widespread. Much of the infrastructure had been wrecked, including the harbor facilities and electricity, water, and telephone services. It woul ...

| | | | Confrontation: Encyclopedia II - History of Singapore - Singapore as a Crown colony 1867 – 1941As Singapore continued to grow, the deficiencies in the Straits Settlements administration became increasingly apparent. Apart from the indifference of British India's administrators to local conditions, there was immense bureaucracy and red tape which made it difficult to pass new laws. Singapore's merchant community began agitating against British Indian rule, in favour of establishing Singapore as a separate colony of Britain. In 1867, the British government finally agreed to make the Straits Settlements a Crown Colony, receiving orders d ...

| | | | Confrontation: Encyclopedia II - History of Singapore - Founding of modern Singapore 1819Between the 16th and 19th centuries, the Malay archipelago was gradually taken over by the European colonial powers, beginning with the arrival of the Portuguese at Malacca in 1509. The early dominance of the Portuguese was challenged, during the 17th century, by the Dutch, who came to control most of the region's ports. The Dutch established a monopoly over trade within the archipelago, particularly in spices, then the region's most important product. Other colonial powers, including the British, were limited to a relatively minor presence. ...

| | | | Confrontation: Encyclopedia II - History of Singapore - Ancient timesThe earliest written record of Singapore was a Chinese account of the 3rd century, describing the island of "Pu Luo Chung", probably a transliteration of the Malay Pulau Ujong, "island at the end" (of the Malay peninsula.) The Sejarah Melayu (Malay Annals) contains a tale of a prince of Srivijaya, Sri Tri Buana (also known as Sang Nila Utama), who landed on the island sometime during the 13th century. Catching sight of a strange creature that he thought was a lion, he decided to found a settlement called Singapura, which means "Lion C ...

| | | | Confrontation: Encyclopedia II - History of Singapore - Early growth 1819 – 1826Raffles returned to Bencoolen soon after the signing of the treaty, leaving Major William Farquhar in charge of the new settlement, which initially consisted of some artillery and a single regiment of Indian soldiers. Establishing a trading port from scratch was in itself a daunting prospect, but Farquhar's administration was, in addition, practically unfunded, as Raffles did not wish his superiors to view Singapore as a liability. In addition, it was forbidden from earning revenue by imposing port duties, Raffles ...

| | | | Confrontation: Encyclopedia II - History of Singapore - The Straits Settlements 1826 – 1867Raffles' founding of Singapore was based on rather shaky legal grounds, and the Dutch government soon issued bitter protests to the British government, arguing that their sphere of influence had been violated. The British government and the East India Company, though originally sympathetic to these complaints, became increasingly less so as Singapore's importance grew. By 1822, it was made clear to the Dutch that the British had no intention of giving up the island.
The status of Singapore as a British possession was cemented by the A ...
