Most researchers consider there to be twelve definite victims of the Torso Murder, and anywhere from one to thirty possible victims. Victim number 1 was an unidentified male found in the Jackass Hill area of Kingsbury Run (near East 49th and Praha Avenue) on September 23, 1935. Cleveland obtained its name on July 22, 1796, when surveyors of the Connecticut Land Company named an area in Ohio "Cleaveland" after General Moses Cleaveland, the superintendent of the surveying party, a month after white settlers had signed a treaty with local Native Americans to acquire the land.
