Clergyman: Encyclopedia II - Messiah Handel - Composition and premiere

In the summer of 1741 Handel, at the peak of his musical powers but depressed and in debt, began setting Charles Jennens' Biblical libretto to music at his usual breakneck speed. In just 24 days, Messiah was complete. However it was not first performed until 1742, at a charity concert on Fishamble Street in Dublin's Temple Bar district on April 13 after production difficulties and last-minute rearrangements of the score. Jonathan Swift (author of "Gulliver's Travels" and a local clergyman), had put some pressure on the premiere and ha ...

Clergyman: Encyclopedia II - Leverett House - History

Leverett House was named after John Leverett, who was President of Harvard from 1708 to 1724. Leverett's election was one of the significant turning points for Harvard, for every President before him had been a clergyman. Leverett was a leader of the liberal movement in the Congregational Church and he opposed the powerful clergymen Increase and Cotton Mather, who had attempted to impose upon the College a new charter containing a loyalty oath that would have refused appointment to the faculty of anyone not willing to acknowledge the primacy ...

Clergyman: Encyclopedia II - Northampton Saints - History

The club was established in 1880 under the original title of Northampton St. James (Saints) by Rev Samuel Wathen Wigg, a local clergyman and curate of St. James. This is how the club got its two nicknames of The Saints or Jimmies. His original concept was to promote "order" to his younger parish members by creating a youth rugby club, with the philosophy of a "hooligan sport designed to turn them into gentlemen". It was not long before Northampton had one of the major Rugby Union teams in the country. Twenty years after its establishment, the first Saints player, local fa ...

Clergyman: Encyclopedia II - Armand Jean du Plessis Cardinal Richelieu - Rise to power

In 1614, the clergymen of Poitou elected Richelieu as one of their representatives to the States-General. There, he was a vigorous advocate of the Church, arguing that it should be exempt from taxes and that bishops should have more political power. He was the most prominent clergyman to support the adoption of the decrees of the Council of Trent throughout France; the Third Estate (commoners) was his chief opponent in this endeavour. At the end of the assembly, the First Estate (the clergy) chose him to deliver the address enumerating its p ...

Clergyman: Encyclopedia II - Charles Darwin - Religious views

Charles Darwin came from a Nonconformist background. Though several members of his family were Freethinkers, openly lacking conventional religious beliefs, he did not initially doubt the literal truth of the Bible. He attended a Church of England school, then at Cambridge studied Anglican theology to become a clergyman and was fully convinced by William Paley's teleological argument that design in nature proved the existence of God. However, his beliefs began to shift during his time on board HMS Beagle. He questioned what he saw—wo ...

Clergyman: Encyclopedia II - Christian and Missionary Alliance - History of the denomination

Initially, the Christian and Missionary Alliance was not founded as a denomination. Dr. Albert B. Simpson was a Presbyterian clergyman motivated by the spiritual needs of the metropolitan multitudes in North America, as well as by those of the unevangelized peoples in other lands. He was compelled by a sense of urgency to take this message to all nations because of Jesus's statement in Matthew 24:14: This gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world ...

Clergyman: Encyclopedia II - Colley Cibber - Life

Cibber was born in London, his father being Caius Gabriel Cibber, a distinguished sculptor originally from Denmark. Colley's parents wanted him to become a clergyman, but he was irresistibly attracted to the stage and in 1690 began working as an actor at the Drury Lane theatre, a more insecure and socially much inferior job. "Poor, at odds with his parents, and entering the theatrical world at a time when players were losing their power to businessmen-managers" (Biographical Dictionary of Actors), Cibber nevertheless married early in ...
