Claude Rains: Encyclopedia II - Claude Rains - Life

Rains was born in London on November 10, 1889. He fought in World War I, and was involved in a gas attack that left him almost blind in one eye for the rest of his life. Rains' acting talents were recognized by Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree, founder of The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Tree paid for the elocution lessons that he needed to succeed as an actor. Later, Rains taught at the institution, working with John Gielgud and Laurence Olivier, among others. Rains' first Hollywood role was the title character in James Whale's The Invisible Man (1933). His distinctive voice won him the role: his face was not ...

Claude Rains: Encyclopedia - Cleopatra VII of Egypt

Cleopatra VII Philopator (January 69 BC – August 12, 30 BC) was queen of ancient Egypt, the last member of the Ptolemaic dynasty and hence the last Hellenistic ruler of Egypt. Although many other Egyptian Queens shared the name, she is usually known as simply Cleopatra, and all of her similarly named predecessors have been mostly forgotten. As co-ruler of Egypt with her father (Ptolemy XII Auletes), her brother/husband Ptolemy XIV, and later her son Caesarion, Cleopatra survived a coup engineered by her brother's court ...

Claude Rains: Encyclopedia II - Character actor - Definition

Typically, character actors lack some of the stereotypical physical attributes associated with stars. A character actor may be very short or very tall, heavy or thin, balding, or simply unconventional-looking. Many older actors and actresses find their access to lead roles limited by age as well. Similarly, actors of colour were often barred from roles for which they were otherwise suited; some found work perfoming ethnic stereotypes. A character actor is usually playing a character who doesn't go through a major change in the course of the ...

Claude Rains: Encyclopedia II - James Whale - Hollywood career

Whale was best known for his work in the horror genre, making such momentous and iconic pictures as Frankenstein, where he was the first director ever to move the camera through the shot, Bride of Frankenstein, and The Invisible Man. Universal Pictures owed its stellar success in the 30s much in part to the huge box-office receipts of these three blockbusters. Further, these pictures established the screen careers of Gloria Stuart, Colin Clive, Elsa Lanchester, Boris Karloff, Una Merkel, and Claude Rains, to name just a ...

Claude Rains: Encyclopedia II - Mr. Smith Goes to Washington - Cultural Effects

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington was attacked when it was released as an anti-American pro-Communist film for its portrayal of corruption in American Government. In France it was banned by the Nazis, who feared its message. In the spring of 2005, media attention over the "nuclear option" focused extra attention on what was already the melodramatic climax of the film, when Smith launches a lengthy and defiant filibuster. ...

Claude Rains: Encyclopedia II - The Sea Hawk 1940 film - Plot

The film begins with King Philip II of Spain declaring his intentions to destroy England and after this "puny rockbound island as barren and treacherous as her Queen" is out of the way, he believes that world conquest will follow: "it (a map) will cease to be a map of the world; it will be Spain." He sends one of his courtiers, Don Alvarez, played by Claude Rains, as his ambassador to England to allay suspicions generated by the great armada he is bu ...

Claude Rains: Encyclopedia II - Casablanca film - Production

The film was based on Murray Burnett and Joan Alison's unproduced play Everybody Comes to Rick's. The story analyst at Warner Brothers who read the play called it (approvingly) "sophisticated hokum", and it was agreed to buy the rights for $20,000. The project was renamed Casablanca, apparently in imitation of the 1938 hit Algiers. Shooting began on May 25, 1942 and was completed on August 3, 1942. The entire film was shot in the studio, except for the sequence showing the arrival of Major Strasser (filmed at Van Nuys Ai ...

Claude Rains: Encyclopedia II - Stingray TV show - Story and characters

"Stand by for action! We are about to launch Stingray! Anything can happen in the next half-hour!" These words, accompanied by a montage of action scenes, get each episode off to a rousing start. In case of an attack the entire city can be lowered into the ground on hydraulic jacks. Ma ...

Claude Rains: Encyclopedia II - Laconia New Hampshire - History

A large Abenaki Indian settlement called Acquadocton Village once existed at the point now known as "The Weirs," named by colonists for fishing weirs discovered at the outlet of the Winnipesaukee River. About 1652, the Endicott surveying party visited the area, an event commem ...

Claude Rains: Encyclopedia II - Lawrence of Arabia film - Real-Life And Fictional Characters

slight spoilers The historical accuracy of the film, and particularly its portrayal of Lawrence himself, have been called to question by numerous historical scholars [1]. Most of the film's characters are either real or based on real characters, to varying degrees. The events depicted in the film are largely based on accepted historical fact and Lawrence's own writing about events, though they have various degrees of romanticization. The main problem some have with with the portrayal of Lawrence is not only the differenc ...
