Climbing: Encyclopedia - Climb
The climb is the part of a flight of an aircraft, after take off, consisting of getting the aircraft to the desired cruising altitude. More generally, the term 'climb' means increasing the altitude. A pilot generally induces a plane to climb by setting the appropriate power level and using elevators to adjust the pitch of the plane for the appropriate speed. This technique is far more effective than trying to achieve a particular climb rate directly. All aircraft, but especially gliders can also ascend by using ri ...

The steep eastern side of the mountain offers a variety of climbing challenges. The "Mountaineer's Route", a Class 3 gully to the north of the east face, was first climbed by John Muir. The East Face route, first climbed in 1931, is a classic easy climbing route of the Sierra; mostly Class 3, with the hardest parts at only 5.4 (YDS). Other routes range up to 5.10 in difficulty. To the south of the main summit there are a series of minor summits that are completely inconspicuous from the west, but appear as a series of "needles" from th ...

Climbing: Encyclopedia II - Aneto - Climbing

The mountain's ascent is usually made from the Refuge of the Rencluse (2,140 m). From there, the itinerary traverses the longest part of the glacier that extends to the north of the peak. The summit is defended by a short rocky passage called the Bridge of Mohammed. It is a narrow ridge of large, stable blocks, with an exposed void on each side. At the summit is an impressive cross and a contrasting view, with the snow-covered Maladeta massif to the north and the somber ...

    Climbing: Encyclopedia - Climbing system

The climbing system is a general term for the techniques and equipment used by roped climbers to protect themselves against injury or death if they fall. It is the answer to the question sometimes asked by non-climbers, "How do they get the rope up there?" It is usual to work in pairs, with one climbing and the other belaying (holding the rope, ready to anchor it if the climber falls). Long climbs are divided into shorter sections called pitches. Unless the climb starts from the ground (and even then, if the belayer is significantly lighter than the climber), th ...

    Climbing: Encyclopedia - On-sight climbing

In climbing, climbing on sight means that a climber is attempting a route that they have never attempted before, nor have they seen anyone else attempt. Prior knowledge of a route, for example having watched someone do the moves, or having heard them describe the climb, is called beta. This term likely comes from showing Betamax videos of someone making a climb to potential climbers of the same route. A successful ascent with beta on the first attempt is called a beta flash. A successful attempt after f ...

    Climbing: Encyclopedia - Climbing fiber

Climbing fibers are the name given to a series of neuronal projections from the inferior olivary nucleus located in the medulla. These axons pass through the pons and enter the cerebellum where they form synapses with the deep cerebellar nuclei and Purkinje cells. Each climbing fiber will form synapses with 1-10 Purkinje cells. Early in development, Purkinje cells are innervated by multiple climbing fibers, but as the cerebellum matures, these inputs gradually become eliminated resulting in a single climbing fiber input per Pur

Hindu Quotes: Climb the Mountain of Spiritual Awareness

For aspirants who want to climb the mountain of spiritual awareness, the path is selfless work; for those who have ascended to yoga the path is stillness and peace. When a person has freed himself from attachment to the results of work, and from desires for the enjoyment of sense objects, he ascends to the unitive state.

    Climbing: Encyclopedia - Aid climbing

Aid climbing is a style of climbing in which fixed or placed protection is used to make upward progress. In the Yosemite Decimal System used in the US, it is sometimes called "6th class" climbing. The term contrasts with free climbing in which no artificial aids are used to make progress, just the climber's hands and feet. Aid climbing places less emphasis on athletic fitness and physical strength but more on technical skill. Aid climbing - Technique. In a typical ascent with aid the climber ...

    Climbing: Encyclopedia - Climbing route

A climbing route is a route by which a climber reaches the top of a mountain, rock, or ice wall. Routes can vary drastically in difficulty, and it can be difficult to change one's mind in the middle, so the choice of route is extremely important, and published climbing guidebooks include detailed maps and photographs of routes. In the earliest days of climbing, climbers just wanted to get to the top by whatever means worked, and there is little information about what they did. But during the 19th century, as the explorers of th ...

    Climbing: Encyclopedia - Climbing wall

A climbing wall is an artificially constructed wall with grips for hands and feet, used for climbing. Some are brick or wooden constructions, but on most modern walls, the material used for the wall is a thick multiplex board with holes drilled into it at regular intervals. They generally have a place to attach a belay rope, but may also be used to practice lead climbing. Each hole contains a specially formed t-nut to allow modular hand holds to be screwed on to the wall. The face of the climbing surface is covered with a varie ...

    Climbing: Encyclopedia - Climbing shoe

A climbing shoe is a piece of foot wear that is specifically designed and worn for climbing. To increase the grip of the foot on a climbing wall or rock face due to friction, the shoe is covered with a rubber layer. Usually, the shoes are only a few millimeters thick and will have a very tight fit around the feet. High performance shoes are made of a special vulcanized rubber that becomes flexible as it gets warm due to friction. This vastly increases the surface area between the shoe and the rock thus providing a better grip for the climber. Some of these shoes are asymmetrically shaped so climbers can ...

    Climbing: Encyclopedia - Climbing fern

The Climbing Ferns are an unusual group of plants (genus Lygodium) of tropical zones, with one temperate and one subtropical species. They are unique among plants in that the rachis, or midrib, of the frond is thin, flexible, and long - the frond unrolling with indeterminate growth and the rachis twining around supports, so that each frond forms a distinct vine. The fronds may be from three to ten meters long, depending on the species. The one temperate species, the American Climbing Fern, (Lygodium palmatum

    Climbing: Encyclopedia - Climbing harness

A climbing harness is a piece of equipment used in certain types of rock-climbing, abseiling or other activities requiring the use of ropes to provide access and/or safety (eg industrial rope access, working at heights, etc.). A harness is used to secure a person to a piece of rope or an anchor point of some kind. In its simplest form a harness can be fashioned from a length of rope or a nylon tape sling tied round the waist and attached to the rope, usually by means of a carabiner. More sophisticated harnesses exist in many different patterns, designed to give greater comfort and securi ...
